The maximal current state of the open tight binding chain

i. Overview

The longest standing wave, the current eigenstate with `k = 1`, carries the largest current `2 a t cos (π / (N + 1))` among the current eigenstates when `t ≥ 0`. Normalized, it is the maximal current state. It sits at the centre of the chain, `⟨X⟩ = a (N - 1) / 2`, at the centre of the band, `⟨H⟩ = E0`, and `⟨⁅H, X⁆⟩ = -a t cos (π / (N + 1))` is the bound of its energy–position uncertainty relation.

theorem

For t≥0t \geq 0, the k=1k=1 eigenstate has the maximal current eigenvalue

In an open tight-binding chain with NN sites, lattice constant aa, and hopping parameter t≥0t \geq 0, the current eigenvalue IkI_k associated with the quantum number kk satisfies Ik≤I1I_k \leq I_1 for all 1≤k≤N1 \leq k \leq N. Here, the current eigenvalue is defined as Ik=2atcos⁡(kπN+1)I_k = 2at \cos\left(\frac{k\pi}{N+1}\right).

theorem

For a tight-binding chain TT with NN sites, let HopenH_{\text{open}} be the Hamiltonian with open boundary conditions, tt be the hopping parameter, and E0E_0 be the on-site energy. For any quantum number k∈Nk \in \mathbb{N} and any site index m∈{0,…,N−1}m \in \{0, \dots, N-1\}, the matrix element of the Hamiltonian between the localized state ∣m⟩|m\rangle and the current eigenstate ∣ψk⟩|\psi_k\rangle is given by: ⟨m∣Hopen∣ψk⟩=E0⟨m∣ψk⟩−2tsin⁡θ⋅im+1cos⁡((m+1)θ)\langle m | H_{\text{open}} | \psi_k \rangle = E_0 \langle m | \psi_k \rangle - 2 t \sin \theta \cdot i^{m+1} \cos((m+1) \theta) where θ=kπN+1\theta = \frac{k \pi}{N + 1} and ii is the imaginary unit.

Maximal current state ∣ψmax⟩|\psi_{\text{max}}\rangle

For an open tight-binding chain TT with NN sites, the maximal current state ∣ψmax⟩|\psi_{\text{max}}\rangle is a normalized vector in the Hilbert space defined as the current eigenstate corresponding to the quantum number k=1k=1, scaled by a normalization factor 2/(N+1)\sqrt{2/(N+1)}. Expressed in the basis of localized states {∣n⟩}n=0N−1\{|n\rangle\}_{n=0}^{N-1}, the state is given by: ∣ψmax⟩=2N+1∑n=0N−1insin⁡((n+1)πN+1)∣n⟩|\psi_{\text{max}}\rangle = \sqrt{\frac{2}{N+1}} \sum_{n=0}^{N-1} i^n \sin\left(\frac{(n+1) \pi}{N+1}\right) |n\rangle where ii is the imaginary unit.

For an open tight-binding chain TT, the norm of the maximal current state ∣ψmax⟩|\psi_{\text{max}}\rangle is equal to 1: ∥ψmax∥=1\|\psi_{\text{max}}\| = 1

theorem

⟨m∣ψmax⟩=2N+1imsin⁡((m+1)πN+1)\langle m | \psi_{\text{max}} \rangle = \sqrt{\frac{2}{N+1}} i^m \sin\left(\frac{(m+1) \pi}{N+1}\right)

For an open tight-binding chain with NN sites, let ∣ψmax⟩|\psi_{\text{max}}\rangle denote the maximal current state and ∣m⟩|m\rangle be the localized state at site mm for 0≤m<N0 \le m < N. The amplitude of the maximal current state at site mm, given by the complex inner product ⟨m∣ψmax⟩\langle m | \psi_{\text{max}} \rangle, is ⟨m∣ψmax⟩=2N+1imsin⁡((m+1)πN+1)\langle m | \psi_{\text{max}} \rangle = \sqrt{\frac{2}{N+1}} i^m \sin\left(\frac{(m+1) \pi}{N+1}\right) where ii is the imaginary unit.

abbrev

Maximal current vector state ωmax\omega_{\text{max}}

For an open tight-binding chain TT with Hilbert space H\mathcal{H}, the maximal current vector state ωmax\omega_{\text{max}} is the state on the algebra of continuous linear operators B(H)\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H}) defined by the unit vector ∣ψmax⟩|\psi_{\text{max}}\rangle. This state maps any operator A∈B(H)A \in \mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H}) to its expectation value in the maximal current state, ωmax(A)=⟨ψmax∣A∣ψmax⟩\omega_{\text{max}}(A) = \langle \psi_{\text{max}} | A | \psi_{\text{max}} \rangle.

theorem

Expectation value in the maximal current state ωmax⟨A⟩=Re(⟨ψmax∣A∣ψmax⟩)\omega_{\text{max}}\langle A \rangle = \text{Re}(\langle \psi_{\text{max}} | A | \psi_{\text{max}} \rangle)

For an open tight-binding chain TT with Hilbert space H\mathcal{H} and maximal current state ∣ψmax⟩|\psi_{\text{max}}\rangle, the expectation value of any observable (self-adjoint operator) AA in the state ωmax\omega_{\text{max}} is given by the real part of the diagonal matrix element ⟨ψmax∣A∣ψmax⟩\langle \psi_{\text{max}} | A | \psi_{\text{max}} \rangle: ωmax⟨A⟩=Re(⟨ψmax∣A∣ψmax⟩)\omega_{\text{max}}\langle A \rangle = \text{Re}(\langle \psi_{\text{max}} | A | \psi_{\text{max}} \rangle) where ωmax⟨A⟩\omega_{\text{max}}\langle A \rangle denotes the expectation value of the observable AA in the maximal current state.

For an open tight-binding chain TT, the expectation value of the open Hamiltonian observable HopenH_{\text{open}} in the maximal current state ωmax\omega_{\text{max}} is equal to the onsite energy E0E_0, expressed as: ωmax⟨Hopen⟩=E0\omega_{\text{max}}\langle H_{\text{open}} \rangle = E_0

theorem

The expectation value of position in the maximal current state is a(N−1)2\frac{a(N-1)}{2}

For an open tight-binding chain TT with NN sites and lattice spacing aa, the expectation value of the position observable XX in the maximal current state ωmax\omega_{\text{max}} is given by: ωmax⟨X⟩=a(N−1)2\omega_{\text{max}}\langle X \rangle = \frac{a(N - 1)}{2} This indicates that the maximal current state is centered at the physical midpoint of the chain.

For an open tight-binding chain with NN sites, lattice spacing aa, and hopping parameter tt, the Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty relation for the Hamiltonian HH and the position operator XX in the maximal current state ωmax\omega_{\text{max}} is given by: Covωmax(H,X)2+(atcos⁡(πN+1))2≤Varωmax(H)⋅Varωmax(X)\text{Cov}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(H, X)^2 + \left( a t \cos \left( \frac{\pi}{N + 1} \right) \right)^2 \le \text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(H) \cdot \text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(X) where Varωmax(⋅)\text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(\cdot) and Covωmax(⋅,⋅)\text{Cov}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(\cdot, \cdot) denote the variance and covariance of the observables in the state ωmax\omega_{\text{max}}, respectively.
