The global system of local observables
Local observables form one system by identifying each observable with its image in a larger region.
i. Overview
A measurement supported in a finite region can also be viewed as a measurement in any larger region. Identifying these descriptions gives a global system of local observables. When the regions are directed and the net is faithful, this is the algebraic direct limit of the local systems. Two descriptions agree when they agree in a common larger region; positivity is inherited from the local systems.
The local systems embed as ordered subsystems. A compatible family of local states is equivalent to a state on this global system: both give the same expectation value to every local observable. This is the local-to-global connection needed for thermodynamic limits.
Every element of this construction still has support in some region. No norm completion is taken here. The construction of a completed quasi-local algebra would require further structure. Nets and compatible states can also be used without constructing this global system.

Linear inclusion for a local net
For a local net of observables indexed by a set of regions , where denotes the space of observables localized in region , given two regions such that , this definition provides the inclusion map as an -linear map.
A Local Net forms a Directed System
Let be a local net of observables indexed by a set of regions . For each region , let denote the space of observables localized in , and for any regions , let be the linear inclusion map. Then the family of spaces together with the maps forms a directed system.
Global system of local observables
Given a faithful local net over a directed set of regions , where each region is associated with a space of local observables , the **global system** is defined as the algebraic direct limit of these local systems, denoted by . This limit is taken with respect to the family of linear inclusion maps for all in . This construction represents the observables of the entire infinite system by identifying local observables that are images of one another under inclusion into larger regions.
The Global System is an Additive Commutative Group
The global system of local observables, constructed as the algebraic direct limit of the local observable spaces in a local net , carries the structure of an additive commutative group. This means that for any observables in the global system, addition is well-defined, commutative, and associative, with a zero element and additive inverses.
is a module over
The global system of local observables, defined as the algebraic direct limit of the local spaces for a faithful local net , carries the structure of a module over the real numbers . This means that scalar multiplication of an observable by a real number is well-defined and satisfies the standard axioms of a real vector space.
Canonical injection of local observables
Given a faithful local net over a directed set of regions , let be the -vector space of observables localized in a region . The map is the canonical -linear map that embeds the local observables from region into the global system, defined as the algebraic direct limit of the local systems.
Let be a faithful local net over a directed set of regions , where denotes the space of local observables for each region . Let be the inclusion map for , and let be the canonical injection into the global system (the algebraic direct limit of the local spaces). For any regions with and any local observable , the following identity holds:
Every Global Observable has a Local Representative
Given a faithful local net over a nonempty directed set of regions , where each region is associated with a space of local observables , let the global system be the algebraic direct limit . For any global observable in this global system, there exists a region and a local observable such that is the image of under the canonical injection .
Any two global observables share a common localizing region
For any two observables and in the global system constructed from a faithful local net over a non-empty directed set of regions , there exists a common region and local observables such that and are the images of and under the canonical injection .
Injectivity of the Local-to-Global Map
Let be a faithful local net over a directed set of regions , where is the space of local observables associated with region . Let the global system be the algebraic direct limit of these local spaces. For any region , the canonical linear map , which identifies local observables with their representatives in the global system, is injective.
Equality of local observables in the Global System via eventual agreement in a common region
In a faithful local net over a directed set of regions , let be the space of local observables for each region . Let be the canonical linear map that embeds local observables into the global system (the algebraic direct limit ). For any local observables and , their images in the global system are equal, , if and only if there exists a common larger region (with and ) such that their inclusions into are identical: where and are the inclusion maps defined by the local net.
Non-negative global observables
Given a faithful local net over a directed set of regions , where each region is associated with a space of local observables , the set of **non-negative global observables** in the global system is defined as the set of all elements that are images of non-negative local observables. Specifically, an element belongs to this set if there exists a region and a local observable such that and , where is the canonical injection into the direct limit.
The canonical injection preserves non-negativity of local observables:
Given a faithful local net over a directed set of regions , for any region and any local observable , if is non-negative (), then its image under the canonical injection into the global system, , belongs to the set of non-negative global observables .
The zero observable is non-negative ()
In the global system of local observables associated with a faithful local net , the zero observable is non-negative, i.e., .
The set of non-negative global observables is closed under addition ()
Let be the global system of local observables associated with a faithful local net over a directed set of regions . Let be the set of non-negative global observables, defined as the set of elements such that is the image of some non-negative local observable under the canonical injection. For any two global observables and , if and , then their sum is also in .
Scalar multiplication by preserves positivity in the global system
In the global system of local observables (the algebraic direct limit of local systems in a faithful local net ), let denote the set of non-negative global observables. For any non-negative real number and any global observable , the scalar multiple is also an element of .
Partial Order on the Global System
The global system of local observables is equipped with a partial order relation . For any two global observables , the relation holds if and only if , where is the cone of non-negative global observables consisting of elements that are images of non-negative local observables for some region .
in the Global System
In the global system of local observables associated with a faithful local net , the partial order relation between two observables and is characterized such that if and only if their difference is a non-negative global observable, i.e., .
if and only if in the Global System
In the global system of local observables , an element is non-negative (denoted ) if and only if , where is the set of global observables that are images of non-negative local observables from the underlying local net.
The Global System is an Ordered Additive Monoid
The global system of local observables is an ordered additive monoid. This means that the addition operation is compatible with the partial order relation : for any global observables , if , then .
Scalar multiplication by is monotonic on the global system
In the global system of local observables associated with a faithful local net , scalar multiplication by non-negative real numbers is monotonic. That is, for any real number such that and any global observables , if , then .
The Global System is an ordered vector space over
The global system of local observables , constructed as the algebraic direct limit of the local spaces for a faithful local net , is an ordered vector space over the real numbers . This means that the space is a real vector space equipped with a partial order such that for any elements and any scalar with , the relation implies and .
Unit element of the global system
The global system of local observables, defined as the algebraic direct limit , is a unital space. Its unit element is defined as the image of the identity element from any local region under the canonical injection . Because the inclusion maps in the local net preserve the unit, this definition is consistent across all regions.
For any region in the set of regions , let be the space of local observables and be the global system of observables. The canonical injection map maps the identity element to the identity element of the global system:
The Global System is an Order Unit Space
The global system of local observables is an order unit space. This means that the global system is an ordered vector space where the identity element satisfies two conditions: 1. The identity element is non-negative: . 2. The identity element is an order unit: for every element in the global system , there exists a natural number such that . These properties are inherited from the local order unit spaces via the direct limit construction, as every global observable is the image of some local observable which itself satisfies the order unit property.
Canonical channel
Given a faithful local net over a directed set of regions , let be the space of local observables for a region and be the global system. The map is the canonical channel (a unital positive linear map) that embeds the local observables of region into the global system. This map is constructed from the canonical linear injection by providing proofs that it is both positive (preserving the order) and unital (mapping the identity of to the identity of the global system).
Given a faithful local net over a directed set of regions , let be the space of local observables for a region and be the global system. For any region and any local observable , the value of the canonical channel applied to is equal to the value of the canonical linear map applied to , that is, .
The Canonical Channel is an Order Embedding
Consider a faithful local net over a directed set of regions , where each region is associated with a space of local observables . Let be the global system of local observables. For any region , the canonical channel is an order embedding. That is, for any local observables , the relation holds in the global system if and only if holds in the local system .
Canonical representation of a local net in its global system
Given a faithful local net over a directed set of regions , where each region is associated with a space of local observables , let be the global system. The **canonical representation** of the net in its global system is the net representation whose components are the canonical inclusion channels. For any two regions with a local inclusion , this representation satisfies .
The Canonical Representation in the Global System is Faithful
Let be a faithful local net over a directed set of regions , where each region is associated with a space of local observables . The canonical representation of in its global system is faithful. This means that for every region , the canonical inclusion map is an order embedding: for any local observables , if and only if in the global system.
Linear functional induced by a net state
Given a state of a local net (defined as a compatible family of local linear functionals for each region ), this definition provides the unique induced linear functional on the global system of local observables. For any local observable viewed as an element of the global system, its value under this functional is given by the local expectation value .
for the Global System
Let be a faithful local net of observable spaces over a directed set of regions . Let be a state of the local net (a compatible family of local linear functionals ), and let be the linear functional induced by on the global system. For any region and any local observable , the value of applied to the image of under the canonical injection is equal to the local expectation value:
State of the global system induced by a net state
Given a faithful local net and a net state (defined as a compatible family of local states ), this definition constructs the corresponding state on the global system . The resulting state is a unital positive linear map such that for any local observable represented as an element of the global system, the expectation value is . This construction uses the induced linear functional and formally proves that it preserves non-negativity and maps the global identity element to .
for the global system state induced by a net state
Let be a faithful local net of observable spaces over a directed set of regions . Let be a net state, which is a compatible family of local states , and let be the state on the global system induced by . For any region and any local observable , the value of the global state applied to the image of under the canonical injection is equal to the local expectation value :
Equivalence between global states and compatible families of local states
Let be a faithful local net of observables over a directed set of regions , where each region is associated with a space of local observables . Let the global system be the algebraic direct limit . There is a natural bijection (equivalence) between: 1. **Global states**: The set of states , defined as unital positive linear maps from the global system to . 2. **Net states**: The set of compatible families of local states , where each is a local state and for any , the condition holds. The bijection maps a global state to the family of local states defined by its restriction to each region, , where is the canonical inclusion. Conversely, any compatible family of local states uniquely extends to a state on the global system by the universal property of the direct limit.
