The tight binding chain with open boundary conditions

i. Overview

A finite piece of a 1d solid has two ends: the electron cannot hop from the last site back to the first. This is the tight binding chain with open boundary conditions. It also carries a position operator, which the periodic chain lacks, since there the site `N` is identified with the site `0`.

ii. Key results

  • `position` : the position operator `X = ∑ n, a n |n⟩⟨n|`.
  • `openHamiltonian` : the Hamiltonian with open boundary conditions.
  • `inner_openHamiltonian` : the open chain only hops between neighbouring sites.
  • `inner_commutator_position` : `⟨m|(A X - X A)|n⟩ = a (n - m) ⟨m|A|n⟩`.

definition

Position operator XX

For a tight binding chain TT with NN sites and lattice spacing aa, the position operator XX is the C\mathbb{C}-linear operator on the Hilbert space H\mathcal{H} defined by: X=∑n=0N−1(a⋅n)∣n⟩⟨n∣X = \sum_{n=0}^{N-1} (a \cdot n) |n\rangle\langle n| where n∈{0,…,N−1}n \in \{0, \dots, N-1\} is the site index, and ∣n⟩⟨n∣|n\rangle\langle n| is the outer product operator (projector) onto the localized basis state at site nn. This operator measures the position of a particle relative to site 00.

theorem

X∣n⟩=(an)∣n⟩X |n\rangle = (an) |n\rangle

For a tight binding chain TT with NN sites and lattice spacing aa, let XX be the position operator and {∣n⟩}n=0N−1\{|n\rangle\}_{n=0}^{N-1} be the orthonormal basis of localized states. For any site index n∈{0,…,N−1}n \in \{0, \dots, N-1\}, the action of the position operator on the localized state ∣n⟩|n\rangle is given by: X∣n⟩=(a⋅n)∣n⟩X |n\rangle = (a \cdot n) |n\rangle This identity confirms that the localized states are the eigenstates of the position operator, with eigenvalues corresponding to the physical position of each site.

theorem

The position operator XX is Hermitian

For any states ψ\psi and ϕ\phi in the Hilbert space H\mathcal{H} of a tight binding chain TT, the position operator XX is Hermitian, meaning it satisfies the identity: ⟨Xψ,ϕ⟩=⟨ψ,Xϕ⟩\langle X \psi, \phi \rangle = \langle \psi, X \phi \rangle where ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\langle \cdot, \cdot \rangle denotes the complex inner product on H\mathcal{H}.

definition

Hamiltonian of the tight binding chain with open boundary conditions HopenH_{\text{open}}

For a tight binding chain TT with NN sites and hopping parameter tt, the open boundary Hamiltonian HopenH_{\text{open}} is a linear operator on the NN-dimensional complex Hilbert space H≅CN\mathcal{H} \cong \mathbb{C}^N. It is defined by modifying the periodic Hamiltonian HH to remove the hopping terms between the first site ∣0⟩|0\rangle and the last site ∣N−1⟩|N-1\rangle: Hopen=H+t(∣0⟩⟨N−1∣+∣N−1⟩⟨0∣) H_{\text{open}} = H + t (|0\rangle\langle N-1| + |N-1\rangle\langle 0|) where {∣n⟩}n=0N−1\{|n\rangle\}_{n=0}^{N-1} are the orthonormal localized basis states. This operator represents a 1D system where electrons can hop between adjacent sites but cannot hop from the last site back to the first.

theorem

The Hamiltonian HopenH_{\text{open}} is Hermitian

For a tight binding chain TT with Hilbert space H\mathcal{H}, the Hamiltonian with open boundary conditions HopenH_{\text{open}} is a Hermitian operator. Specifically, for any states ψ,ϕ∈H\psi, \phi \in \mathcal{H}, the complex inner product satisfies: ⟨Hopenψ,ϕ⟩=⟨ψ,Hopenϕ⟩\langle H_{\text{open}} \psi, \phi \rangle = \langle \psi, H_{\text{open}} \phi \rangle

theorem

Matrix Elements of the Open Tight Binding Hamiltonian HopenH_{\text{open}}

For a tight binding chain TT with NN sites, let HopenH_{\text{open}} be the Hamiltonian with open boundary conditions, E0E_0 the on-site energy, and tt the hopping parameter. Let {∣n⟩}n=0N−1\{|n\rangle\}_{n=0}^{N-1} be the orthonormal basis of localized states. For any site indices m,n∈{0,…,N−1}m, n \in \{0, \dots, N-1\}, the matrix elements of the Hamiltonian are given by: ⟨m∣Hopen∣n⟩={E0if m=n−tif m+1=n or n+1=m0otherwise \langle m | H_{\text{open}} | n \rangle = \begin{cases} E_0 & \text{if } m = n \\ -t & \text{if } m + 1 = n \text{ or } n + 1 = m \\ 0 & \text{otherwise} \end{cases} This indicates that the particle can only hop between adjacent sites with amplitude −t-t, while the diagonal elements represent the on-site energy E0E_0.

theorem

Matrix elements of the commutator [A,X][A, X] in a tight binding chain

Let TT be a tight binding chain with NN sites and lattice spacing aa. Let H\mathcal{H} be its associated NN-dimensional complex Hilbert space with an orthonormal basis of localized states {∣n⟩}n=0N−1\{|n\rangle\}_{n=0}^{N-1}. The position operator XX is defined as X=∑n=0N−1(a⋅n)∣n⟩⟨n∣X = \sum_{n=0}^{N-1} (a \cdot n) |n\rangle\langle n|. For any linear operator AA on H\mathcal{H} and any site indices m,n∈{0,…,N−1}m, n \in \{0, \dots, N-1\}, the matrix elements of the commutator [A,X]=AX−XA[A, X] = AX - XA satisfy: ⟨m∣[A,X]∣n⟩=a(n−m)⟨m∣A∣n⟩\langle m | [A, X] | n \rangle = a(n - m) \langle m | A | n \rangle where ⟨m∣A∣n⟩\langle m | A | n \rangle denotes the inner product ⟨m,An⟩\langle m, A n \rangle.
