Energy–position uncertainty in the open tight binding chain

The Hamiltonian and the position operator of the tight binding chain with open boundary conditions, acting on the site amplitudes in `ℂ^N`, are observables of the C⋆-algebra of operators on `ℂ^N`. The Robertson–Schrödinger relation then bounds their spreads in every state by the expected bracket `⁅H, X⁆ = -(i/2) (H X - X H)`, which only sees hopping: its matrix elements are `-(i/2) a (n - m) ⟨m|H|n⟩`.

Main results

  • `toObservable` : a hermitian operator of the chain as an observable on `ℂ^N`.
  • `openHamiltonianObservable`, `positionObservable` : `H` and `X` as observables.
  • `inner_bracket_openHamiltonian_position` : the matrix elements of `⁅H, X⁆`.
  • `inner_bracket_openHamiltonian_position_eq` : `⁅H, X⁆` moves exactly one site `a`.
  • `robertson_schrodinger_openHamiltonian_position` : the energy–position uncertainty relation.

definition

Symmetric operator as an observable on CN\mathbb{C}^N

Given a tight binding chain TT with NN sites and its associated Hilbert space HT≅CN\mathcal{H}_T \cong \mathbb{C}^N, this definition converts a symmetric linear operator A:HT→HTA: \mathcal{H}_T \to \mathcal{H}_T into an **observable**. The observable is represented as a self-adjoint element in the algebra of continuous linear operators L(CN)\mathcal{L}(\mathbb{C}^N) by identifying the chain's Hilbert space with the standard complex Euclidean space CN\mathbb{C}^N via a canonical isometric equivalence.

abbrev

Open Hamiltonian as an observable HopenH_{\text{open}}

For a tight-binding chain TT with NN sites, the **open Hamiltonian observable** is the Hamiltonian operator HopenH_{\text{open}} with open boundary conditions, realized as a self-adjoint element of the algebra of continuous linear operators L(CN)\mathcal{L}(\mathbb{C}^N). It is constructed by applying the conversion function `toObservable` to the operator HopenH_{\text{open}} and the proof of its Hermiticity (⟨Hopenψ,ϕ⟩=⟨ψ,Hopenϕ⟩\langle H_{\text{open}} \psi, \phi \rangle = \langle \psi, H_{\text{open}} \phi \rangle).

abbrev

Position operator XX as an observable

For a tight binding chain TT with NN sites and lattice spacing aa, the position operator XX is defined as an observable on the Hilbert space H≅CN\mathcal{H} \cong \mathbb{C}^N. This observable corresponds to the self-adjoint linear operator: X=∑n=0N−1(a⋅n)∣n⟩⟨n∣X = \sum_{n=0}^{N-1} (a \cdot n) |n\rangle\langle n| where n∈{0,…,N−1}n \in \{0, \dots, N-1\} is the site index and ∣n⟩⟨n∣|n\rangle\langle n| is the projector onto the localized basis state at site nn. It is constructed by identifying the Hermitian position operator with a self-adjoint element of the algebra of continuous linear operators on CN\mathbb{C}^N.

Matrix elements of the bracket ⟦H,X⟧\llbracket H, X \rrbracket for the open tight binding chain

Let TT be a tight binding chain with NN sites and lattice spacing aa. Let HH be the open boundary Hamiltonian observable and XX be the position observable. Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty relation for HH and XX in the open tight-binding chain

For a tight-binding chain with NN sites and open boundary conditions, let HH be the open Hamiltonian observable and XX be the position observable. For any state ω\omega on the C*-algebra of linear operators on CN\mathbb{C}^N, the Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty relation holds: Covω(H,X)2+ω⟨⟦H,X⟧⟩2≤Varω(H)⋅Varω(X)\text{Cov}_\omega(H, X)^2 + \omega\langle \llbracket H, X \rrbracket \rangle^2 \le \text{Var}_\omega(H) \cdot \text{Var}_\omega(X) where Covω(H,X)\text{Cov}_\omega(H, X) is the covariance of HH and XX in state ω\omega, Varω(H)\text{Var}_\omega(H) and Varω(X)\text{Var}_\omega(X) are the variances of the respective observables, and ω⟨⟦H,X⟧⟩\omega\langle \llbracket H, X \rrbracket \rangle is the expectation value of the Lie bracket ⟦H,X⟧=−i2(HX−XH)\llbracket H, X \rrbracket = -\frac{i}{2}(HX - XH).
