States of an extended system

Expectation values of all local measurements, and their homogeneity under a symmetry.

i. Overview

A state assigns an expectation value to every measurement. For an infinite system the macroscopic states of interest, such as thermal equilibrium of a crystal, cannot be given by a density matrix. They are described by the expectation values of all the *local* measurements. A state of a local net is therefore a family `ω X`, one state for the observables of each region, which is compatible with enlargement: the expectation value of a measurement made in `X` does not depend on the larger region in which it is regarded as made. No global system is needed to define this.

A state is *invariant* under a symmetry when moving a measurement does not change its expectation value, `ω (g • X) ∘ τ g X = ω X`. For translations, this is homogeneity of the state. Invariance of a state is a different property from covariance of the system and from invariance of the time evolution.

ii. Key results

- `NetState` : expectation values of all local measurements, compatible with enlargement. - `NetState.mix` : statistical mixtures of states. - `NetState.act` : moving a state by a symmetry. - `NetRepresentation.stateOf` : a state of the big system gives expectation values for all local measurements. - `CovariantNetRepresentation.isInvariant_stateOf` : a homogeneous state of the big system gives a homogeneous state of the net.

theorem

Compatibility of Net State Expectation Values under Inclusion: σ.ωY(N.incl(a))=σ.ωX(a)\sigma.\omega_Y(N.incl(a)) = \sigma.\omega_X(a)

Let σ\sigma be a state of a local net NN. For any two regions XX and YY such that X≤YX \le Y, and for any observable aa in the region XX, the expectation value of aa is consistent when viewed in the larger region YY. That is, if N.inclN.incl is the inclusion map of observables from XX to YY, then the expectation value assigned by σ\sigma in region YY to the included observable N.incl(a)N.incl(a) equals the expectation value assigned by σ\sigma in region XX to aa: σ.ωY(N.incl(a))=σ.ωX(a)\sigma.\omega_Y(N.incl(a)) = \sigma.\omega_X(a) where σ.ωX\sigma.\omega_X and σ.ωY\sigma.\omega_Y are the expectation value functionals (states) associated with the respective regions.

definition

Probabilistic mixture of net states tσ+(1−t)τt\sigma + (1-t)\tau

Given a net of observables NN and two states σ,τ\sigma, \tau of this net (represented as `NetState N`), along with a probability t∈[0,1]t \in [0, 1], this function constructs a new state of the net. This new state is the convex combination tσ+(1−t)τt\sigma + (1-t)\tau. For any region XX and any local observable aa in that region, the expectation value assigned by the mixed state is calculated as tσX(a)+(1−t)τX(a)t \sigma_X(a) + (1 - t) \tau_X(a).

theorem

Expectation value of a mixed net state: (tσ+(1−t)τ)X(a)=tσX(a)+(1−t)τX(a)(t\sigma + (1-t)\tau)_X(a) = t \sigma_X(a) + (1-t) \tau_X(a)

Let NN be a net of observables. For any two states σ\sigma and τ\tau of the net, any probability t∈[0,1]t \in [0, 1], any region XX, and any local observable a∈A(X)a \in A(X), the expectation value of aa in the mixed state tσ+(1−t)τt\sigma + (1-t)\tau is the convex combination of the individual expectation values: (tσ+(1−t)τ)X(a)=t⋅σX(a)+(1−t)⋅τX(a)(t\sigma + (1-t)\tau)_X(a) = t \cdot \sigma_X(a) + (1 - t) \cdot \tau_X(a) where σX(a)\sigma_X(a) and τX(a)\tau_X(a) denote the expectation values assigned to the observable aa by states σ\sigma and τ\tau in region XX, respectively.

definition

State σ\sigma is invariant under symmetry action α\alpha

A state σ\sigma of a local net is invariant under a symmetry action α\alpha if, for every group element g∈Gg \in G and every region XX, the expectation values satisfy ωgX∘τg,X=ωX\omega_{gX} \circ \tau_{g,X} = \omega_X where ωX\omega_X denotes the expectation value functional (state) on the observables in region XX, and τg,X\tau_{g,X} is the symmetry transformation mapping observables in region XX to those in the transformed region g⋅Xg \cdot X. In other words, the expectation value of a measurement is unchanged when both the measurement and the state are moved by the symmetry.

definition

Pullback of a local state σ\sigma by a symmetry gg

Given a net state σ\sigma, a symmetry group action α\alpha of GG on a net of observables, a group element g∈Gg \in G, and a region XX, the function `pull` returns the local state on the observables A(X)A(X) obtained by pulling back the state ωg⋅X\omega_{g \cdot X} (the state assigned by σ\sigma to the region g⋅Xg \cdot X) along the symmetry transformation τg(X):A(X)→A(g⋅X)\tau_g(X) : A(X) \to A(g \cdot X).

theorem

σ\sigma is Invariant iff pull(α,g,X,σ)=ωX\text{pull}(\alpha, g, X, \sigma) = \omega_X

A state σ\sigma of a local net NN (which assigns a local state ωX\omega_X to each region XX) is invariant under a symmetry action α\alpha of a group GG if and only if, for every group element g∈Gg \in G and every region XX, the pullback of the local state ωg⋅X\omega_{g \cdot X} along the symmetry transformation τg(X)\tau_g(X) is equal to the local state ωX\omega_X. That is, IsInvariant(α,σ)  ⟺  ∀g∈G,∀X,pull(α,g,X,σ)=ωX\text{IsInvariant}(\alpha, \sigma) \iff \forall g \in G, \forall X, \text{pull}(\alpha, g, X, \sigma) = \omega_X

theorem

Consistency of local states under equality of regions X=YX = Y

Let σ\sigma be a state of a local net NN, which assigns a local state (expectation value functional) ωX\omega_X to every region XX. For any two regions XX and YY such that X=YX = Y, let eqIso(e)\text{eqIso}(e) be the canonical transport isomorphism between the observables of the two regions induced by the equality e:X=Ye: X = Y. Then, pulling back the local state ωY\omega_Y along this isomorphism yields the local state ωX\omega_X, i.e., (eqIso(e))∗ωY=ωX(\text{eqIso}(e))^* \omega_Y = \omega_X.

theorem

Pullback of a local state by the identity symmetry is the state itself

For any region XX and any state σ\sigma of a local net NN, the pullback of the local state by the identity element 11 of the symmetry group GG at region XX is equal to the local state ωX\omega_X assigned by σ\sigma to XX. That is, pull(α,1,X,σ)=ωX\text{pull}(\alpha, 1, X, \sigma) = \omega_X where α\alpha is the symmetry action of GG on the net.

theorem

pull(gh,X,σ)=(τhX)∗(pull(g,h⋅X,σ))\text{pull}(gh, X, \sigma) = (\tau_h X)^* (\text{pull}(g, h \cdot X, \sigma))

Let GG be a symmetry group acting on a local net of observables NN such that for each g∈Gg \in G and region XX, there is a symmetry transformation τg(X):A(X)→A(g⋅X)\tau_g(X) : A(X) \to A(g \cdot X). For a state σ\sigma of the net, let pull(g,X,σ)\text{pull}(g, X, \sigma) denote the pullback of the local state at region g⋅Xg \cdot X along the morphism τg(X)\tau_g(X). For any g,h∈Gg, h \in G and region XX, it holds that pull(gh,X,σ)=(τh(X))∗(pull(g,h⋅X,σ))\text{pull}(gh, X, \sigma) = (\tau_h(X))^* (\text{pull}(g, h \cdot X, \sigma)) where (τh(X))∗(\tau_h(X))^* denotes the pullback operation on the local state space.

definition

Action of a symmetry group GG on a net state σ\sigma

Given a net action α\alpha of a group GG on a net of observables NN, and an element g∈Gg \in G, the action of gg on a net state σ\sigma (denoted g⋅σg \cdot \sigma) is a new net state. For any region XX and any local observable a∈A(X)a \in A(X), the expectation value assigned by the transformed state is: (g⋅σ)X(a)=σg−1⋅X(τg−1(X)(a))(g \cdot \sigma)_X(a) = \sigma_{g^{-1} \cdot X}(\tau_{g^{-1}}(X)(a)) where τg−1(X):A(X)→A(g−1⋅X)\tau_{g^{-1}}(X) : A(X) \to A(g^{-1} \cdot X) is the symmetry transformation corresponding to g−1g^{-1} at the region XX.

theorem

(g⋅σ)X=pull(g−1,X,σ)(g \cdot \sigma)_X = \text{pull}(g^{-1}, X, \sigma)

Let α\alpha be a net action of a group GG on a net of observables NN. For any group element g∈Gg \in G, net state σ\sigma, and region XX, the local state (expectation value functional) assigned by the transformed state g⋅σg \cdot \sigma to the region XX is equal to the pullback of the state σ\sigma from the region g−1⋅Xg^{-1} \cdot X via the symmetry transformation τg−1(X)\tau_{g^{-1}}(X). This is expressed as: (g⋅σ)X=pull(g−1,X,σ)(g \cdot \sigma)_X = \text{pull}(g^{-1}, X, \sigma)

theorem

(g⋅σ)X(a)=σg−1⋅X(τg−1(X)(a))(g \cdot \sigma)_X(a) = \sigma_{g^{-1} \cdot X}(\tau_{g^{-1}}(X)(a))

Let α\alpha be a net action of a group GG on a net of observables NN. For any group element g∈Gg \in G, net state σ\sigma, region XX, and local observable aa belonging to the algebra A(X)A(X) of region XX, the expectation value of aa in the transformed state g⋅σg \cdot \sigma is given by: (g⋅σ)X(a)=σg−1⋅X(τg−1(X)(a))(g \cdot \sigma)_X(a) = \sigma_{g^{-1} \cdot X}(\tau_{g^{-1}}(X)(a)) where τg−1(X):A(X)→A(g−1⋅X)\tau_{g^{-1}}(X) : A(X) \to A(g^{-1} \cdot X) is the symmetry transformation corresponding to g−1g^{-1} acting on the region XX.

theorem

Identity action on net states: 1⋅σ=σ1 \cdot \sigma = \sigma

Given a net action α\alpha of a group GG on a net of observables NN, for any state σ\sigma of the net, the action of the identity element 1∈G1 \in G on the state σ\sigma leaves the state unchanged, i.e., 1⋅σ=σ1 \cdot \sigma = \sigma.

theorem

act(gh,σ)=act(g,act(h,σ))\text{act}(gh, \sigma) = \text{act}(g, \text{act}(h, \sigma))

Let GG be a group acting on a net of observables NN via a net action α\alpha. For any group elements g,h∈Gg, h \in G and any net state σ∈NetState(N)\sigma \in \text{NetState}(N), the action of the product g⋅hg \cdot h on the state σ\sigma is equivalent to the action of gg applied to the state resulting from the action of hh on σ\sigma: act(g⋅h,σ)=act(g,act(h,σ))\text{act}(g \cdot h, \sigma) = \text{act}(g, \text{act}(h, \sigma)) This identity confirms that the group action on the space of net states is compatible with the group's multiplication law.

abbrev

Group action of GG on NetState(N)\text{NetState}(N)

Given a net action α\alpha of a group GG on a net of observables NN, the space of net states NetState(N)\text{NetState}(N) is equipped with a group action (specifically a `MulAction`) of GG. For any group element g∈Gg \in G and net state σ\sigma, the action g⋅σg \cdot \sigma is defined by the transformation act(α,g,σ)\text{act}(\alpha, g, \sigma). This action satisfies the identity law 1⋅σ=σ1 \cdot \sigma = \sigma and the associativity law (gh)⋅σ=g⋅(h⋅σ)(gh) \cdot \sigma = g \cdot (h \cdot \sigma).

theorem

σ\sigma is invariant   ⟺  ∀g∈G,g⋅σ=σ\iff \forall g \in G, g \cdot \sigma = \sigma

Let σ\sigma be a state of a local net of observables NN and α\alpha be a symmetry action of a group GG on NN. The state σ\sigma is invariant under α\alpha if and only if for every group element g∈Gg \in G, the transformed state g⋅σg \cdot \sigma (the action of gg on the state σ\sigma) is equal to σ\sigma.

theorem

An invariant state σ\sigma satisfies g⋅σ=σg \cdot \sigma = \sigma for all g∈Gg \in G

Let σ\sigma be a state of a local net NN and let α\alpha be an action of a group GG on NN. If σ\sigma is invariant under α\alpha, then for every group element g∈Gg \in G, the transformed state under the symmetry action satisfies g⋅σ=σg \cdot \sigma = \sigma.

definition

Net state induced by a global state ω\omega

Let ρ\rho be a net representation that maps the local observables A(X)A(X) of a net NN into a global system BB. Given a global state ω\omega on BB (represented as a unital positive linear map), this definition induces a net state on NN. For each region XX, the corresponding local state is defined as the composition ω∘πX\omega \circ \pi_X, where πX:A(X)→B\pi_X: A(X) \to B is the representation map for the region XX.

theorem

Evaluation formula for the induced net state ρ.stateOf(ω)\rho.\text{stateOf}(\omega)

Let ρ\rho be a net representation that maps the local observables A(X)A(X) of a net into a global system BB. For any global state ω\omega on BB, any region XX, and any local observable a∈A(X)a \in A(X), the expectation value of aa in the induced net state (ρ.stateOf(ω))(\rho.\text{stateOf}(\omega)) at region XX is given by the application of the global state to the represented observable: (ρ.stateOf(ω))(X)(a)=ω(πX(a)) (\rho.\text{stateOf}(\omega))(X)(a) = \omega(\pi_X(a)) where πX:A(X)→B\pi_X: A(X) \to B is the representation map for the region XX.

theorem

Global Invariance of ω\omega Implies Invariance of the Induced Net State

Let ρ\rho be a covariant net representation that maps a local net NN into a global system BB, where a group GG acts on BB via symmetries βg\beta_g. If a global state ω\omega on BB is invariant under the group action, such that ω∘βg=ω\omega \circ \beta_g = \omega for all g∈Gg \in G, then the induced net state ρ.stateOf(ω)\rho.\text{stateOf}(\omega) is invariant under the symmetry action α\alpha on the net. In other words, an invariant target state induces an invariant compatible family of local states.
