Automorphisms of the bounded operators

i. Overview

Every `⋆`-automorphism of the bounded operators on a Hilbert space is conjugation `A ↦ U A U⋆` by a unitary, and two unitaries give the same automorphism exactly when they differ by a phase. So the automorphism group is the projective unitary group.

A norm-continuous unitary one-parameter group `U` acts by `αₜ(a) = U(t) a U(t)⋆`. This flow is the unique solution of the Heisenberg equation `d/dt αₜ(a) = ⁅αₜ(a), i G⁆` with `α₀ = id`, where `G` is the generator of `U` and the bracket is the ring commutator.

ii. Key results

- `conjStarAlgAut_surjective` : every `⋆`-automorphism is unitary conjugation. - `conjStarAlgAut_eq_iff` : two unitaries give the same automorphism iff they differ by a phase. - `projectiveUnitaryEquivStarAlgAut` : the automorphism group is the projective unitary group. - `UnitaryOneParameterGroup.toAutomorphism_unique` : the conjugation flow is the unique solution of the Heisenberg equation.

theorem

Every ⋆\star-Automorphism of B(H)\mathcal{B}(H) is a Unitary Conjugation

Let HH be a complex Hilbert space and let B(H)\mathcal{B}(H) (denoted as H→L[C]HH \to L[\mathbb{C}] H) be the algebra of bounded linear operators on HH. The map that sends a unitary operator U∈B(H)U \in \mathcal{B}(H) to the ⋆\star-automorphism defined by unitary conjugation A↦UAU∗A \mapsto U A U^* is surjective. In other words, every ⋆\star-automorphism of B(H)\mathcal{B}(H) is implemented by a unitary conjugation.

theorem

Conjugation by unitaries uu and vv are equal iff u=cvu = cv for a scalar phase cc

Let HH be a complex Hilbert space and let B(H)B(H) (denoted as `H →L[ℂ] H`) be the algebra of bounded linear operators on HH. For any two unitary operators u,v∈B(H)u, v \in B(H), the ⋆\star-automorphisms of B(H)B(H) induced by conjugation (where uu acts as a↦uau∗a \mapsto u a u^*) are equal if and only if there exists a scalar phase c∈Cc \in \mathbb{C} (where ∣c∣=1|c| = 1) such that u=cvu = cv.

definition

Projective unitary group PU(H)PU(H)

Given a complex Hilbert space HH, the projective unitary group PU(H)PU(H) is defined as the quotient of the group of unitary operators U(H)U(H) on HH by the subgroup of scalar phases, which are operators of the form cIc I for c∈Cc \in \mathbb{C} with ∣c∣=1|c| = 1. This group is isomorphic to the group of ⋆\star-automorphisms of the algebra of bounded linear operators B(H)\mathcal{B}(H).

instance

Group structure of the projective unitary group PU(H)PU(H)

For a complex Hilbert space HH, the projective unitary group PU(H)PU(H) is equipped with a group structure. This group is formed by the quotient of the group of unitary operators U(H)U(H) on HH by its center, which consists of scalar phases {cI∣c∈C,∣c∣=1}\{c I \mid c \in \mathbb{C}, |c| = 1\}.

definition

Group isomorphism PU(H)≅Aut⋆(B(H))PU(H) \cong \text{Aut}_{\star}(\mathcal{B}(H))

Let HH be a complex Hilbert space, and let B(H)\mathcal{B}(H) (denoted as H→L[C]HH \to L[\mathbb{C}] H) be the algebra of bounded linear operators on HH. There exists a group isomorphism between the projective unitary group PU(H)PU(H) and the group of ⋆\star-algebra automorphisms of B(H)\mathcal{B}(H). This isomorphism maps a projective unitary [U]∈PU(H)[U] \in PU(H) to the automorphism defined by the conjugation map A↦UAU∗A \mapsto U A U^* for A∈B(H)A \in \mathcal{B}(H).

theorem

A function with zero derivative everywhere is constant

Let HH be a complex Hilbert space and let B(H)\mathcal{B}(H) denote the space of bounded linear operators on HH. Let f:R→B(H)f : \mathbb{R} \to \mathcal{B}(H) be a function. If for every s∈Rs \in \mathbb{R}, the derivative of ff at ss is the zero operator, then f(t)=f(0)f(t) = f(0) for all t∈Rt \in \mathbb{R}.

theorem

The conjugated path U(t)∗αt(a)U(t)U(t)^* \alpha_t(a) U(t) has zero derivative along solutions of the Heisenberg equation

Let HH be a complex Hilbert space and B(H)\mathcal{B}(H) be the algebra of bounded linear operators on HH. Let U:R→B(H)U: \mathbb{R} \to \mathcal{B}(H) be a norm-continuous unitary one-parameter group with generator GG. Suppose α:R→(B(H)→B(H))\alpha: \mathbb{R} \to (\mathcal{B}(H) \to \mathcal{B}(H)) is a flow such that for a fixed operator a∈B(H)a \in \mathcal{B}(H), the path t↦αt(a)t \mapsto \alpha_t(a) satisfies the Heisenberg equation: ddtαt(a)=[αt(a),iG]\frac{d}{dt} \alpha_t(a) = [\alpha_t(a), iG] where [⋅,⋅][\cdot, \cdot] denotes the commutator. Then for any s∈Rs \in \mathbb{R}, the derivative of the conjugated path r↦U(r)∗αr(a)U(r)r \mapsto U(r)^* \alpha_r(a) U(r) at r=sr = s is zero: ddr(U(r)∗αr(a)U(r))∣r=s=0\frac{d}{dr} \left( U(r)^* \alpha_r(a) U(r) \right) \bigg|_{r=s} = 0
