The thermodynamic limit
Limits of finite-volume expectations define compatible states of the infinite system.
i. Overview
Macroscopic equilibrium is idealised as a state of the infinite system, obtained as a limit of states of larger and larger finite boxes. That such limits exist is a compactness statement: the set of states of each local system is compact, so along an ultrafilter of boxes exhausting the system the expectation values of every local observable converge. The limits are automatically compatible with enlargement of regions, because inclusions compose, so the limit is a state of the net with no further assumption.
The finite-volume states need not be equilibrium states. The theorem constructs a limit along a chosen exhausting ultrafilter; it does not assert convergence along the full family of volumes or uniqueness of the thermodynamic limit.
Properties that survive the limit are inherited by it. In particular if the finite-volume states become invariant under translations in the limit of large boxes, the limit is homogeneous. This is the standard route to translation-invariant states of the infinite system, and it applies to classical and quantum systems alike.

Expectation value of a local observable in finite volume
Given a thermodynamic family indexed by , a region , and a local observable , this function returns the expectation value of with respect to the finite-volume state if the region is contained within the finite volume (i.e., ). If is not contained in , the value is . Specifically, the value is given by when , where is the inclusion of the local observable into the algebra of the larger volume.
Expectation value for
For a thermodynamic family with states on finite volumes , let be a region and be a local observable. If is contained within the finite volume (i.e., ), then the expectation value is given by , where is the inclusion map of the local observable into the algebra of the larger volume .
is the thermodynamic limit of the family
A state of the infinite system (represented as a `NetState`) is the thermodynamic limit of a family if, for every region and every local observable , the expectation values converge to the expectation value along the filter associated with . Specifically, satisfies: where denotes the expectation of the observable in the finite volume (vanishing if is not contained in ).
Uniqueness of the Thermodynamic Limit State
Let be a thermodynamic family of states on a net of observables. If and are two states of the infinite system (net states) that both satisfy the condition of being a thermodynamic limit of , then . Specifically, if for every region and every local observable , the limit of the finite-volume expectation values along the associated ultrafilter converges to both and , then the states and are identical.
Existence of a local limit state for a thermodynamic family
Let be a thermodynamic family of states indexed by with an associated filter on . For any local region in the set of regions , there exists a state in the state space of the local algebra such that for every local observable , the finite-volume expectation values converge to along the filter . That is, where denotes the expectation value of the observable in the -th finite-volume state.
Existence of a Thermodynamic Limit State
Let be a thermodynamic family of states on a net of observables, and let be an ultrafilter on the index set . There exists a state of the infinite system (a net state) such that for every local region and every local observable , the limit of the expectation values of along the ultrafilter converges to the expectation value of in the state . That is, where represents the expectation value of in the finite-volume state indexed by (formally defined as the value of under when the region is contained in the finite volume ).
Thermodynamic limit state
Let be a thermodynamic family of states defined on a net of observables , and let be its associated ultrafilter. The thermodynamic limit state is a specific state of the infinite system (a net state) chosen such that for every local region and every local observable , the expectation value is the limit of the finite-volume expectation values along the ultrafilter : where is the expectation value of in the -th finite-volume state.
Expectation Values Converge to the Thermodynamic Limit State
Let be a thermodynamic family of states and let be its associated ultrafilter. For any local region and any local observable , the expectation values of in the finite-volume states (given by ) converge along the ultrafilter to the expectation value of in the thermodynamic limit state (denoted `F.limitState`). That is: where is the expectation value of in the -th finite-volume state if the region is contained within the volume , and otherwise.
The thermodynamic limit state is a limit of its family
Let be a thermodynamic family of states defined on a net of observables with an associated ultrafilter . Let be the thermodynamic limit state (denoted by `limitState`) of the family . Then is a limit of in the sense that for every local region and every local observable , the expectation value of in the state , denoted , is the limit of the finite-volume expectation values along the ultrafilter :
The thermodynamic limit of a family of restricted states is the original state
Let be a net of observables and be a state of the infinite system (a net state). Suppose is a thermodynamic family of states defined on regions . If for every index , the local state is equal to the restriction of the global state to the region (i.e., ), then the thermodynamic limit state of the family is equal to .
Asymptotic Invariance of Finite-Volume States Implies Invariance of the Thermodynamic Limit State
Let be a thermodynamic family of finite-volume states on a local net of observables , and let be the thermodynamic limit state associated with the ultrafilter on . Let be a symmetry action of a group on the net, where denotes the transformation mapping an observable in region to its translate in region . If for every group element , every local region , and every local observable , the expectation values satisfy the asymptotic invariance condition where is the expectation value of in the -th finite-volume state (defined as if is contained in the -th volume and otherwise), then the thermodynamic limit state is invariant under the action .
