Classical systems: unique decomposition into pure states

i. Overview

A system is classical when every state is a mixture of pure states in exactly one way. A die is the basic example. Its pure states are the six outcomes. Every state is a probability vector, and the state fixes the probabilities.

Geometrically, the states of a die form a simplex: the convex hull of six affinely independent points. The weights of a state are its barycentric coordinates. In infinite dimensions there can be infinitely many pure states, and the weights become a probability measure on the pure states. We call this measure a pure decomposition. The state space is a simplex when every state has exactly one pure decomposition. It is a Bauer simplex when moreover the pure states form a closed set.

A qubit is not classical. The maximally mixed state is an equal mixture of spin up and spin down, but also of spin left and spin right.

On a simplex, measures on the pure states are the same as positive functionals on the observables, and this identification respects the order.

definition

State ω\omega has a pure decomposition

Let EE be an Archimedean order-unit space and ω∈S(E)\omega \in \mathcal{S}(E) be a state, which is a unital positive linear map from EE to R\mathbb{R}. The state ω\omega has a pure decomposition if there exists a regular probability measure μ\mu on the set of pure states of EE such that ω\omega is represented by μ\mu. Specifically, for every element f∈Ef \in E, the value of the functional is given by the integral: ω(f)=∫PureState Eϕ(f) dμ(ϕ)\omega(f) = \int_{\text{PureState } E} \phi(f) \, d\mu(\phi) where the integration is performed over the set of pure states ϕ\phi.

definition

State ω\omega has a unique pure decomposition

Let EE be an Archimedean order-unit space and let ω∈S(R,E)\omega \in \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}, E) be a state (a unital positive linear map from EE to R\mathbb{R}). The state ω\omega has a unique pure decomposition if there exists exactly one regular probability measure μ\mu supported on the set of pure states of EE that represents ω\omega. In this context, a measure μ\mu represents ω\omega if for every observable f∈Ef \in E, the value ω(f)\omega(f) is given by the integral of the evaluation maps ϕ↦ϕ(f)\phi \mapsto \phi(f) over the pure states ϕ\phi with respect to μ\mu.

definition

The state space S(E)\mathcal{S}(E) is a simplex

For an Archimedean order-unit space EE, the property `IsSimplexStateSpace` states that the state space S(E)\mathcal{S}(E) is a simplex. This means that every state ω∈S(E)\omega \in \mathcal{S}(E) can be uniquely represented as a mixture of pure states, specifically by a unique regular probability measure on the set of pure states. In finite dimensions, this corresponds to the state space being the convex hull of affinely independent pure states, where every state has unique barycentric coordinates.

definition

The state space S(E)\mathcal{S}(E) is a Bauer simplex

For an Archimedean order-unit space EE, the property `IsBauerSimplexStateSpace` states that the state space S(E)\mathcal{S}(E) is a Bauer simplex. This means that: 1. S(E)\mathcal{S}(E) is a simplex, where every state ω∈S(E)\omega \in \mathcal{S}(E) is uniquely represented by a regular probability measure on the set of pure states. 2. The set of pure states {ω∈S(E)∣ω is pure}\{\omega \in \mathcal{S}(E) \mid \omega \text{ is pure}\} is a closed set in the weak-* topology.

theorem

Observables are integrable with respect to finite measures on pure states

Let EE be an Archimedean order-unit space. For any finite measure μ\mu on the space of pure states PureState(E)\text{PureState}(E) and any element f∈Ef \in E, the function that maps each pure state ω\omega to its value ω(f)\omega(f) is integrable with respect to μ\mu.

definition

Positive functional from a measure on pure states

Given a finite measure μ\mu on the set of pure states PureState(E)\text{PureState}(E) of an Archimedean order-unit space EE, this function defines a positive linear functional L:E→RL: E \to \mathbb{R} by integrating an observable f∈Ef \in E against the measure μ\mu: L(f)=∫PureState(E)ω(f) dμ(ω)L(f) = \int_{\text{PureState}(E)} \omega(f) \, d\mu(\omega) where each ω∈PureState(E)\omega \in \text{PureState}(E) is treated as a state (a normalized positive linear functional) acting on the element ff.

theorem

Evaluation of the Positive Functional LμL_\mu as an Integral: Lμ(f)=∫ω(f) dμL_\mu(f) = \int \omega(f) \, d\mu

Let EE be an Archimedean order-unit space. For any finite measure μ\mu on the set of pure states PureState(E)\text{PureState}(E) and any observable f∈Ef \in E, the value of the positive linear functional LμL_\mu (constructed from μ\mu via `toPositive`) applied to ff is equal to the integral of the evaluations ω(f)\omega(f) over the pure states with respect to the measure μ\mu: Lμ(f)=∫PureState(E)ω(f) dμ(ω) L_\mu(f) = \int_{\text{PureState}(E)} \omega(f) \, d\mu(\omega) where each pure state ω\omega is treated as a normalized positive linear functional acting on ff.

theorem

toPositive(μ+ν)=toPositiveμ+toPositiveν\text{toPositive}(\mu + \nu) = \text{toPositive} \mu + \text{toPositive} \nu

Let EE be an Archimedean order-unit space and let PureState(E)\text{PureState}(E) denote its set of pure states. For any finite measures μ\mu and ν\nu on PureState(E)\text{PureState}(E), the mapping toPositive\text{toPositive} that associates a measure with a positive linear functional is additive: toPositive(μ+ν)=toPositive(μ)+toPositive(ν)\text{toPositive}(\mu + \nu) = \text{toPositive}(\mu) + \text{toPositive}(\nu) Here, toPositive(μ)\text{toPositive}(\mu) is the positive linear functional L:E→RL: E \to \mathbb{R} defined by the integral L(f)=∫PureState(E)ω(f) dμ(ω)L(f) = \int_{\text{PureState}(E)} \omega(f) \, d\mu(\omega) for f∈Ef \in E.

theorem

μ≤ν  ⟹  Lμ≤Lν\mu \le \nu \implies L_\mu \le L_\nu for measures on pure states

Let EE be an Archimedean order-unit space. Suppose μ\mu and ν\nu are finite measures on the set of pure states PureState(E)\text{PureState}(E). If μ≤ν\mu \le \nu (meaning μ(A)≤ν(A)\mu(A) \le \nu(A) for all measurable sets AA), then the corresponding positive linear functionals LμL_\mu and LνL_\nu satisfy Lμ≤LνL_\mu \le L_\nu. The positive linear functional Lμ:E→RL_\mu: E \to \mathbb{R} associated with a measure μ\mu is defined by: Lμ(f)=∫PureState(E)ω(f) dμ(ω)L_\mu(f) = \int_{\text{PureState}(E)} \omega(f) \, d\mu(\omega) where ω(f)\omega(f) denotes the evaluation of the state ω\omega at the observable f∈Ef \in E. The inequality Lμ≤LνL_\mu \le L_\nu means that Lμ(f)≤Lν(f)L_\mu(f) \le L_\nu(f) for all f∈Ef \in E such that f≥0f \ge 0.

theorem

The induced functional LμL_\mu at the order unit equals the total mass of μ\mu

Let EE be an Archimedean order-unit space with order unit 1\mathbf{1}. For any finite measure μ\mu on the set of pure states PureState(E)\text{PureState}(E), let Lμ:E→RL_\mu: E \to \mathbb{R} be the positive linear functional defined by Lμ(f)=∫PureState(E)ω(f) dμ(ω)L_\mu(f) = \int_{\text{PureState}(E)} \omega(f) \, d\mu(\omega). Then the value of the functional evaluated at the order unit 1\mathbf{1} is equal to the total mass of the measure μ\mu on the set of pure states: Lμ(1)=μ(PureState(E))L_\mu(\mathbf{1}) = \mu(\text{PureState}(E))

theorem

Lμ=LνL_\mu = L_\nu implies equality of total mass for measures on pure states

Let EE be an Archimedean order-unit space. Let μ\mu and ν\nu be finite measures on the set of pure states PureState(E)\text{PureState}(E). Let LμL_\mu and LνL_\nu be the positive linear functionals associated with these measures, defined by Lμ(f)=∫PureState(E)ω(f) dμ(ω)L_\mu(f) = \int_{\text{PureState}(E)} \omega(f) \, d\mu(\omega) and Lν(f)=∫PureState(E)ω(f) dν(ω)L_\nu(f) = \int_{\text{PureState}(E)} \omega(f) \, d\nu(\omega) for any f∈Ef \in E. If these associated functionals are equal (Lμ=LνL_\mu = L_\nu), then the total mass of the measures is equal: μ(PureState(E))=ν(PureState(E))\mu(\text{PureState}(E)) = \nu(\text{PureState}(E)).

theorem

Lμ=Lν  ⟹  Lcμ=LcνL_\mu = L_\nu \implies L_{c\mu} = L_{c\nu} for measures on pure states

Let EE be an Archimedean order-unit space and PureState(E)\text{PureState}(E) be the set of its pure states. Given two finite measures μ\mu and ν\nu on PureState(E)\text{PureState}(E), let LμL_\mu and LνL_\nu be the positive linear functionals defined by integration: Lμ(f)=∫PureState(E)ω(f) dμ(ω)L_\mu(f) = \int_{\text{PureState}(E)} \omega(f) \, d\mu(\omega) If Lμ=LνL_\mu = L_\nu, then for any scalar c∈[0,∞]c \in [0, \infty] such that the scaled measures cμc\mu and cνc\nu are finite, it holds that Lcμ=LcνL_{c\mu} = L_{c\nu}.

theorem

Representation of Positive Functionals as Measures on Pure States

Let EE be an Archimedean order-unit space whose state space is a simplex. For every positive linear functional α:E→R\alpha : E \to \mathbb{R}, there exists a finite regular measure μ\mu on the set of pure states PureState(E)\text{PureState}(E) such that α\alpha is the functional obtained by integrating over the pure states. That is, for all f∈Ef \in E: α(f)=∫PureState(E)ω(f) dμ(ω)\alpha(f) = \int_{\text{PureState}(E)} \omega(f) \, d\mu(\omega) where ω∈PureState(E)\omega \in \text{PureState}(E) are the pure states of the system.

theorem

Lμ≤Lθ  ⟹  μ≤θL_\mu \le L_\theta \implies \mu \le \theta for measures on pure states

Let EE be an Archimedean order-unit space whose state space is a simplex. Let μ\mu and θ\theta be regular finite measures on the set of pure states PureState(E)\text{PureState}(E). Define the positive linear functionals Lμ,Lθ:E→RL_\mu, L_\theta: E \to \mathbb{R} by integrating observables against these measures: Lμ(f)=∫PureState(E)ω(f) dμ(ω)andLθ(f)=∫PureState(E)ω(f) dθ(ω)L_\mu(f) = \int_{\text{PureState}(E)} \omega(f) \, d\mu(\omega) \quad \text{and} \quad L_\theta(f) = \int_{\text{PureState}(E)} \omega(f) \, d\theta(\omega) If Lμ≤LθL_\mu \le L_\theta (meaning Lμ(f)≤Lθ(f)L_\mu(f) \le L_\theta(f) for all f∈Ef \in E such that f≥0f \ge 0), then μ≤θ\mu \le \theta as measures.
