States and finite normalized weights

i. Overview

A state is a normalized positive linear functional, a weight is a function on the positive cone. Restricting a state to the positive cone gives a finite normalized weight, and extending a finite normalized weight linearly gives a state. These are inverse to each other.

definition

State associated with a finite normalized weight ww

Let EE be an order-unit space and ww be a weight defined on its positive cone. If ww is finite and normalized (i.e., w(1)=1w(1) = 1), this definition constructs the corresponding state φ:E→R\varphi: E \to \mathbb{R}. The state φ\varphi is the unique unital positive linear map obtained by extending ww linearly from the positive cone to the entire space EE.

definition

Weight induced by a state ss

Let EE be an order-unit space and E+E^+ be its positive cone. Given a state s:E→Rs: E \to \mathbb{R} (represented as a unital positive linear map), this definition constructs the corresponding weight w:E+→[0,∞]w: E^+ \to [0, \infty]. For any element A∈E+A \in E^+, the weight is defined by w(A)=s(A)w(A) = s(A). Since ss is a positive linear map, s(A)s(A) is guaranteed to be non-negative for all A∈E+A \in E^+.

theorem

The weight ww induced by a state ss satisfies w(A)=s(A)w(A) = s(A) for A∈E+A \in E^+

Let EE be an order-unit space and E+E^+ be its positive cone. Given a state s:E→Rs: E \to \mathbb{R} (a unital positive linear map), let ww be the weight induced by ss. For any element A∈E+A \in E^+, the value of the weight w(A)w(A) is given by s(A)s(A) converted to an extended non-negative real number (an element of [0,∞][0, \infty]).

theorem

(s.toWeightA).toReal=s(A)(s.\text{toWeight} A).\text{toReal} = s(A) for A∈E+A \in E^+

Let EE be an order-unit space and E+E^+ be its positive cone. For any state ss on EE (defined as a unital positive linear map s:E→Rs: E \to \mathbb{R}) and any element A∈E+A \in E^+, the weight induced by ss (denoted s.toWeights.\text{toWeight}) satisfies the equality (s.toWeight(A)).toReal=s(A)(s.\text{toWeight}(A)).\text{toReal} = s(A). In other words, the real-valued evaluation of the weight induced by a state agrees with the value of the state itself on the positive cone.

theorem

Weights Induced by States are Finite and Normalized

Let EE be an order-unit space and s:E→Rs: E \to \mathbb{R} be a state (a unital positive linear map). Let ws:E+→[0,∞]w_s: E^+ \to [0, \infty] be the weight induced by ss, defined by ws(A)=s(A)w_s(A) = s(A) for all AA in the positive cone E+E^+. Then wsw_s is finite and normalized.

definition

Equivalence between finite normalized weights and states

Let EE be an order-unit space. There is an equivalence (bijection) between the set of finite normalized weights on the positive cone E+E^+ and the set of states S(R,E)\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}, E) on EE. A weight w:E+→[0,∞]w: E^+ \to [0, \infty] belongs to this subtype if it satisfies the property `IsState` (i.e., it is finite and normalized such that w(1)=1w(1) = 1), while a state s∈S(R,E)s \in \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}, E) is a unital positive linear map from EE to R\mathbb{R}. This equivalence shows that restricting a state to the positive cone produces a finite normalized weight, and conversely, any such weight can be uniquely extended to a state.
