Lüders operations

i. Overview

An effect `e` of an ordered JB-algebra has a positive square root. The Lüders operation of `e` is the quadratic representation `x ↦ U_{√e} x`, and conditioning a state on `e` is `x ↦ ω(U_{√e} x) / ω(e)`. For a projection this is conditioning on the projection.

definition

Positive square root e\sqrt{e} of an effect ee

For an effect ee in an ordered Jordan-Banach algebra EE (where ee belongs to the order interval [0,1][0, 1]), this function returns its unique positive square root e\sqrt{e} as determined by the continuous functional calculus for JB-algebras.

definition

Lüders map UeU_{\sqrt{e}} of an effect ee

For an effect ee (an element in the order interval [0,1][0, 1]) in a normed Jordan algebra EE, the Lüders map is the positive linear map from EE to itself defined by the quadratic representation of the positive square root of ee, denoted by x↦Ue(x)x \mapsto U_{\sqrt{e}}(x). In the case of a special Jordan algebra, this operation is given by x↦exex \mapsto \sqrt{e}x\sqrt{e}.

theorem

Application of the Lüders map luedersMap(e)(x)=Ue(x)\text{luedersMap}(e)(x) = U_{\sqrt{e}}(x)

Let EE be a normed Jordan algebra. For any effect e∈[0,1]e \in [0, 1] and any element x∈Ex \in E, the Lüders map of ee applied to xx is equal to the quadratic representation of the positive square root of ee applied to xx: luedersMap(e)(x)=Ue(x) \text{luedersMap}(e)(x) = U_{\sqrt{e}}(x) where e\sqrt{e} is the positive square root of ee and UaU_a is the quadratic representation 2La2−La22L_a^2 - L_{a^2}.

theorem

Ue(1)=eU_{\sqrt{e}}(1) = e

Let EE be a normed Jordan algebra with order unit 11. For any effect e∈Ee \in E (where 0≤e≤10 \le e \le 1), the Lüders map UeU_{\sqrt{e}} applied to the unit element 11 results in the effect ee. That is, Ue(1)=eU_{\sqrt{e}}(1) = e.

definition

Lüders operation of an effect ee

For an effect ee in a normed Jordan algebra EE (where 0≤e≤10 \le e \le 1), the **Lüders operation** is the operation Φ:E→E\Phi: E \to E defined by the mapping x↦Ue(x)x \mapsto U_{\sqrt{e}}(x), where UeU_{\sqrt{e}} is the quadratic representation of the positive square root of ee. This operation is a positive linear map such that the image of the identity element is the effect itself (Φ(1)=e\Phi(1) = e), which satisfies the requirement Φ(1)≤1\Phi(1) \le 1. It represents the intrinsic Jordan algebra analogue of a single-Kraus measurement operation.

theorem

luedersOperation(e)(x)=Ue(x)\text{luedersOperation}(e)(x) = U_{\sqrt{e}}(x)

Let EE be a normed Jordan algebra and e∈Ee \in E be an effect (meaning 0≤e≤10 \le e \le 1). For any element x∈Ex \in E, the Lüders operation of ee applied to xx is equal to the Lüders map UeU_{\sqrt{e}} applied to xx.

theorem

The outcome effect of the Lüders operation of ee is ee

For any effect ee (an element satisfying 0≤e≤10 \le e \le 1) in a normed Jordan algebra EE, the outcome effect of the Lüders operation associated with ee is equal to ee. Specifically, if Φe\Phi_e is the Lüders operation x↦Ue(x)x \mapsto U_{\sqrt{e}}(x), then the outcome effect Φe(1)\Phi_e(1) is equal to ee.

theorem

The square root of a Jordan projection pp is pp (p=p\sqrt{p} = p)

Let EE be a normed Jordan algebra and let p∈Ep \in E be a Jordan projection, which means it satisfies the idempotency condition p∘p=pp \circ p = p. Then the positive square root of pp viewed as an effect, denoted p\sqrt{p}, is equal to pp itself.

theorem

The Lüders map of a projection pp is UpU_p

Let EE be a normed Jordan algebra. For any Jordan projection p∈Ep \in E (an element satisfying p∘p=pp \circ p = p), the Lüders map of pp is equal to the quadratic representation UpU_p.

definition

Lüders conditioned state of ω\omega on an effect ee with ω(e)>0\omega(e) > 0

Let EE be a normed Jordan algebra. Given a state ω∈S(R,E)\omega \in \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}, E) and an effect e∈Ee \in E (where 0≤e≤10 \le e \le 1) such that the probability of the outcome ee is non-zero (i.e., ω(e)>0\omega(e) > 0), the **Lüders conditioning** of ω\omega on ee is the post-measurement state ω′\omega' defined for any x∈Ex \in E as: ω′(x)=ω(Ue(x))ω(e)\omega'(x) = \frac{\omega(U_{\sqrt{e}}(x))}{\omega(e)} where UeU_{\sqrt{e}} is the quadratic representation of the positive square root of the effect ee. This construction represents the updated state of a system after a measurement of the effect ee has been performed and observed.

theorem

Formula for the Lüders conditioned state ω′(x)=ω(Uex)ω(e)\omega'(x) = \frac{\omega(U_{\sqrt{e}}x)}{\omega(e)}

Let EE be a normed Jordan algebra. Given a state ω∈S(R,E)\omega \in \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}, E) and an effect e∈Ee \in E (where 0≤e≤10 \le e \le 1) such that ω(e)>0\omega(e) > 0, the Lüders conditioned state ω′\omega' applied to an element x∈Ex \in E is given by the formula: ω′(x)=ω(Ue(x))ω(e)\omega'(x) = \frac{\omega(U_{\sqrt{e}}(x))}{\omega(e)} where e\sqrt{e} is the positive square root of the effect ee and UeU_{\sqrt{e}} is the quadratic representation of e\sqrt{e}.

theorem

The Lüders conditioned state maps the identity to 1

Let EE be a normed Jordan algebra. For any state ω∈S(R,E)\omega \in \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}, E) and any effect e∈Ee \in E such that the probability of the outcome ee is positive (ω(e)>0\omega(e) > 0), the Lüders conditioned state ω′\omega' satisfies ω′(1)=1\omega'(1) = 1, where 11 is the identity element of the algebra.

theorem

Lüders Conditioning Preserves State Normality

Let EE be a real normed Jordan algebra. Let ω∈S(R,E)\omega \in \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}, E) be a normal state and e∈Ee \in E be an effect (an element satisfying 0≤e≤10 \le e \le 1) such that the probability of the outcome ee is strictly positive (ω(e)>0\omega(e) > 0). If the Lüders operation Φe:E→E\Phi_e: E \to E defined by x↦Ue(x)x \mapsto U_{\sqrt{e}}(x) is normal (meaning it preserves the suprema of directed sets), then the Lüders conditioned state ω′\omega', defined for any x∈Ex \in E as ω′(x)=ω(Ue(x))ω(e),\omega'(x) = \frac{\omega(U_{\sqrt{e}}(x))}{\omega(e)}, is also a normal state.

theorem

Lüders conditioning on a projection equals conditioning on the projection as an effect

Let EE be a normed Jordan algebra, p∈Ep \in E be a Jordan projection (satisfying p∘p=pp \circ p = p), and ω\omega be a state on EE. If the probability of pp in state ω\omega is positive (i.e., ω(p)>0\omega(p) > 0), then the Lüders conditioned state of ω\omega on pp (viewed as an effect) is equal to the state ω\omega conditioned on the projection pp. Specifically, for any x∈Ex \in E, the identity ω(Upx)ω(p)=ω(Upx)ω(p)\frac{\omega(U_{\sqrt{p}} x)}{\omega(p)} = \frac{\omega(U_p x)}{\omega(p)} holds, where UU denotes the quadratic representation.
