Independent spins as a state of a local net

Products of one-site probabilities give compatible local expectations and a global state.

i. Overview

Independent spins have the same one-site probability at every site. The probability of a configuration in a finite region is the product of its one-site probabilities. Summing over unobserved sites leaves the original distribution on the observed region, so these finite-volume states already form a state of the net. This construction applies to any finite spin space.

ii. Key results

  • `productProb`: the probability of a local configuration.
  • `productState`: expectation values in a finite region.
  • `productState_restrict`: taking a marginal preserves the product distribution.
  • `productNetState`: the compatible state of the infinite lattice.
  • `productGlobalState`: the corresponding state of the algebraic global system.

definition

Product probability ∏x∈Xp(c(x))\prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)) of a spin configuration cc on a finite region XX

For a finite set of sites XX and a configuration c:X→σc: X \to \sigma that assigns a spin state c(x)c(x) to each site x∈Xx \in X, the function calculates the joint probability of the configuration as the product of the individual site probabilities: ∏x∈Xp(c(x)) \prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)) where pp is the probability distribution for a single spin.

theorem

The product probability ∏x∈Xp(c(x))\prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)) is non-negative

Let pp be a probability distribution on the spin space σ\sigma (specifically, an element of the standard simplex). For any finite set of lattice sites XX and any spin configuration c:X→σc : X \to \sigma, the product probability of the configuration is non-negative: 0≤∏x∈Xp(c(x)) 0 \le \prod_{x \in X} p(c(x))

theorem

∑c:X→σ∏x∈Xp(c(x))=1\sum_{c: X \to \sigma} \prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)) = 1

Let SS be a set of sites and σ\sigma be a finite set of spin states. Let pp be a probability distribution on σ\sigma (i.e., pp is in the standard simplex). For any finite subset of sites X⊆SX \subseteq S, let c:X→σc: X \to \sigma be a configuration that assigns a spin state to each site in XX. The product probability of the configuration cc is defined as ∏x∈Xp(c(x))\prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)). Then, the sum of these product probabilities over all possible configurations cc is equal to 11: ∑c:X→σ∏x∈Xp(c(x))=1 \sum_{c: X \to \sigma} \prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)) = 1

definition

Product state on a finite region XX with probabilities ∏x∈Xp(c(x))\prod_{x \in X} p(c(x))

The finite-volume state for a system of independent spins on a finite set of sites X⊆SX \subseteq S with a one-site probability distribution pp on the spin space σ\sigma. This state is a linear functional on the space of classical observables ObsX\text{Obs}_X (the set of functions f:σX→Rf: \sigma^X \to \mathbb{R}) that assigns to each observable ff its expectation value: ∑c:X→σ(∏x∈Xp(c(x)))f(c) \sum_{c: X \to \sigma} \left( \prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)) \right) f(c) where cc is a configuration that assigns a spin state c(x)∈σc(x) \in \sigma to each site x∈Xx \in X.

theorem

Expectation Value Formula for the Product State on a Finite Region XX

Let SS be a lattice and σ\sigma be a finite set of spin states. Let pp be a probability distribution on σ\sigma (an element of the standard simplex). For any finite subset of sites X⊆SX \subseteq S and any classical observable f:σX→Rf: \sigma^X \to \mathbb{R}, the value of the product state (the expectation value) applied to ff is given by the sum over all configurations c:X→σc: X \to \sigma: productState(p,X)(f)=∑c:X→σ(∏x∈Xp(c(x)))f(c) \text{productState}(p, X)(f) = \sum_{c: X \to \sigma} \left( \prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)) \right) f(c) where ∏x∈Xp(c(x))\prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)) is the product probability of the configuration cc.

theorem

Factorization of the indicator I(d∣X=c)\mathbb{I}(d|_X = c) into site-wise indicators

Let SS be a lattice and σ\sigma be a set of spin states. Let XX and YY be finite subsets of SS such that X⊆YX \subseteq Y. For any spin configurations c:X→σc: X \to \sigma and d:Y→σd: Y \to \sigma, the indicator function for the condition that the restriction of dd to XX is equal to cc factors into constraints on individual sites: I(d∣X=c)=∏y∈Y{I(d(y)=c(y))if y∈X1if y∉X \mathbb{I}(d|_X = c) = \prod_{y \in Y} \begin{cases} \mathbb{I}(d(y) = c(y)) & \text{if } y \in X \\ 1 & \text{if } y \notin X \end{cases} where d∣Xd|_X denotes the restriction of dd to XX, and I(P)\mathbb{I}(P) is the indicator function which is 11 if the proposition PP is true and 00 otherwise.

theorem

Marginalization of Product Probabilities for Spin Configurations X⊆YX \subseteq Y

Let SS be a lattice and σ\sigma a set of spin states. Let pp be a probability distribution on σ\sigma. For any finite subsets of sites XX and YY such that X⊆YX \subseteq Y, and for any spin configuration c:X→σc: X \to \sigma, the sum of the product probabilities of configurations d:Y→σd: Y \to \sigma that restrict to cc on XX is equal to the product probability of cc on XX. Specifically, ∑d:Y→σ(∏y∈Yp(d(y)))⋅I(d∣X=c)=∏x∈Xp(c(x)) \sum_{d: Y \to \sigma} \left( \prod_{y \in Y} p(d(y)) \right) \cdot \mathbb{I}(d|_X = c) = \prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)) where d∣Xd|_X denotes the restriction of the configuration dd to the subregion XX, and I(d∣X=c)\mathbb{I}(d|_X = c) is the indicator function which is 11 if d∣X=cd|_X = c and 00 otherwise.

theorem

Consistency of product states under restriction: ωY∣X=ωX\omega_Y|_X = \omega_X

Let SS be a lattice and σ\sigma be a set of spin states. Given a probability distribution pp on σ\sigma, let ωZ\omega_Z denote the product state on a finite region Z⊆SZ \subseteq S, which is the state that assigns to any local observable f:σZ→Rf: \sigma^Z \to \mathbb{R} the expectation value ωZ(f)=∑c:Z→σ(∏z∈Zp(c(z)))f(c).\omega_Z(f) = \sum_{c: Z \to \sigma} \left( \prod_{z \in Z} p(c(z)) \right) f(c). For any finite subsets X,Y⊆SX, Y \subseteq S such that X⊆YX \subseteq Y, the restriction of the product state on YY to the subregion XX is equal to the product state on XX. That is, ωY∣X=ωX.\omega_Y|_X = \omega_X.

definition

Product net state of independent spins

The product state on the local net of observables (net Sσ)(\text{net } S \sigma) is a collection of compatible local states {ωX}\{\omega_X\} indexed by finite subsets X⊆SX \subseteq S. For a given one-site probability distribution pp on the spin space σ\sigma, each local state ωX\omega_X is defined as: ωX(f)=∑c:X→σ(∏x∈Xp(c(x)))f(c) \omega_X(f) = \sum_{c: X \to \sigma} \left( \prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)) \right) f(c) for any local observable f:σX→Rf: \sigma^X \to \mathbb{R}. These local states are compatible under restriction, meaning for any finite subsets X⊆Y⊆SX \subseteq Y \subseteq S, the restriction of the state ωY\omega_Y to the subregion XX is equal to ωX\omega_X.

definition

Product global state of independent spins

Let SS be a lattice and σ\sigma be a set of spin states. Given a one-site probability distribution pp on σ\sigma (an element of the standard simplex), the **product global state** is the state ω\omega on the global system of observables lim→⁡Obs(X)\varinjlim \text{Obs}(X) obtained from the compatible family of product local states. For any local observable f∈Obs(X)f \in \text{Obs}(X) on a finite region X⊆SX \subseteq S, the expectation value under this global state is given by: ω(ιXf)=∑c:X→σ(∏x∈Xp(c(x)))f(c) \omega(\iota_X f) = \sum_{c: X \to \sigma} \left( \prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)) \right) f(c) where ιX:Obs(X)→lim→⁡Obs(Y)\iota_X: \text{Obs}(X) \to \varinjlim \text{Obs}(Y) is the canonical inclusion of the local observable space into the global system.

theorem

Translation Invariance of Product Probabilities

Let SS be a lattice with a group GG acting on it, and let σ\sigma be the set of possible spin values. Let pp be a probability distribution on σ\sigma. For any finite subset of sites X⊆SX \subseteq S, any group element g∈Gg \in G, and any spin configuration c:g⋅X→σc: g \cdot X \to \sigma on the translated region, the product probability of cc on g⋅Xg \cdot X is equal to the product probability of its equivalent configuration on XX. That is, ∏y∈g⋅Xp(c(y))=∏x∈Xp(c(g⋅x)) \prod_{y \in g \cdot X} p(c(y)) = \prod_{x \in X} p(c(g \cdot x)) where the term on the right uses the equivalence mapping configurations on g⋅Xg \cdot X to configurations on XX via the group action.

theorem

The Product Net State is Invariant under Lattice Symmetries

Let SS be a lattice and σ\sigma be a set of spin states. Given a probability distribution pp on the spin space σ\sigma (an element of the standard simplex), the product net state ω\omega is the collection of compatible local states {ωX}\{\omega_X\} indexed by finite regions X⊆SX \subseteq S, where for any local observable f:σX→Rf: \sigma^X \to \mathbb{R}, the expectation value is defined by: ωX(f)=∑c:X→σ(∏x∈Xp(c(x)))f(c).\omega_X(f) = \sum_{c: X \to \sigma} \left( \prod_{x \in X} p(c(x)) \right) f(c). If a group GG acts on the lattice SS, then the product net state ω\omega is invariant under the induced symmetry action on the net of local observables. That is, for every group element g∈Gg \in G and every finite region X⊆SX \subseteq S, the local states satisfy: ωgX∘τg,X=ωX\omega_{gX} \circ \tau_{g,X} = \omega_X where τg,X\tau_{g,X} is the symmetry transformation mapping observables in region XX to those in the transformed region g⋅Xg \cdot X.
