Quantum channels

i. Overview

A quantum channel between C⋆-algebras is a unital completely positive map: it stays positive when applied to one half of any larger, possibly entangled, system. Complete positivity is Mathlib's `CompletelyPositiveMap`. On self-adjoint parts every quantum channel is a channel between the order-unit spaces of observables.

ii. Key definitions

  • `QuantumChannel A₁ A₂` : unital completely positive maps from `A₁` to `A₂`.
  • `QuantumChannel.toChannel` : the channel it induces between the self-adjoint parts.

Quantum channels as functions

The type of quantum channels between C∗C^*-algebras A1A_1 and A2A_2 is equipped with a structure that allows its elements to be treated as functions. Specifically, for any quantum channel Φ∈QuantumChannel(A1,A2)\Phi \in \text{QuantumChannel}(A_1, A_2), this instance defines the application of Φ\Phi to an element x∈A1x \in A_1 (denoted Φ(x)∈A2\Phi(x) \in A_2) and ensures that the channel is uniquely determined by its values on all elements of A1A_1.

Quantum channels are C\mathbb{C}-linear maps

Every quantum channel Φ\Phi between C∗C^*-algebras A1A_1 and A2A_2 is a linear map over the complex numbers C\mathbb{C}. Specifically, for any elements x,y∈A1x, y \in A_1 and any scalars a,b∈Ca, b \in \mathbb{C}, the channel satisfies the property Φ(ax+by)=aΦ(x)+bΦ(y)\Phi(ax + by) = a\Phi(x) + b\Phi(y).

instance

Quantum Channels are Completely Positive Maps

Let A1A_1 and A2A_2 be C∗C^*-algebras. Any quantum channel Φ∈QuantumChannel(A1,A2)\Phi \in \text{QuantumChannel}(A_1, A_2) is a completely positive map. This implies that for any n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N}, the induced map Φ⊗idn:A1⊗Mn(C)→A2⊗Mn(C)\Phi \otimes \text{id}_n : A_1 \otimes M_n(\mathbb{C}) \to A_2 \otimes M_n(\mathbb{C}) is a positive map, preserving the cone of positive operators when applied to a subsystem of an entangled state.

instance

Quantum Channels are Unital (Φ(1)=1\Phi(1) = 1)

Let A1A_1 and A2A_2 be C∗C^*-algebras. Every quantum channel Φ\Phi from A1A_1 to A2A_2 preserves the identity element, meaning Φ(1A1)=1A2\Phi(1_{A_1}) = 1_{A_2}.

theorem

(∀x,f(x)=g(x))  ⟹  f=g(\forall x, f(x) = g(x)) \implies f = g for quantum channels

Let A1A_1 and A2A_2 be C∗C^*-algebras. For any two quantum channels f,g∈QuantumChannel(A1,A2)f, g \in \text{QuantumChannel}(A_1, A_2), if f(x)=g(x)f(x) = g(x) for all x∈A1x \in A_1, then f=gf = g.

definition

Induced channel on self-adjoint parts f∣saf|_{sa}

Given a quantum channel f:A1→A2f: A_1 \to A_2 between unital C∗C^*-algebras, this definition constructs the induced map f∣sa:selfAdjoint A1→selfAdjoint A2f|_{sa}: \text{selfAdjoint } A_1 \to \text{selfAdjoint } A_2 between their respective spaces of self-adjoint elements. Since ff is a unital completely positive map, its restriction to the self-adjoint parts is a unital positive linear map, which constitutes a channel between the order-unit spaces of observables.
