Classical systems are nuclear
i. Overview
A classical system composes uniquely with every other system: every composite observable in the maximal cone is, up to an arbitrarily small multiple of the unit, a sum of products of nonnegative observables. Together with the converse, a system is classical exactly when it is nuclear. This is the theorem of Namioka and Phelps.
The proof measures and prepares. In the bidual of a classical system, finitely many observables are close to step functions on a partition of the unit. Each piece of the partition is detected by a state of the system. Measuring with these states and preparing the pieces approximates the observables, and applied to a composite observable in the maximal cone it produces nonnegative products. A positive functional on the minimal cone therefore cannot separate a maximal-cone observable from the minimal cone.

Existence of states detecting pieces of a partition of the unit in the bidual space

Linearity of state evaluation for linear combinations in the bidual:
Let be a physical system and denote its bidual. For a collection of observables and real coefficients , let be a linear combination (referred to as a step function in this context). For any state of the system, the evaluation of this sum at is equal to the linear combination of the individual evaluations: where the pairing represents the action of the bidual element on the state.
For any finite family of elements in the bidual space and any positive linear functional on , the evaluation of the sum at is equal to the sum of the individual evaluations:
The value is bounded by the local levels at a state detecting the piece
Let be an order-unit space and its bidual. Let be a partition of the unit and let be an observable in the bidual. Suppose is bounded between two step functions such that for some real coefficients that are all bounded in absolute value by (i.e., and for all ). If is a normalized state () that detects the -th piece of the partition with error (meaning ), then the evaluation of at the state is bounded by:
Existence of a Uniform Bound for Finitely Many Values and their Shifts
For any finite collection of real numbers (where and ) and any real constant , there exists a non-negative real number such that for all indices and , the absolute values of both and the shifted values are bounded by , i.e., and .
Existence of a small error parameter such that
For any positive real number and any non-negative real number , there exists a positive real number such that . This serves as a detection error parameter in approximation arguments.
Existence of a Measure-and-Prepare Approximation in the Bidual of a Classical System

Functionals Nonnegative on the Minimal Tensor Cone are Nonnegative on the Maximal Tensor Cone for Classical Systems

If is an element of the maximal tensor cone of , then it holds that .
Classicality of implies is Nuclear (Namioka–Phelps Theorem)
If the positive functionals on a physical system form a lattice (i.e., is a classical system), then is nuclear. This means that for any Archimedean system , the composition of and is unique in the sense that every composite observable in the maximal tensor cone lies in the closure of the minimal tensor cone.
Namioka–Phelps Theorem: is Classical is Nuclear
An Archimedean order-unit space is classical—meaning its state space is a Choquet simplex and its positive functionals form a lattice—if and only if it is nuclear, meaning that for any other Archimedean system, the minimal and maximal tensor cones coincide (it composes uniquely).
