theorem

aa is an effect   ⟺  σ(a)⊆[0,1]\iff \sigma(a) \subseteq [0, 1]

Let AA be a unital C∗C^*-algebra and a∈Aa \in A be an observable (a self-adjoint element). Then aa is an effect, defined as satisfying the operator inequality 0≤a≤10 \le a \le 1, if and only if the spectrum of aa, denoted σ(a)\sigma(a), is a subset of the closed interval [0,1][0, 1].

definition

Effect constructor via functional calculus: f(a)f(a) where f(σ(a))⊆[0,1]f(\sigma(a)) \subseteq [0, 1]

Let AA be an operator algebra and a∈Aa \in A be an observable (a self-adjoint element). Given a continuous function f:R→Rf: \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} and a proof that ff maps the spectrum of aa, denoted σ(a)\sigma(a), into the closed interval [0,1][0, 1], this definition constructs an effect from the element f(a)f(a) obtained via the continuous functional calculus. Specifically, the resulting element satisfies the operator inequality 0≤f(a)≤10 \le f(a) \le \mathbb{1}.

definition

Complementary effect 1−E\mathbb{1} - E

Given an effect EE in an operator algebra AA, its complement is the effect defined by 1−E\mathbb{1} - E, where 1\mathbb{1} is the identity element of the algebra. Since EE satisfies the operator inequality 0≤E≤10 \le E \le \mathbb{1}, its complement also satisfies 0≤1−E≤10 \le \mathbb{1} - E \le \mathbb{1}.

theorem

complement(complement E)=E\text{complement}(\text{complement } E) = E

For any effect EE in an operator algebra AA, the complement of the complement of EE is equal to EE. Given that the complement of an effect EE is defined as 1−E\mathbb{1} - E (where 1\mathbb{1} is the identity element of the algebra), this identity states that 1−(1−E)=E\mathbb{1} - (\mathbb{1} - E) = E.
