Composite systems

i. Overview

Two systems with observables `E` and `F` are combined into a composite system whose observables are the tensor products `E ⊗ F`. Which composite observables are nonnegative is not fixed by the parts; there are two extreme choices.

The minimal cone contains only the sums of products `x ⊗ y` of nonnegative observables: nonnegative local observations. The maximal cone contains every composite observable that no pair of local preparations `φ ⊗ ψ` can assign a negative value. A composite of `E` and `F` is any choice of nonnegative composite observables in between. Tensor products of positive maps preserve both extreme cones.

A system is nuclear when, for every other system, the maximal cone lies in the closure of the minimal cone: its composites are unique.

Given two physical systems with observable spaces EE and FF, the space of observables for the composite system is defined as the tensor product E⊗RFE \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} F.

abbrev

Tensor product of observables x⊗yx \otimes y

For two physical systems with observable spaces EE and FF, this function maps an observable x∈Ex \in E and an observable y∈Fy \in F to their tensor product x⊗yx \otimes y in the composite observable space E⊗RFE \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} F.

definition

Right slice map E⊗F→EE \otimes F \to E defined by a positive functional ψ\psi on FF

For a positive linear functional ψ:F→R\psi : F \to \mathbb{R}, the right slice map is the linear map E⊗F→EE \otimes F \to E obtained by applying ψ\psi to the second factor of the tensor product and identifying E⊗RE \otimes \mathbb{R} with EE. For an elementary tensor x⊗y∈E⊗Fx \otimes y \in E \otimes F, the map is defined by rslice(ψ)(x⊗y)=ψ(y)⋅x\text{rslice}(\psi)(x \otimes y) = \psi(y) \cdot x.

The product functional ϕ⊗ψ\phi \otimes \psi equals the pairing with the dual tensor product of functionals.

Let EE and FF be ordered real vector spaces representing physical systems. Given two positive linear functionals ϕ:E→R\phi: E \to \mathbb{R} and ψ:F→R\psi: F \to \mathbb{R}, let ϕ⊗ψ\phi \otimes \psi denote their product functional on the composite system E⊗RFE \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} F. An Archimedean cone containing the minimal tensor cone contains its closure

Let EE and FF be observable spaces and let E⊗RFE \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} F be their algebraic tensor product. Let C⊆E⊗RFC \subseteq E \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} F be a pointed cone that is Archimedean, meaning that for any z∈E⊗RFz \in E \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} F, if z+ϵ(1E⊗1F)∈Cz + \epsilon (1_E \otimes 1_F) \in C for all ϵ>0\epsilon > 0, then z∈Cz \in C. If CC contains the minimal tensor cone of E⊗RFE \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} F, then it also contains the Archimedean closure of the minimal tensor cone.

theorem

An Archimedean composite cone contains the Archimedean closure of the minimal tensor cone

Let EE and FF be observable spaces and E⊗RFE \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} F be their algebraic tensor product. If a composite cone C⊆E⊗RFC \subseteq E \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} F is Archimedean, then it contains the Archimedean closure of the minimal tensor cone. That is, minTensorClosure(E,F)⊆C. \text{minTensorClosure}(E, F) \subseteq C. A composite cone CC is said to be Archimedean if for every composite observable z∈E⊗RFz \in E \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} F, the condition that z+ϵ(1E⊗1F)∈Cz + \epsilon (1_E \otimes 1_F) \in C for all ϵ>0\epsilon > 0 implies that z∈Cz \in C, where 1E1_E and 1F1_F are the identity elements of the respective systems.

definition

System EE is nuclear

A system EE is said to be **nuclear** if for every Archimedean system FF, the maximal tensor cone is contained within the Archimedean closure of the minimal tensor cone. That is, for any Archimedean system FF, we have the inclusion: maxTensorCone(E,F)⊆minTensorClosure(E,F). \text{maxTensorCone}(E, F) \subseteq \text{minTensorClosure}(E, F). This condition ensures that the choice of a composite cone between the minimal and maximal cones is unique up to Archimedean closure.

theorem

z∈maxTensorCone  ⟺  ∀ψ≥0,rslice(ψ)(z)≥0z \in \text{maxTensorCone} \iff \forall \psi \ge 0, \text{rslice}(\psi)(z) \ge 0

Let EE be an Archimedean ordered real vector space and FF be an ordered real vector space. An element zz in the tensor product E⊗RFE \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} F belongs to the maximal tensor cone if and only if for every positive linear functional ψ:F→R\psi : F \to \mathbb{R}, the right slice rslice(ψ)(z)\text{rslice}(\psi)(z) is a non-negative element of EE. Here, the right slice rslice(ψ)\text{rslice}(\psi) is the linear map E⊗F→EE \otimes F \to E defined on elementary tensors by rslice(ψ)(x⊗y)=ψ(y)⋅x\text{rslice}(\psi)(x \otimes y) = \psi(y) \cdot x.
