States

i. Overview

A state assigns each observable its expectation value: a positive linear functional (`0 ≤ A ⟹ 0 ≤ ω A`), normalized so the certain outcome reads `ω 1 = 1`. In quantum mechanics, `ω A = tr(ρA)` for a density matrix `ρ`.

ii. Key results

  • `𝓢[𝕜, A]` : states on an ordered `𝕜`-vector space with a distinguished unit.

definition

Positive linear functionals P[k,A]\mathcal{P}[\mathbf{k}, A] on an ordered k\mathbf{k}-vector space

Given an ordered k \mathbf{k} -vector space A A over a scalar field k \mathbf{k} , P[k,A] \mathcal{P}[\mathbf{k}, A] denotes the space of all positive linear functionals from A A to k \mathbf{k} . A linear functional ω:A→k \omega: A \to \mathbf{k} is considered positive if ω(a)≥0 \omega(a) \geq 0 for all a∈A a \in A such that a≥0 a \geq 0 .

definition

Space of states S[k,A]\mathcal{S}[\mathbb{k}, A] on an ordered vector space AA

For an ordered k\mathbb{k}-vector space AA with a distinguished unit 1A1_A, the notation S[k,A]\mathcal{S}[\mathbb{k}, A] denotes the set of states on AA. A state is defined as a positive linear functional ω:A→k\omega: A \to \mathbb{k} such that ω(a)≥0\omega(a) \geq 0 for all a≥0a \ge 0 and ω(1A)=1\omega(1_A) = 1.
