Saturation of the uncertainty relation in the maximal current state
i. Overview
The energy–position uncertainty relation is an equality exactly when the centered Gram defect vanishes, that is when the energy and position fluctuations of the state are parallel. In the maximal current state of an open chain with `N ≥ 2` sites and hopping `t ≠ 0` this happens only for `N = 2` and `N = 3`: the first two sites force `4 cos² (π / (N + 1)) = N - 1`. From four sites on, the relation is strict.

Energy fluctuation of the maximal current state at site
For a tight-binding chain with sites and hopping parameter , let be the Hamiltonian with open boundary conditions and be the maximal current state. For any site , the projection of the energy fluctuation vector onto the localized state is given by where is the imaginary unit.
For an open tight-binding chain with sites and lattice spacing , let be the maximal current state and be the position operator. For any site index , the inner product of the -th localized state with the position fluctuation vector is given by: where is the expectation value of the position in the maximal current state.
The centered Gram defect of and in the maximal current state vanishes iff
Consider a tight-binding chain with sites and hopping parameter . If and , the centered Gram defect of the open Hamiltonian and the position observable in the maximal current vector state is zero if and only if or . That is,
The Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty relation for the maximal current state is an equality iff
Consider an open tight-binding chain with sites, hopping parameter , and lattice spacing . Let be the maximal current vector state, be the open Hamiltonian observable, and be the position observable. The Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty relation saturates, satisfying the equality if and only if the number of sites is 2 or 3.
Strict Robertson–Schrödinger Uncertainty Relation for in the Maximal Current State
For an open tight-binding chain with sites, lattice spacing , and a non-zero hopping parameter , if the number of sites , then the Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty relation for the energy (Hamiltonian ) and position () in the maximal current state is a strict inequality: where and denote the covariance and variance in the state , respectively.
