The unitary group preserves the domain of its generator

i. Overview

A strongly continuous unitary group preserves the domain of its candidate generator `T` and commutes with it there. So the orbit of a vector in the domain is differentiable at every time `s`, with derivative `i T (U s ψ)`.

ii. Key results

  • `stoneCandidateDomain_translate` : the group preserves the domain.
  • `stoneCandidateGenerator_translate` : the generator commutes with the group.
  • `stoneCandidateGenerator_hasDerivAt` : orbits of domain vectors are differentiable at every time.

theorem

Commutativity of Unitary Group Operators U(t)U(s)=U(s)U(t)U(t)U(s) = U(s)U(t)

Let HH be a Hilbert space and UU be a one-parameter unitary group. For any vector ψ∈H\psi \in H and any t∈Rt \in \mathbb{R}, the function s↦U(t)(U(s)ψ)s \mapsto U(t)(U(s)\psi) is equal to the function s↦U(s)(U(t)ψ)s \mapsto U(s)(U(t)\psi). This expresses the fact that the operators U(t)U(t) and U(s)U(s) commute for all t,s∈Rt, s \in \mathbb{R}.

theorem

U(t)U(t) translates the differentiability and derivative of an orbit at s=0s=0

Let HH be a Hilbert space and UU be a strongly continuous unitary group. For any vectors ψ,φ∈H\psi, \varphi \in H and any time t∈Rt \in \mathbb{R}, if the orbit s↦U(s)ψs \mapsto U(s)\psi is differentiable at s=0s=0 with derivative φ\varphi, then the orbit of the translated vector U(t)ψU(t)\psi, given by s↦U(s)(U(t)ψ)s \mapsto U(s)(U(t)\psi), is also differentiable at s=0s=0 with derivative U(t)φU(t)\varphi.

theorem

The Unitary Group U(t)U(t) Preserves the Domain of its Generator

Let HH be a Hilbert space and U:R→B(H)U: \mathbb{R} \to \mathcal{B}(H) be a strongly continuous one-parameter unitary group. For any vector ψ∈H\psi \in H, if the orbit s↦U(s)ψs \mapsto U(s)\psi is differentiable at s=0s = 0, then for any t∈Rt \in \mathbb{R}, the orbit of the translated vector U(t)ψU(t)\psi, given by s↦U(s)(U(t)ψ)s \mapsto U(s)(U(t)\psi), is also differentiable at s=0s = 0. This implies that the domain of the candidate generator of the unitary group is invariant under the action of the group U(t)U(t).

theorem

The Candidate Domain is Invariant under the Unitary Group U(t)U(t)

Let HH be a Hilbert space and U:R→B(H)U: \mathbb{R} \to \mathcal{B}(H) be a strongly continuous one-parameter unitary group. Let D\mathcal{D} be the candidate domain of the generator of UU, defined as the C\mathbb{C}-submodule of HH consisting of vectors ψ\psi such that the orbit s↦U(s)ψs \mapsto U(s)\psi is differentiable at s=0s = 0. For any vector ψ∈D\psi \in \mathcal{D} and any t∈Rt \in \mathbb{R}, the translated vector U(t)ψU(t)\psi is also an element of D\mathcal{D}.

theorem

The Candidate Stone Generator TT Commutes with the Unitary Group U(t)U(t)

Let HH be a Hilbert space and U:R→B(H)U: \mathbb{R} \to \mathcal{B}(H) be a strongly continuous one-parameter unitary group. Let TT be the candidate Stone generator with domain D⊆H\mathcal{D} \subseteq H (consisting of vectors ψ\psi where the orbit t↦U(t)ψt \mapsto U(t)\psi is differentiable at t=0t=0). For any vector ψ∈D\psi \in \mathcal{D} and any t∈Rt \in \mathbb{R}, the vector U(t)ψU(t)\psi is also in D\mathcal{D}, and the generator TT commutes with the group action such that T(U(t)ψ)=U(t)(Tψ)T(U(t)\psi) = U(t)(T\psi).

theorem

The orbit U(r)ψU(r)\psi is differentiable at ss with derivative iU(s)Tψi U(s) T\psi

Let HH be a Hilbert space and U:R→B(H)U: \mathbb{R} \to \mathcal{B}(H) be a strongly continuous one-parameter unitary group. Let D(T)D(T) be the candidate domain of the generator, consisting of vectors ψ∈H\psi \in H such that the orbit t↦U(t)ψt \mapsto U(t)\psi is differentiable at t=0t = 0, and let TT be the candidate Stone generator. For any vector ψ∈D(T)\psi \in D(T) and any time s∈Rs \in \mathbb{R}, the orbit map r↦U(r)ψr \mapsto U(r)\psi is differentiable at r=sr = s with derivative iU(s)Tψi U(s) T\psi, where ii is the imaginary unit.
