Schur's lemma for covariant channels

i. Overview

If the observables split into invariant blocks `E = ⨁ᵢ Wᵢ` on each of which every equivariant map acts as a scalar, then every equivariant map preserving the blocks is determined by one real number per block. For the qubit, the Hermitian `2 × 2` matrices split into the scalars and the Pauli vectors, so a rotation-covariant channel is determined by one number.

Mathlib's Schur lemma needs an algebraically closed field, while the observables are a real space. The Schur property of a block is therefore a hypothesis, `IsSchurBlock`.

ii. Key results

- `IsSchurBlock` : every equivariant map preserving the block acts on it as a scalar. - `exists_scalar_of_isSchurBlock` : an equivariant map is a scalar on each block. - `UnitalPositiveLinearMap.IsCovariant.exists_scalar_of_isSchurBlock` : the same for covariant channels.

definition

Schur property for a submodule WW

Let EE be a real vector space and GG be a group acting on EE via a map (g,x)↦g⋅x(g, x) \mapsto g \cdot x. A submodule W⊆EW \subseteq E is said to be a **Schur block** if every linear endomorphism f:E→Ef: E \to E that is GG-equivariant on WW (meaning f(g⋅x)=g⋅f(x)f(g \cdot x) = g \cdot f(x) for all g∈G,x∈Wg \in G, x \in W) and leaves WW invariant (f(W)⊆Wf(W) \subseteq W) acts as a scalar multiplication on WW. That is, there exists a constant c∈Rc \in \mathbb{R} such that f(x)=c⋅xf(x) = c \cdot x for all x∈Wx \in W.

theorem

Equivariant Maps act as Scalars on Schur Blocks

Let EE be a real vector space and GG be a group acting on EE via a map (g,x)↦g⋅x(g, x) \mapsto g \cdot x. Suppose EE is the internal direct sum of a family of GG-invariant submodules {Wi}i∈ι\{W_i\}_{i \in \iota} (i.e., E=⨁i∈ιWiE = \bigoplus_{i \in \iota} W_i and g⋅Wi⊆Wig \cdot W_i \subseteq W_i for all g∈Gg \in G). If each WiW_i is a **Schur block**, then for any GG-equivariant linear map f:E→Ef: E \to E that preserves each block (i.e., f(Wi)⊆Wif(W_i) \subseteq W_i), there exists a collection of scalars {ci}i∈ι\{c_i\}_{i \in \iota} in R\mathbb{R} such that for every i∈ιi \in \iota, the restriction of ff to WiW_i is multiplication by cic_i: ∀i∈ι,∀x∈Wi,f(x)=cix \forall i \in \iota, \forall x \in W_i, f(x) = c_i x

Schur's Lemma: A Covariant Channel Acts as a Scalar on Invariant Schur Blocks

Let EE be a real vector space and GG a group acting on EE through a symmetry representation ρ:G→Sym(E)\rho: G \to \text{Sym}(E). Let ϕ:E→E\phi: E \to E be a channel that is covariant with respect to ρ\rho, meaning ϕ(ρ(g)x)=ρ(g)ϕ(x)\phi(\rho(g)x) = \rho(g)\phi(x) for all g∈Gg \in G and x∈Ex \in E. Suppose EE admits a direct sum decomposition E=⨁i∈ιWiE = \bigoplus_{i \in \iota} W_i such that: 1. Each submodule WiW_i is invariant under the action of GG (i.e., ρ(g)x∈Wi\rho(g)x \in W_i for all g∈Gg \in G and x∈Wix \in W_i). 2. Each WiW_i is a **Schur block**, meaning any GG-equivariant linear map that preserves WiW_i acts as a scalar multiplication on WiW_i. 3. The channel ϕ\phi preserves each block WiW_i (i.e., ϕ(x)∈Wi\phi(x) \in W_i for all x∈Wix \in W_i). Then there exist real scalars ci∈Rc_i \in \mathbb{R} for each i∈ιi \in \iota such that for all x∈Wix \in W_i, the channel acts as ϕ(x)=cix\phi(x) = c_i x.
