Compatible observables

i. Overview

Two observables of a Jordan algebra are compatible when their multiplication operators commute, `L_a L_b = L_b L_a`. This needs no commutator, which the Jordan structure does not have. Commuting observables of a C⋆-algebra are compatible.

ii. Key results

  • `JordanAlgebra.IsJordanCompatible` : compatible observables.
  • `JordanAlgebra.isJordanCompatible_comm` : compatibility is symmetric.
  • `JordanAlgebra.isJordanCompatible_one_left` : the unit is compatible with everything.

definition

Jordan-compatibility of aa and bb

Let EE be a Jordan algebra. Two elements a,b∈Ea, b \in E are Jordan-compatible if their corresponding left multiplication operators LaL_a and LbL_b commute, such that La∘Lb=Lb∘LaL_a \circ L_b = L_b \circ L_a, where Lx(y)=x⋅yL_x(y) = x \cdot y. This serves as the generalization of commutativity for non-associative Jordan structures.

theorem

aa is Jordan-compatible with itself

Let EE be a Jordan algebra. For any element a∈Ea \in E, aa is Jordan-compatible with itself.

theorem

Jordan-compatibility is symmetric

Let EE be a Jordan algebra. For any elements a,b∈Ea, b \in E, if aa and bb are Jordan-compatible, then bb and aa are also Jordan-compatible. (Recall that aa and bb are Jordan-compatible if their left multiplication operators LaL_a and LbL_b commute, i.e., La∘Lb=Lb∘LaL_a \circ L_b = L_b \circ L_a).

theorem

L1=idEL_1 = \text{id}_E

In a Jordan algebra EE with unit element 11, the left multiplication operator L1L_1 (defined such that L1(x)=1⋅xL_1(x) = 1 \cdot x for all x∈Ex \in E) is equal to the identity linear map idE\text{id}_E.

theorem

The unit element 11 is Jordan-compatible with every element aa

In a Jordan algebra EE with unit 11, for any element a∈Ea \in E, the unit element 11 is Jordan-compatible with aa. This means that the left multiplication operator L1L_1 (where L1(x)=1⋅xL_1(x) = 1 \cdot x) commutes with the left multiplication operator LaL_a (where La(x)=a⋅xL_a(x) = a \cdot x), such that L1∘La=La∘L1L_1 \circ L_a = L_a \circ L_1. Since L1L_1 is the identity map on EE, this condition is satisfied for all aa.

theorem

Every element aa is Jordan-compatible with the unit 11

In a Jordan algebra EE with unit element 11, every element a∈Ea \in E is Jordan-compatible with 11. Specifically, the left multiplication operator LaL_a and the left multiplication operator L1L_1 commute, such that La∘L1=L1∘LaL_a \circ L_1 = L_1 \circ L_a.
