W⋆-algebras and normal states

i. Overview

A W⋆-algebra is a C⋆-algebra that is the dual of a Banach space, its predual. Mathlib's `WStarAlgebra` only asserts that a predual exists. The weak-⋆ topology depends on the predual, so `WStarAlgebraStructure` fixes one together with the isometric identification of `A` with its dual. The weak-⋆ topology is coarser than the norm topology. A normal state is a state that is continuous for the weak-⋆ topology.

ii. Key results

- `WStarAlgebraStructure` : a C⋆-algebra with a chosen predual. - `WStarAlgebraStructure.weakStarTopology` : the weak-⋆ topology. - `WStarAlgebraStructure.norm_le_weakStarTopology` : the weak-⋆ topology is coarser than the norm topology. - `NormalState` : a weak-⋆ continuous state.

definition

Weak-⋆\star topology on AA

For a C∗C^*-algebra AA equipped with a W∗W^*-algebra structure (providing an isometric identification of AA with the dual of a predual space A∗A_*), the weak-⋆\star topology is the topology on AA induced by its pairing with A∗A_*. It is the coarsest topology such that for every element ξ∈A∗\xi \in A_*, the linear map A→CA \to \mathbb{C} defined by a↦ξ(a)a \mapsto \xi(a) is continuous.

theorem

The weak-⋆\star topology is coarser than the norm topology

For a W∗W^*-algebra AA, the weak-⋆\star topology (the topology induced by the pairing with its predual A∗A_*) is coarser than the topology induced by the norm ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\| on AA. That is, every open set in the weak-⋆\star topology is also an open set in the norm topology.

definition

Continuous linear functional induced by a predual element ξ∈A∗\xi \in A_*

Given an element ξ\xi in the predual A∗A_* of a W∗W^*-algebra AA, this definition provides the corresponding continuous linear functional on AA. For any a∈Aa \in A, the value is given by the natural pairing ⟨a,ξ⟩\langle a, \xi \rangle, where AA is identified as the dual of its predual.

theorem

Evaluation of the W∗W^*-algebra predual pairing ⟨ξ,a⟩\langle \xi, a \rangle

Let AA be a W∗W^*-algebra and A∗A_* its predual. For any element ξ∈A∗\xi \in A_* and any element a∈Aa \in A, the value of the continuous linear functional induced by ξ\xi on AA is given by the evaluation of aa on ξ\xi via the canonical isometric identification A≅(A∗)∗A \cong (A_*)^*. That is, predualPairing(ξ)(a)=⟨a,ξ⟩\text{predualPairing}(\xi)(a) = \langle a, \xi \rangle.

theorem

∥⟨a,ξ⟩∥≤∥a∥∥ξ∥\|\langle a, \xi \rangle\| \leq \|a\| \|\xi\| for W∗W^*-algebra predual pairing

Let AA be a W∗W^*-algebra and A∗A_* its predual. For any element a∈Aa \in A and ξ∈A∗\xi \in A_*, the pairing ⟨a,ξ⟩\langle a, \xi \rangle (representing the evaluation of the linear functional ξ\xi at aa) satisfies the norm inequality: ∥⟨a,ξ⟩∥≤∥a∥⋅∥ξ∥\|\langle a, \xi \rangle\| \leq \|a\| \cdot \|\xi\| where ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\| denotes the norm in AA, its predual A∗A_*, and the complex numbers C\mathbb{C} respectively.

theorem

Predual functionals are weak-⋆\star continuous

Let AA be a W∗W^*-algebra and A∗A_* be its predual. For any element ξ∈A∗\xi \in A_*, the linear functional on AA defined by the pairing ⟨⋅,ξ⟩:A→C\langle \cdot, \xi \rangle : A \to \mathbb{C} (where ⟨a,ξ⟩\langle a, \xi \rangle is the value of the functional ξ\xi at aa) is continuous with respect to the weak-⋆\star topology on AA and the standard topology on C\mathbb{C}.

theorem

Predual elements separate the points of a W∗W^*-algebra

Let AA be a W∗W^*-algebra with predual A∗A_*. For any two elements a,b∈Aa, b \in A, if ⟨a,ξ⟩=⟨b,ξ⟩\langle a, \xi \rangle = \langle b, \xi \rangle for all ξ∈A∗\xi \in A_*, then a=ba = b. Here, ⟨a,ξ⟩\langle a, \xi \rangle denotes the natural pairing between an element of the algebra and an element of its predual.

theorem

Weak-⋆\star convergence   ⟺  \iff convergence of all predual pairings

Let AA be a W∗W^*-algebra and A∗A_* be its predual. Let f:α→Af: \alpha \to A be a function and ll be a filter on α\alpha. Then ff converges to a∈Aa \in A in the weak-⋆\star topology if and only if for every element ξ∈A∗\xi \in A_*, the complex-valued function i↦⟨f(i),ξ⟩i \mapsto \langle f(i), \xi \rangle converges to ⟨a,ξ⟩\langle a, \xi \rangle along the filter ll. Here, ⟨⋅,ξ⟩\langle \cdot, \xi \rangle denotes the continuous linear functional on AA induced by the predual element ξ\xi.

instance

Normal state as a function ω:A→C\omega : A \to \mathbb{C}

For a W∗W^*-algebra AA, this instance allows a normal state ω\omega to be treated as a function from the algebra to the complex numbers, mapping a∈Aa \in A to ω(a)∈C\omega(a) \in \mathbb{C}.

theorem

The value of ω.toState\omega.\text{toState} at aa is ω(a)\omega(a)

Let AA be a W∗W^*-algebra and ω\omega be a normal state on AA. For any element a∈Aa \in A, the value of the underlying state ω.toState\omega.\text{toState} applied to aa is equal to the value of ω\omega applied to aa, i.e., ω.toState(a)=ω(a)\omega.\text{toState}(a) = \omega(a).

theorem

Normal states are norm continuous

Let AA be a W∗W^*-algebra and let ω\omega be a normal state on AA. Then ω\omega is continuous as a mapping from AA to C\mathbb{C} with respect to the norm topology. This follows because a normal state is defined to be continuous with respect to the weak-⋆\star topology, and the weak-⋆\star topology is coarser than the norm topology.
