Channels

i. Overview

A channel is a transformation of a system, described by what it does to observables: it sends observables of the output system to observables of the input system, keeps nonnegative observables nonnegative, and keeps the certain outcome certain. This covers time evolution, noise, and measurements. Quantum channels additionally stay positive on composite systems; they are `QuantumChannel`.

ii. Key results

- `UnitalPositiveLinearMap` : a positive linear map preserving `1`, notated `E →ₚ₁[R] F`. - `Channel E F` : a channel between order-unit spaces, a unital positive map `E →ₚ₁[ℝ] F`. - `UnitalPositiveLinearMap.ofLinearMap` : bundle a linear map after checking positivity and unitality.

Notation for unital positive linear maps E→p1[R]FE \to_{p1}[R] F

The notation E→p1[R]FE \to_{p1}[R] F represents the type of **unital positive linear maps** from EE to FF over a ring RR. These are linear maps that are both: 1. **Unital**: They map the identity element of EE to the identity element of FF. 2. **Positive**: They map non-negative elements in EE to non-negative elements in FF.

instance

Unital positive linear maps act as functions

A unital positive linear map ff from an order-unit space EE to FF (denoted E→p1[R]FE \to_{p1}[R] F) can be treated as a function, allowing it to be applied to an element x∈Ex \in E to produce a value f(x)∈Ff(x) \in F.

instance

Unital positive linear maps are linear maps

Let RR be a ring and E,FE, F be modules over RR. Any unital positive linear map ff from EE to FF (denoted E→p1[R]FE \to_{p1}[R] F) is a linear map. That is, the type of unital positive linear maps satisfies the requirements of the `LinearMapClass`, ensuring that these maps preserve addition and scalar multiplication.

instance

Unital Positive Linear Maps are Order Homomorphisms

Let EE and FF be order-unit spaces. Every unital positive linear map f:E→Ff: E \to F (denoted E→p1[R]FE \to_{p1}[R] F) is an order homomorphism; that is, if x≤yx \le y in EE, then f(x)≤f(y)f(x) \le f(y) in FF.

instance

Unital Positive Linear Maps Preserve 11

Every unital positive linear map ff from an order-unit space EE to FF (denoted E→p1[R]FE \to_{p1}[R] F) preserves the identity element, such that f(1)=1f(1) = 1.

theorem

Extensionality of unital positive linear maps

Let EE and FF be order-unit spaces over a semiring RR. If two unital positive linear maps f,g:E→Ff, g: E \to F satisfy f(x)=g(x)f(x) = g(x) for all x∈Ex \in E, then f=gf = g.

theorem

Unital positive linear maps are determined by their underlying linear map

The assignment of a unital positive linear map f:E→p1[R]Ff : E \to_{p1}[R] F to its underlying linear map is injective. This implies that if two unital positive linear maps have the same underlying linear transformation, they are equal as bundled objects.

definition

Unital positive linear map from linear map ff with f≥0f \ge 0 and f(1)=1f(1) = 1

Let RR be a semiring, and let EE and FF be RR-modules equipped with a partial order and a unit element 11. Given a linear map f:E→Ff: E \to F, a proof hposh_{\text{pos}} that f(x)≥0f(x) \ge 0 for all x≥0x \ge 0, and a proof honeh_{\text{one}} that f(1)=1f(1) = 1, this definition bundles ff into a unital positive linear map from EE to FF.

definition

Identity unital positive linear map

Let RR be a semiring and EE be an ordered module over RR equipped with a unit element 11. The identity unital positive linear map id:E→E\text{id} : E \to E is the linear map that sends every element x∈Ex \in E to itself, while preserving the unit element and the nonnegativity of observables.

theorem

id(x)=x\text{id}(x) = x for Unital Positive Linear Maps

Let RR be a semiring and E1E_1 be a module over RR equipped with a partial order and a unit element 11. For any element x∈E1x \in E_1, the identity unital positive linear map id:E1→E1\text{id} : E_1 \to E_1 satisfies id(x)=x\text{id}(x) = x.

definition

Composition g∘fg \circ f of unital positive linear maps

Let RR be a semiring and let EE, FF, and GG be modules over RR equipped with a partial order and a unit element 11. Given two unital positive linear maps f:E→Ff: E \to F and g:F→Gg: F \to G, their composition g∘fg \circ f is the unital positive linear map from EE to GG obtained by composing the underlying linear maps.

theorem

(g∘f)(a)=g(f(a))(g \circ f)(a) = g(f(a)) for Unital Positive Linear Maps

Let RR be a semiring and let E1E_1, E2E_2, and E3E_3 be modules over RR that are equipped with a partial order and a unit element 11. For any unital positive linear maps g:E2→E3g: E_2 \to E_3 and f:E1→E2f: E_1 \to E_2, and for any element a∈E1a \in E_1, the application of the composed map g∘fg \circ f to aa is equal to g(f(a))g(f(a)).

theorem

f∘idE=ff \circ \text{id}_E = f for unital positive linear maps

Let RR be a semiring, and let EE and FF be modules over RR equipped with a partial order and a unit element 11. For any unital positive linear map f:E→Ff: E \to F, the composition of ff with the identity unital positive linear map on EE (denoted idE\text{id}_E) is equal to ff, i.e., f∘idE=ff \circ \text{id}_E = f.

theorem

id∘f=f\text{id} \circ f = f for unital positive linear maps

Let RR be a semiring, and let EE and FF be modules over RR equipped with a partial order and a unit element 11. For any unital positive linear map f:E→Ff : E \to F, the composition of the identity map on FF, denoted as idF\text{id}_F, with ff is equal to ff. That is, idF∘f=f\text{id}_F \circ f = f.

theorem

Associativity of Composition for Unital Positive Linear Maps

Let RR be a semiring and let E,F,G,E, F, G, and HH be modules over RR, each equipped with a partial order and a unit element 11. Given three unital positive linear maps f:E→Ff: E \to F, g:F→Gg: F \to G, and h:G→Hh: G \to H, the composition of these maps is associative: h∘(g∘f)=(h∘g)∘fh \circ (g \circ f) = (h \circ g) \circ f

instance

Monoid of unital positive linear endomorphisms E→p1[R]EE \to_{p1}[R] E

Let RR be a semiring and EE be a module over RR equipped with a partial order and a unit element 11. The set of unital positive linear maps from EE to itself (endomorphisms) forms a monoid, where the binary operation is given by the composition of maps g∘fg \circ f and the identity element is the identity unital positive linear map idE\text{id}_E.

abbrev

Quantum channel between C∗C^*-algebras A1A_1 and A2A_2

For two C∗C^*-algebras A1A_1 and A2A_2 equipped with a unit and a star-ordered ring structure, a quantum channel is a unital completely positive (UCP) map from A1A_1 to A2A_2. Such a map f:A1→A2f: A_1 \to A_2 is linear, preserves the identity (f(1A1)=1A2f(1_{A_1}) = 1_{A_2}), and is completely positive, meaning it remains positive under matrix amplification.
