PhyslibAlpha.CondensedMatter.TightBindingChain.SpeedLimit
The speed limit of the open tight binding chain
i. Overview
For `t ≠ 0` the current eigenstates `ψ_1, …, ψ_N` carry distinct currents, so, normalized, they form an orthonormal basis. Every current `2 a t cos (k π / (N + 1))` is at most `maxCurrent = 2 |a t| cos (π / (N + 1))` in absolute value, hence so is the current `⟨J⟩` of every state, pure or mixed: no state moves faster. The maximal current state reaches the bound.
ii. Key results
- `currentBasis` : the orthonormal basis of normalized current eigenstates. - `re_inner_current_eq_sum` : `re ⟨ψ|J|ψ⟩ = ∑ k, λ_k |⟨k|ψ⟩|²` in that basis. - `abs_currentEigenvalue_le` : `|2 a t cos (k π / (N + 1))| ≤ maxCurrent` for `1 ≤ k ≤ N`. - `expectation_current_maxCurrentState` : `⟨J⟩ = 2 a t cos (π / (N + 1))` in the maximal current state. - `abs_expectation_current_le` : `|⟨J⟩| ≤ maxCurrent` in every state. - `abs_expectation_current_maxCurrentState` : the maximal current state moves at `maxCurrent`.

Maximum current of an open tight-binding chain
For an open tight-binding chain with sites, lattice constant , and hopping parameter , the maximum current is defined as:
for Current Eigenvalues in a Tight-Binding Chain
For an open tight-binding chain with sites, lattice constant , and hopping parameter , let be the current eigenvalue for . Then the absolute value of is less than or equal to the maximum current , that is:
Normalized current eigenstate of a tight-binding chain
For an open tight-binding chain with sites, the -th normalized current basis vector (where ) is defined as: where is the unnormalized current eigenstate associated with the quantum number . These vectors form an orthonormal basis for the Hilbert space of the chain.
The current basis vectors have unit norm
For an open tight-binding chain with sites, the -th normalized current basis vector (where ) has unit norm, i.e.,
The normalized current eigenstates are orthonormal for
For an open tight-binding chain with sites and a non-zero hopping parameter , the set of normalized current eigenstates forms an orthonormal system in the Hilbert space . That is, the complex inner product of any two such vectors satisfies , where is the Kronecker delta.
Orthonormal basis of current eigenstates
For an open tight-binding chain with sites and a non-zero hopping parameter , `currentBasis` is the orthonormal basis of the -dimensional complex Hilbert space . This basis consists of the normalized current eigenstates (where ).
Eigenvalue Equation for the Current Operator:
For an open tight-binding chain with sites and a non-zero hopping parameter , let be the orthonormal basis of current eigenstates. For each , the current operator acts on the -th basis vector according to the eigenvalue equation: where is the current eigenvalue associated with the quantum number .
For an open tight-binding chain with sites and a non-zero hopping parameter , let be the current operator and be the orthonormal basis of current eigenstates with corresponding eigenvalues . For any vector in the Hilbert space, the real part of the expectation value of the current is given by the sum of the current eigenvalues weighted by the squared magnitudes of the projections of onto the respective basis vectors: where denotes the complex inner product.
Upper Bound for the Current Expectation Value
For an open tight-binding chain with a non-zero hopping parameter , let be its Hilbert space and be the current operator. For any vector , the absolute value of the real part of the inner product is bounded by the maximum current scaled by the squared norm of : where is the maximum possible current for the chain.
Speed Limit for the Current Expectation Value
For an open tight-binding chain with sites, lattice constant , and non-zero hopping parameter , let be the current operator. For any state of the system (defined as a unital positive linear map on the algebra of operators), the absolute value of the expectation value of the current is bounded by the maximum current : where the "speed limit" is given by .
Expectation Value of Current in the Maximal Current State Equals
For an open tight-binding chain with sites, lattice constant , and hopping parameter , let be the current observable and be the maximal current vector state. The expectation value of the current in this state is:
The maximal current state attains the speed limit
For an open tight-binding chain with sites, lattice constant , and hopping parameter , let be the current observable and be the maximal current vector state. The absolute value of the expectation value of the current in this state is equal to the maximum current : where the maximum current (the "speed limit") is defined as .
