The bidual as a lattice

i. Overview

When the positive functionals on `E` form a lattice, any two elements `x` and `y` of the bidual have a least upper bound. Its value on a positive functional `φ` is the best split of `φ` between `x` and `y`: the supremum of `x φ₁ + y φ₂` over `φ = φ₁ + φ₂`. This is the Riesz–Kantorovich formula with the roles of elements and functionals exchanged. The bidual then is a lattice.

definition

Set of values x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) for splittings ϕ=ϕ1+ϕ2\phi = \phi_1 + \phi_2

Let EE be an ordered real vector space and E→pRE \to_p \mathbb{R} be the set of positive linear functionals on EE. For two elements x,yx, y in the bidual Bidual E\text{Bidual } E and a positive linear functional ϕ∈E→pR\phi \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, this set consists of all real values x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) where ϕ1\phi_1 and ϕ2\phi_2 are positive linear functionals such that ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ\phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi. Mathematically, this is the set {x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR,ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}\{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \}.

theorem

The set of values {x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}\{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \} is non-empty

Let EE be an ordered real vector space. For any two elements x,yx, y in the bidual Bidual E\text{Bidual } E and any positive linear functional ϕ∈E→pR\phi \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, the set of values {x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR,ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}\{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \} is non-empty.

theorem

x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)≤ϕ(f+g)x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \leq \phi(f + g) for dominated bidual elements x,yx, y

Let EE be an ordered real vector space. Let x,y∈Bidual Ex, y \in \text{Bidual } E be elements of the bidual and f,g∈Ef, g \in E be elements of EE. Suppose that for every positive linear functional ϕ∈E→pR\phi \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, the inequalities ∣x(ϕ)∣≤ϕ(f)|x(\phi)| \leq \phi(f) and ∣y(ϕ)∣≤ϕ(g)|y(\phi)| \leq \phi(g) hold. Then for any positive linear functionals ϕ,ϕ1,ϕ2\phi, \phi_1, \phi_2 such that ϕ=ϕ1+ϕ2\phi = \phi_1 + \phi_2, it follows that x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)≤ϕ(f+g).x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \leq \phi(f + g).

theorem

The set of split values x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) is bounded above

Let EE be an ordered real vector space. For any elements x,yx, y in the bidual Bidual E\text{Bidual } E and any positive linear functional ϕ:E→R\phi: E \to \mathbb{R}, the set of values {x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR,ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}\{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \} is bounded above in R\mathbb{R}.

definition

Best split value sup⁡{x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}\sup \{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \}

Let EE be an ordered real vector space, and let E→pRE \to_p \mathbb{R} denote the set of positive linear functionals on EE. For two elements x,yx, y in the bidual Bidual E\text{Bidual } E and a positive linear functional ϕ∈E→pR\phi \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, this function returns the supremum of the set of values x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) obtained by splitting ϕ\phi into two positive linear functionals ϕ1\phi_1 and ϕ2\phi_2. Mathematically, it is defined as: dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)=sup⁡{x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR,ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}\text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) = \sup \{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \} This value represents the "best split" of the functional ϕ\phi between the bidual elements xx and yy, which corresponds to the Riesz–Kantorovich formula for the supremum in the bidual.

theorem

x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)≤dsupFun(x,y,ϕ1+ϕ2)x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \leq \text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi_1 + \phi_2)

Let EE be an ordered real vector space. For any elements x,yx, y in the bidual Bidual E\text{Bidual } E and any positive linear functionals ϕ,ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR\phi, \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, if ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ\phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi, then x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)≤dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \leq \text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) where dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)=sup⁡{x(ψ1)+y(ψ2)∣ψ1,ψ2∈E→pR,ψ1+ψ2=ϕ}\text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) = \sup \{ x(\psi_1) + y(\psi_2) \mid \psi_1, \psi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \psi_1 + \psi_2 = \phi \}.

theorem

dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)≤r\text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) \le r if all split sums are ≤r\le r

Let EE be an ordered real vector space. Let x,y∈Bidual Ex, y \in \text{Bidual } E be elements of the bidual, ϕ∈E→pR\phi \in E \to_p \mathbb{R} be a positive linear functional, and r∈Rr \in \mathbb{R}. If for all positive linear functionals ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR\phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R} such that ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ\phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi, it holds that x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)≤rx(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \le r, then dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)≤r\text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) \le r, where dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)=sup⁡{x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR,ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}\text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) = \sup \{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \}.

theorem

dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)+dsupFun(x,y,ψ)≤dsupFun(x,y,ϕ+ψ)\text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) + \text{dsupFun}(x, y, \psi) \leq \text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi + \psi)

Let EE be an ordered real vector space and E→pRE \to_p \mathbb{R} denote the set of positive linear functionals on EE. For any two elements x,yx, y in the bidual Bidual E\text{Bidual } E and any positive linear functionals ϕ,ψ∈E→pR\phi, \psi \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, let the "best split" value be defined as dsupFun(x,y,ω)=sup⁡{x(ω1)+y(ω2)∣ω1,ω2∈E→pR,ω1+ω2=ω}\text{dsupFun}(x, y, \omega) = \sup \{ x(\omega_1) + y(\omega_2) \mid \omega_1, \omega_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \omega_1 + \omega_2 = \omega \}. Then the following inequality holds: dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)+dsupFun(x,y,ψ)≤dsupFun(x,y,ϕ+ψ)\text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) + \text{dsupFun}(x, y, \psi) \leq \text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi + \psi)

theorem

Additivity of the bidual best split value: dsupFun(x,y,ϕ+ψ)=dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)+dsupFun(x,y,ψ)\text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi + \psi) = \text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) + \text{dsupFun}(x, y, \psi)

Let EE be an ordered real vector space, and let E→pRE \to_p \mathbb{R} denote the set of positive linear functionals on EE. Let Bidual E\text{Bidual } E be the bidual of EE, consisting of functions x:(E→pR)→Rx: (E \to_p \mathbb{R}) \to \mathbb{R} that are additive, positively homogeneous, and dominated by some element of EE. For any two elements x,y∈Bidual Ex, y \in \text{Bidual } E and a positive linear functional ϕ∈E→pR\phi \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, let the "best split" value (representing the Riesz–Kantorovich formula for the supremum) be defined as: dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)=sup⁡{x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR,ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}\text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) = \sup \{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \} Then, for any x,y∈Bidual Ex, y \in \text{Bidual } E and any positive linear functionals ϕ,ψ∈E→pR\phi, \psi \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, the best split value is additive with respect to the functionals: dsupFun(x,y,ϕ+ψ)=dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)+dsupFun(x,y,ψ)\text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi + \psi) = \text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) + \text{dsupFun}(x, y, \psi)

theorem

dsupFun(x,y,0)=0\text{dsupFun}(x, y, 0) = 0

Let EE be an ordered real vector space and let E→pRE \to_p \mathbb{R} denote the set of positive linear functionals on EE. For any two elements x,yx, y in the bidual Bidual E\text{Bidual } E, the "best split" value of the zero functional, defined as dsupFun(x,y,0)=sup⁡{x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR,ϕ1+ϕ2=0}\text{dsupFun}(x, y, 0) = \sup \{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \phi_1 + \phi_2 = 0 \}, is equal to 00.

theorem

Positive homogeneity of the bidual supremum function dsupFun\text{dsupFun}

Let EE be an ordered real vector space. For any elements x,yx, y in the bidual of EE, any non-negative real number c∈R≥0c \in \mathbb{R}_{\ge 0}, and any positive linear functional ϕ∈E→pR\phi \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, the "best split" function dsupFun\text{dsupFun} satisfies: dsupFun(x,y,c⋅ϕ)=c⋅dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)\text{dsupFun}(x, y, c \cdot \phi) = c \cdot \text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) where dsupFun(x,y,ϕ)=sup⁡{x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR,ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}\text{dsupFun}(x, y, \phi) = \sup \{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \}.

definition

Least upper bound of bidual elements x∨yx \vee y

Let EE be an ordered real vector space and Bidual E\text{Bidual } E be its bidual space consisting of additive, positively homogeneous, and dominated functions on the set of positive linear functionals E→pRE \to_p \mathbb{R}. For any two elements x,y∈Bidual Ex, y \in \text{Bidual } E, this definition constructs their least upper bound (supremum), denoted as x∨yx \vee y, which is itself an element of Bidual E\text{Bidual } E. For a positive linear functional ϕ∈E→pR\phi \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, its value is determined by the Riesz–Kantorovich formula: (x∨y)(ϕ)=sup⁡{x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR,ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}(x \vee y)(\phi) = \sup \{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \} The definition ensures that this supremum satisfies the required properties of the bidual (additivity, positive homogeneity, and domination) to be a valid element of Bidual E\text{Bidual } E.

theorem

(x∨y)(ϕ)=sup⁡{x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}(x \vee y)(\phi) = \sup \{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \}

Let EE be an ordered real vector space and Bidual E\text{Bidual } E be its bidual space. For any elements x,y∈Bidual Ex, y \in \text{Bidual } E and any positive linear functional ϕ∈E→pR\phi \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, the value of the supremum x∨yx \vee y at ϕ\phi is given by the Riesz–Kantorovich formula: (x∨y)(ϕ)=sup⁡{x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR,ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}(x \vee y)(\phi) = \sup \{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \}

theorem

`dsup x y` is the least upper bound of {x,y}\{x, y\} in the bidual

Let EE be an ordered real vector space and Bidual E\text{Bidual } E be its bidual space, consisting of additive, positively homogeneous, and dominated functions on the set of positive linear functionals E→pRE \to_p \mathbb{R}. For any two elements x,y∈Bidual Ex, y \in \text{Bidual } E, let x∨yx \vee y (denoted in the formal statement as `dsup hE x y`) be the function defined by the Riesz–Kantorovich formula: (x∨y)(ϕ)=sup⁡{x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR,ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}(x \vee y)(\phi) = \sup \{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \} for each positive linear functional ϕ\phi. Then x∨yx \vee y is the least upper bound of the set {x,y}\{x, y\} with respect to the pointwise partial order on Bidual E\text{Bidual } E.

instance

Bidual E\text{Bidual } E is a lattice

Let EE be an ordered real vector space such that its positive linear functionals form a lattice. The bidual space Bidual E\text{Bidual } E is equipped with a lattice structure where the partial order is defined pointwise. For any two elements x,y∈Bidual Ex, y \in \text{Bidual } E, their supremum x∨yx \vee y is defined by the Riesz–Kantorovich formula: (x∨y)(ϕ)=sup⁡{x(ϕ1)+y(ϕ2)∣ϕ1,ϕ2∈E→pR,ϕ1+ϕ2=ϕ}(x \vee y)(\phi) = \sup \{ x(\phi_1) + y(\phi_2) \mid \phi_1, \phi_2 \in E \to_p \mathbb{R}, \phi_1 + \phi_2 = \phi \} for every positive linear functional ϕ\phi. The infimum x∧yx \wedge y is defined via the supremum and negation as x∧y=−((−x)∨(−y))x \wedge y = -((-x) \vee (-y)).
