Continuous functional calculus of self-adjoint elements

i. Overview

The continuous functional calculus of a self-adjoint element of a C⋆-algebra, with values in the self-adjoint elements. It is multiplicative, monotone, positive on nonnegative functions, and isometric.

ii. Key results

  • `JB.jordanCfc` : the functional calculus with values in the observables.
  • `JB.jordanCfc_mul` : it is multiplicative.
  • `JB.norm_jordanCfc` : it is isometric.

definition

Jordan continuous functional calculus f↦f(a)f \mapsto f(a) for self-adjoint aa

For a self-adjoint element aa in a C∗C^*-algebra AA, the function `jordanCfc a` is the R\mathbb{R}-linear map from the space of continuous real-valued functions on the spectrum of aa, denoted C(σ(a),R)C(\sigma(a), \mathbb{R}), to the space of self-adjoint elements (observables) of AA. This map assigns to each continuous function f∈C(σ(a),R)f \in C(\sigma(a), \mathbb{R}) the element f(a)f(a) as defined by the continuous functional calculus.

theorem

jordanCfc(a)(id)=a\text{jordanCfc}(a)(\text{id}) = a

For a self-adjoint element aa in a C∗C^*-algebra AA, let id\text{id} denote the identity function x↦xx \mapsto x restricted to the spectrum σ(a)⊆R\sigma(a) \subseteq \mathbb{R}. The Jordan continuous functional calculus maps this identity function to the original element aa, such that jordanCfc(a)(id)=a\text{jordanCfc}(a)(\text{id}) = a.

theorem

The Jordan continuous functional calculus is isometric: ∥f(a)∥=∥f∥\|f(a)\| = \|f\|

Let AA be a C∗C^*-algebra and a∈Aa \in A be a self-adjoint element. For any continuous real-valued function ff defined on the spectrum σ(a)\sigma(a) of aa, the norm of the element f(a)f(a) (the image of ff under the Jordan continuous functional calculus) is equal to the supremum norm of ff: ∥f(a)∥=∥f∥\|f(a)\| = \|f\|

theorem

The Jordan continuous functional calculus is multiplicative: (fg)(a)=f(a)∗g(a)(fg)(a) = f(a) * g(a)

Let AA be a C∗C^*-algebra and a∈Aa \in A be a self-adjoint element. Let σ(a)⊆R\sigma(a) \subseteq \mathbb{R} denote the spectrum of aa. For any two continuous real-valued functions f,g∈C(σ(a),R)f, g \in C(\sigma(a), \mathbb{R}), the Jordan continuous functional calculus satisfies: (fg)(a)=f(a)∗g(a)(fg)(a) = f(a) * g(a) where f(a)f(a) denotes the image of ff under the functional calculus, and ∗* denotes the Jordan product (anticommutator) on the self-adjoint elements of AA, defined by x∗y=xy+yxx * y = xy + yx.

theorem

f(a)f(a) commutes with aa for self-adjoint elements

Let AA be a C∗C^*-algebra and aa be a self-adjoint element of AA. For any continuous real-valued function f∈C(σ(a),R)f \in C(\sigma(a), \mathbb{R}) defined on the spectrum of aa, the element f(a)f(a) (obtained via the Jordan continuous functional calculus) commutes with aa in the algebra AA.

theorem

f≥0  ⟹  f(a)≥0f \ge 0 \implies f(a) \ge 0 for the Jordan continuous functional calculus

Let aa be a self-adjoint element of a C∗C^*-algebra AA, and let σ(a)\sigma(a) denote its spectrum. For any continuous real-valued function f∈C(σ(a),R)f \in C(\sigma(a), \mathbb{R}), if f≥0f \ge 0 (meaning f(x)≥0f(x) \ge 0 for all x∈σ(a)x \in \sigma(a)), then the element f(a)f(a) obtained via the Jordan continuous functional calculus is non-negative (f(a)≥0f(a) \ge 0).

theorem

The Jordan continuous functional calculus f↦f(a)f \mapsto f(a) is monotone

Let aa be a self-adjoint element of a C∗C^*-algebra AA. The Jordan continuous functional calculus map f↦f(a)f \mapsto f(a), which sends a continuous real-valued function f∈C(σ(a),R)f \in C(\sigma(a), \mathbb{R}) to a self-adjoint element in AA, is monotone. That is, for any f,g∈C(σ(a),R)f, g \in C(\sigma(a), \mathbb{R}), if f≤gf \leq g pointwise on the spectrum σ(a)\sigma(a), then f(a)≤g(a)f(a) \leq g(a) in the standard ordering of self-adjoint elements.
