Mandelstam–Tamm and Cramér–Rao in the maximal current state

i. Overview

In the maximal current state the current is `⟨J⟩ = 2 a t cos (π / (N + 1))` (`expectation_current_maxCurrentState`), and the Mandelstam–Tamm ratio `⟨J⟩² / (4 Var H · Var X)` is exactly `1 / C_Nava²`. Mandelstam–Tamm and Cramér–Rao are therefore attained together, exactly for `N = 2` and `N = 3`, and both are missed from four sites on. On the cube, each axis has the ratio `1 / C_Nava²` of its own chain.

ii. Key results

  • `mandelstamTammRatio_maxCurrentState` : the ratio is `1 / C_Nava²`.
  • `mandelstamTammRatio_maxCurrentState_eq_one_iff` : both bounds are attained iff `N = 2, 3`.
  • `mandelstamTammRatio_maxCurrentState_lt_one` : both are missed for `N ≥ 4`.
  • `mandelstamTammRatio_alongX` (and `Y`, `Z`) : each axis of the cube has the ratio of its chain.

theorem

The Mandelstam–Tamm ratio in the maximal current state is 1/CNava21 / C_{\text{Nava}}^2

For an open tight-binding chain TT, the Mandelstam–Tamm ratio evaluated in the maximal current state ωmax\omega_{\text{max}} is equal to 1/CNava21/C_{\text{Nava}}^2. Mathematically, ⟨J⟩ωmax24Varωmax(H)⋅Varωmax(X)=1CNava2\frac{\langle J \rangle_{\omega_{\text{max}}}^2}{4 \text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(H) \cdot \text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(X)} = \frac{1}{C_{\text{Nava}}^2} where ⟨J⟩ωmax\langle J \rangle_{\omega_{\text{max}}} is the expectation value of the current operator JJ, Varωmax(H)\text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(H) and Varωmax(X)\text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(X) are the variances of the Hamiltonian HH and the position operator XX in the state ωmax\omega_{\text{max}}, and CNavaC_{\text{Nava}} is the uncertainty constant of the chain.

theorem

The Mandelstam–Tamm ratio in the maximal current state is 11 if and only if N=2,3N = 2, 3

For an open tight-binding chain with N≥2N \ge 2 sites and a non-zero hopping parameter t≠0t \neq 0, the Mandelstam–Tamm ratio (representing the saturation of the Mandelstam–Tamm and quantum Cramér–Rao bounds) in the maximal current state ωmax\omega_{\text{max}}, defined as ⟨J⟩ωmax24Varωmax(H)⋅Varωmax(X)\frac{\langle J \rangle_{\omega_{\text{max}}}^2}{4 \text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(H) \cdot \text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(X)} is equal to 11 if and only if N=2N = 2 or N=3N = 3. Here, ⟨J⟩\langle J \rangle is the expectation value of the current, and Var(H)\text{Var}(H) and Var(X)\text{Var}(X) are the variances of the Hamiltonian and position observables, respectively.

theorem

The Mandelstam–Tamm ratio <1< 1 for N≥4N \ge 4 in the maximal current state

For a tight-binding chain TT with NN sites and a non-zero hopping parameter t≠0t \neq 0, if the number of sites NN is at least 4, then the Mandelstam–Tamm ratio of the maximal current state ωmax\omega_{\text{max}} is strictly less than 1: ⟨J⟩ωmax24Varωmax(H)⋅Varωmax(X)<1. \frac{\langle J \rangle_{\omega_{\text{max}}}^2}{4 \text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(H) \cdot \text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(X)} < 1. Here, ⟨J⟩ωmax\langle J \rangle_{\omega_{\text{max}}} is the expectation value of the current operator, and Varωmax(H)\text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(H) and Varωmax(X)\text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(X) are the variances of the Hamiltonian and position operators, respectively.

theorem

The Mandelstam–Tamm ratio along the xx-axis of the tight-binding cube equals 1/CNava21 / C_{\text{Nava}}^2

Consider a tight-binding cube constructed from three open chains TxT_x, TyT_y, and TzT_z. Let ωmax\omega_{\text{max}} be the maximal current vector state of the cube. Let JxJ_x, HxH_x, and XxX_x be the current, Hamiltonian, and position observables of the chain TxT_x, respectively, embedded to act along the xx-axis of the cube. The ratio of the squared expectation value of the current to the product of the variances of the Hamiltonian and position (the Mandelstam–Tamm ratio) along the xx-axis is given by: ⟨Jx⟩ωmax24Varωmax(Hx)Varωmax(Xx)=1CNava2\frac{\langle J_x \rangle_{\omega_{\text{max}}}^2}{4 \text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(H_x) \text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max}}}(X_x)} = \frac{1}{C_{\text{Nava}}^2} where CNavaC_{\text{Nava}} is the uncertainty constant of the tight-binding chain TxT_x.

theorem

The Mandelstam–Tamm ratio along the yy-axis of a tight-binding cube in the maximal current state is 1/CNava,y21/C_{\text{Nava}, y}^2

Consider a 3D tight-binding cube formed by the combination of three open chains Tx,TyT_x, T_y, and TzT_z. Let ωmax,cube\omega_{\text{max,cube}} be the maximal current vector state of this cube. Let JyJ_y, HyH_y, and XyX_y denote the current operator, the open Hamiltonian, and the position operator of the chain TyT_y, respectively, each acting along the yy-axis of the cube (i.e., as Ix⊗Ay⊗IzI_x \otimes A_y \otimes I_z on the cube's Hilbert space). Then the Mandelstam–Tamm ratio for these observables in the state ωmax,cube\omega_{\text{max,cube}} satisfies: ⟨Jy⟩ωmax,cube24Varωmax,cube(Hy)⋅Varωmax,cube(Xy)=1CNava,y2 \frac{\langle J_y \rangle_{\omega_{\text{max,cube}}}^2}{4 \text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max,cube}}}(H_y) \cdot \text{Var}_{\omega_{\text{max,cube}}}(X_y)} = \frac{1}{C_{\text{Nava}, y}^2} where CNava,yC_{\text{Nava}, y} is the uncertainty constant associated with the open chain TyT_y.

theorem

The Mandelstam–Tamm ratio along the zz-axis of the cube equals 1/CNava21 / C_{\text{Nava}}^2

Let Tx,TyT_x, T_y, and TzT_z be three open tight-binding chains forming a 3D tight-binding cube. In the maximal current vector state ω\omega of the cube, the Mandelstam–Tamm ratio along the zz-axis—defined by the expectation value of the zz-axis current observable JzJ_z and the variances of the zz-axis Hamiltonian HzH_z and position operator XzX_z—is given by: ω⟨Jz⟩24⋅Varω(Hz)⋅Varω(Xz)=1CNava,z2\frac{\omega\langle J_z \rangle^2}{4 \cdot \text{Var}_{\omega}(H_z) \cdot \text{Var}_{\omega}(X_z)} = \frac{1}{C_{\text{Nava}, z}^2} where CNava,zC_{\text{Nava}, z} is the uncertainty constant CNavaC_{\text{Nava}} associated with the chain TzT_z.
