Step approximation in vector lattices

i. Overview

Fix a nonnegative element `u` of a real vector lattice, a strong unit: every element is below some multiple of `u`. Every element is then close to a step function: split `u` into finitely many disjoint pieces, and on each piece replace the element by a constant multiple of the piece. The pieces form a partition of `u`: nonnegative, pairwise disjoint, adding up to `u`.

Finding the pieces needs least upper bounds of increasing sequences below `u`. Given `y`, the increasing sequence `n • y⁺ ⊓ u` approaches the part of `u` on which `y` is positive: its support. For an element `x` and a level `a`, the support of `x - a • u` is the piece on which `x` exceeds `a`. Cutting `u` at finitely many levels produces a partition on whose pieces `x` varies by at most the spacing of the levels. Several elements are handled by intersecting their partitions.

ii. Key results

- `VectorLattice.IsPartition` : a partition of `u`. - `VectorLattice.IsPartition.le_sum` : local upper bounds on the pieces of a partition give a global upper bound. - `VectorLattice.support_inf_sub` : the support of an element is a component of `u`. - `VectorLattice.exists_partition_approx` : finitely many elements are uniformly close to step functions on one common partition. This is Freudenthal's spectral theorem.

theorem

Disjointness passes to smaller nonnegative elements (w⊓v′=0w \sqcap v' = 0 and v≤v′  ⟹  w⊓v=0v \le v' \implies w \sqcap v = 0)

Let GG be a real vector lattice. For any elements w,v,v′∈Gw, v, v' \in G such that w≥0w \ge 0, v≥0v \ge 0, and v≤v′v \le v', if ww and v′v' are disjoint (i.e., their infimum w⊓v′w \sqcap v' is 00), then ww and vv are also disjoint (w⊓v=0w \sqcap v = 0). This confirms that disjointness is preserved when replacing one of the elements with a smaller nonnegative element.

definition

Partition of an element uu in a vector lattice

Given an element uu in a vector lattice GG, a collection of elements {si}i∈ι\{s_i\}_{i \in \iota} indexed by a finite set ι\iota is a partition of uu if: 1. Each element is non-negative, i.e., si≥0s_i \geq 0 for all i∈ιi \in \iota. 2. The elements are pairwise disjoint, meaning the infimum si⊓sj=0s_i \sqcap s_j = 0 for all i≠ji \neq j. 3. The sum of the elements equals uu, i.e., ∑i∈ιsi=u\sum_{i \in \iota} s_i = u.

theorem

A partition piece is disjoint from the sum of the remaining pieces

Let GG be a vector lattice and {sj}j∈ι\{s_j\}_{j \in \iota} be a partition of an element u∈Gu \in G indexed by a finite set ι\iota. For any i∈ιi \in \iota, the piece sis_i is disjoint from the sum of all other pieces in the partition, meaning their infimum is zero: si⊓∑j∈ι,j≠isj=0s_i \sqcap \sum_{j \in \iota, j \neq i} s_j = 0

theorem

Each element of a partition of uu is less than or equal to uu

Let uu be an element of a vector lattice GG. If {si}i∈ι\{s_i\}_{i \in \iota} is a partition of uu indexed by a finite set ι\iota, then for every i∈ιi \in \iota, the element sis_i satisfies si≤us_i \leq u.

theorem

si⊓(u−si)=0s_i \sqcap (u - s_i) = 0 for a piece sis_i of a partition of uu

Let uu be an element in a vector lattice GG. Suppose {si}i∈ι\{s_i\}_{i \in \iota} is a partition of uu (meaning si≥0s_i \geq 0 for all ii, si⊓sj=0s_i \sqcap s_j = 0 for i≠ji \neq j, and ∑i∈ιsi=u\sum_{i \in \iota} s_i = u). Then for any index i∈ιi \in \iota, the piece sis_i is disjoint from its complement relative to uu, such that the infimum si⊓(u−si)=0s_i \sqcap (u - s_i) = 0.

theorem

Differences of an Antitone Sequence of Components Form a Partition

Let GG be a vector lattice and u∈Gu \in G. Let e:N→Ge: \mathbb{N} \to G be an antitone sequence such that e0=ue_0 = u and eN=0e_N = 0 for some natural number NN. Suppose that for every j∈Nj \in \mathbb{N}, the following conditions hold: 1. 0≤ej≤u0 \leq e_j \leq u, and 2. ej⊓(u−ej)=0e_j \sqcap (u - e_j) = 0 (meaning each eje_j is a component of uu). Then the sequence of differences sj=ej−ej+1s_j = e_j - e_{j+1} for j∈{0,1,…,N−1}j \in \{0, 1, \dots, N-1\} forms a partition of uu. (A partition of uu consists of a finite collection of non-negative, pairwise disjoint elements whose sum is uu.)

theorem

The pairwise infima of two partitions form a partition

Let GG be a real vector lattice and uu be an element in GG. Let {si}i∈ι\{s_i\}_{i \in \iota} and {tj}j∈κ\{t_j\}_{j \in \kappa} be two partitions of uu indexed by finite sets ι\iota and κ\kappa, respectively. Then the collection of pairwise infima {si⊓tj}(i,j)∈ι×κ\{s_i \sqcap t_j\}_{(i, j) \in \iota \times \kappa} is also a partition of uu. Here, a collection of elements is a partition of uu if they are non-negative, pairwise disjoint (their infimum is zero), and their sum equals uu.

theorem

Composition with a bijection preserves partitions of an element uu

Let GG be a real vector lattice and uu be an element in GG. Suppose {si}i∈ι\{s_i\}_{i \in \iota} is a partition of uu indexed by a finite set ι\iota, meaning that si≥0s_i \geq 0 for all ii, si⊓sj=0s_i \sqcap s_j = 0 for i≠ji \neq j, and ∑i∈ιsi=u\sum_{i \in \iota} s_i = u. For any finite set κ\kappa and any bijection e:κ≃ιe : \kappa \simeq \iota, the reindexed collection {se(k)}k∈κ\{s_{e(k)}\}_{k \in \kappa} is also a partition of uu.

theorem

x⊓(M⋅u)=∑i(x⊓(M⋅si))x \sqcap (M \cdot u) = \sum_i (x \sqcap (M \cdot s_i)) for a partition {si}\{s_i\} of uu

Let GG be a real vector lattice and u∈Gu \in G be an element. Suppose {si}i∈ι\{s_i\}_{i \in \iota} is a partition of uu indexed by a finite set ι\iota (meaning si≥0s_i \ge 0, si⊓sj=0s_i \sqcap s_j = 0 for i≠ji \neq j, and ∑i∈ιsi=u\sum_{i \in \iota} s_i = u). For any non-negative element x∈Gx \in G and any non-negative real number M≥0M \geq 0, the following identity holds: x⊓(M⋅u)=∑i∈ι(x⊓(M⋅si))x \sqcap (M \cdot u) = \sum_{i \in \iota} (x \sqcap (M \cdot s_i)) where ⊓\sqcap denotes the infimum operation in the vector lattice.

theorem

If ci≤εc_i \leq \varepsilon for all ii, then ∑cisi≤εu\sum c_i s_i \leq \varepsilon u for a partition sis_i of uu

Let GG be a real vector lattice and {si}i∈ι\{s_i\}_{i \in \iota} be a partition of an element u∈Gu \in G indexed by a finite set ι\iota. For any collection of real coefficients cic_i and a real number ε\varepsilon, if ci≤εc_i \leq \varepsilon for all ii such that si≠0s_i \neq 0, then it holds that ∑i∈ιcisi≤εu.\sum_{i \in \iota} c_i s_i \leq \varepsilon u. A partition of uu is defined as a set of non-negative, pairwise disjoint elements that sum to uu.

theorem

ϵ⋅u≤∑ci⋅si\epsilon \cdot u \le \sum c_i \cdot s_i for coefficients ci≥ϵc_i \ge \epsilon

Let uu be an element in a real vector lattice GG and let {si}i∈ι\{s_i\}_{i \in \iota} be a partition of uu indexed by a finite set ι\iota (meaning si≥0s_i \ge 0, the elements are pairwise disjoint, and ∑i∈ιsi=u\sum_{i \in \iota} s_i = u). For any real number ϵ\epsilon and any set of real coefficients {ci}i∈ι\{c_i\}_{i \in \iota}, if ci≥ϵc_i \ge \epsilon for every ii such that si≠0s_i \neq 0, then it holds that ϵ⋅u≤∑i∈ιci⋅si.\epsilon \cdot u \le \sum_{i \in \iota} c_i \cdot s_i.

theorem

Inequality x−∑bjsj≤(x−biu)++∑j≠i∣bi−bj∣sjx - \sum b_j s_j \leq (x - b_i u)^+ + \sum_{j \neq i} |b_i - b_j| s_j for step function approximations in vector lattices

Let GG be a real vector lattice and let {sj}j∈ι\{s_j\}_{j \in \iota} be a finite partition of an element u∈Gu \in G (meaning sj≥0s_j \geq 0, the elements are pairwise disjoint, and ∑j∈ιsj=u\sum_{j \in \iota} s_j = u). For any element x∈Gx \in G and any set of real coefficients {bj}j∈ι\{b_j\}_{j \in \iota}, the following inequality holds for any index i∈ιi \in \iota: x−∑j∈ιbjsj≤(x−biu)++∑j≠i∣bi−bj∣sj x - \sum_{j \in \iota} b_j s_j \leq (x - b_i u)^+ + \sum_{j \neq i} |b_i - b_j| s_j where (⋅)+(\cdot)^+ denotes the positive part of an element in the lattice. This bound indicates that the difference between xx and its step function approximation is bounded by the positive part of the difference from a specific level bib_i plus the weighted sum of level variations on the other pieces of the partition.

theorem

The sum of scaled partition pieces is disjoint from any other scaled piece: (∑j≠icjsj)⊓Msi=0(\sum_{j \neq i} c_j s_j) \sqcap M s_i = 0

Let GG be a real vector lattice and {sj}j∈ι\{s_j\}_{j \in \iota} be a partition of an element in GG indexed by a finite set ι\iota. For any collection of non-negative real coefficients {cj}j∈ι\{c_j\}_{j \in \iota}, any specific index i∈ιi \in \iota, and any non-negative real number MM, it holds that (∑j∈ι∖{i}cjsj)⊓(Msi)=0,\left( \sum_{j \in \iota \setminus \{i\}} c_j s_j \right) \sqcap (M s_i) = 0, where ⊓\sqcap denotes the infimum (greatest lower bound) in the lattice.

theorem

Vanishing of the excess of xx over a step function on partition pieces

Let GG be a real vector lattice and {si}i∈ι\{s_i\}_{i \in \iota} be a partition of an element u∈Gu \in G (that is, si≥0s_i \geq 0, si⊓sj=0s_i \sqcap s_j = 0 for i≠ji \neq j, and ∑i∈ιsi=u\sum_{i \in \iota} s_i = u). Let x∈Gx \in G and b:ι→Rb: \iota \to \mathbb{R} be a collection of coefficients. If for every i∈ιi \in \iota, the positive part of x−biux - b_i u is disjoint from sis_i (i.e., (x−biu)+⊓si=0(x - b_i u)^+ \sqcap s_i = 0), then for any i∈ιi \in \iota and any non-negative real number M≥0M \geq 0, the positive part of the difference between xx and the step function ∑j∈ιbjsj\sum_{j \in \iota} b_j s_j is disjoint from MsiM s_i: (x−∑j∈ιbjsj)+⊓(Msi)=0.(x - \sum_{j \in \iota} b_j s_j)^+ \sqcap (M s_i) = 0.

theorem

Local upper bounds on a partition imply the global bound x≤∑bi⋅six \le \sum b_i \cdot s_i

Let GG be a real vector lattice and let u∈Gu \in G be a strong unit. Suppose {si}i∈ι\{s_i\}_{i \in \iota} is a finite partition of uu, meaning si≥0s_i \geq 0, si⊓sj=0s_i \sqcap s_j = 0 for i≠ji \neq j, and ∑i∈ιsi=u\sum_{i \in \iota} s_i = u. For any element x∈Gx \in G and real coefficients bib_i, if xx is locally bounded by bib_i on each piece sis_i in the sense that (x−bi⋅u)+⊓si=0(x - b_i \cdot u)^+ \sqcap s_i = 0 for all i∈ιi \in \iota, then xx is globally bounded by the corresponding step function: x≤∑i∈ιbi⋅six \le \sum_{i \in \iota} b_i \cdot s_i where (⋅)+(\cdot)^+ denotes the positive part and ⊓\sqcap denotes the infimum in the vector lattice.

theorem

Local lower bounds on a partition imply ∑aisi≤x\sum a_i s_i \le x

Let GG be a real vector lattice and u∈Gu \in G be a strong unit. Suppose {si}i∈ι\{s_i\}_{i \in \iota} is a partition of uu indexed by a finite set ι\iota. For any element x∈Gx \in G and any scalars ai∈Ra_i \in \mathbb{R}, if for every i∈ιi \in \iota the condition (aiu−x)+⊓si=0(a_i u - x)^+ \sqcap s_i = 0 holds, then ∑i∈ιaisi≤x\sum_{i \in \iota} a_i s_i \le x where (y)+=y∨0(y)^+ = y \vee 0 denotes the positive part of yy and ⊓\sqcap denotes the infimum (meet) in the lattice. This theorem expresses that if xx is locally bounded below by aia_i on each piece sis_i of the partition, then xx is globally bounded below by the step function formed by these values.

Support of xx exceeding the level L+jδL + j \delta

In a real vector lattice GG with a fixed strong unit uu, for a given element x∈Gx \in G, a base level L∈RL \in \mathbb{R}, and a step size δ∈R\delta \in \mathbb{R}, this function maps a natural number jj to the support of x−(L+jδ)⋅ux - (L + j \delta) \cdot u. Assume that GG satisfies the property that every monotone increasing sequence bounded above by uu has a supremum in GG. For any element x∈Gx \in G and any real number δ>0\delta > 0, there exists a natural number NN, a partition {sj}j=1N\{s_j\}_{j=1}^N of uu, and real numbers {aj}j=1N\{a_j\}_{j=1}^N such that for each jj, the following conditions hold: (x−(aj+δ)⋅u)+⊓sj=0and(aj⋅u−x)+⊓sj=0(x - (a_j + \delta) \cdot u)^+ \sqcap s_j = 0 \quad \text{and} \quad (a_j \cdot u - x)^+ \sqcap s_j = 0 where (y)+(y)^+ denotes the positive part y⊔0y \sqcup 0 and ⊓\sqcap denotes the infimum in the lattice. These conditions imply that on each piece sjs_j of the partition, xx is bounded between aj⋅ua_j \cdot u and (aj+δ)⋅u(a_j + \delta) \cdot u.

theorem

Approximation bounds on a piece c′c' hold for any smaller piece c≤c′c \leq c'

Let GG be a real vector lattice and u∈Gu \in G. For any elements x,c,c′∈Gx, c, c' \in G and real numbers a,δ∈Ra, \delta \in \mathbb{R}, suppose 0≤c≤c′0 \leq c \leq c'. If xx satisfies the approximation bounds on c′c' defined by (x−(a+δ)⋅u)+⊓c′=0(x - (a + \delta) \cdot u)^+ \sqcap c' = 0 and (a⋅u−x)+⊓c′=0(a \cdot u - x)^+ \sqcap c' = 0, then xx also satisfies the same bounds on cc, namely (x−(a+δ)⋅u)+⊓c=0(x - (a + \delta) \cdot u)^+ \sqcap c = 0 and (a⋅u−x)+⊓c=0(a \cdot u - x)^+ \sqcap c = 0.

Freudenthal's Spectral Theorem: Finitely many elements are δ\delta-approximated by step functions on a common partition

Let GG be a real vector lattice and u∈Gu \in G be a non-negative element (u≥0u \ge 0). Suppose uu is a **strong unit** (for every x∈Gx \in G, there exists n∈Nn \in \mathbb{N} such that x≤n⋅ux \le n \cdot u) and that GG satisfies the **monotone supremum property** with respect to uu (every monotonically increasing sequence bounded above by uu has a least upper bound in GG). For any finite collection of elements {xk}k=1n\{x_k\}_{k=1}^n in GG and any real δ>0\delta > 0, there exists a natural number mm, a partition {si}i=1m\{s_i\}_{i=1}^m of uu, and real coefficients aika_{ik} (for 1≤i≤m1 \le i \le m and 1≤k≤n1 \le k \le n) such that for all ii and kk: (xk−(aik+δ)⋅u)+⊓si=0and(aik⋅u−xk)+⊓si=0(x_k - (a_{ik} + \delta) \cdot u)^+ \sqcap s_i = 0 \quad \text{and} \quad (a_{ik} \cdot u - x_k)^+ \sqcap s_i = 0 Here, y+=sup⁡(y,0)y^+ = \sup(y, 0) denotes the positive part of an element, ⊓\sqcap denotes the infimum, and a collection {si}\{s_i\} is a **partition** of uu if si≥0s_i \ge 0 for all ii, si⊓sj=0s_i \sqcap s_j = 0 for i≠ji \neq j, and ∑i=1msi=u\sum_{i=1}^m s_i = u.
