Classical spins on a lattice

The local observables of a lattice of two-state spins, and their translation symmetry.

i. Overview

Place a classical two-state spin, up or down, on every site of a lattice `S`. The observables that can be measured inside a finite set of sites `X` are the real functions of the spins in `X`: the magnetization of a block, the product of two neighbouring spins, the energy of a bond. They are ordered pointwise, and the constant function `1` is the certain outcome. A function of the spins in `X` is also a function of the spins in any larger region `Y`: this is the inclusion `X ≤ Y`. Moving the sites by a symmetry of the lattice, for instance a translation, moves the observables along.

This is the kinematics on which the Ising model and its generalizations are defined: expectation values of local observables in a state of the infinite lattice are the correlation functions of the corresponding classical statistical mechanics. In this file:

* the net of local observables is built and shown to be faithful: a function of the spins in `X` is determined by its values as a function of the spins in a larger region, when a spin has a value at all; * the translations act on it, so the net is covariant; * the general theory then gives the observables of the infinite lattice, the translations acting on them, and the identification of homogeneous states of the infinite lattice with homogeneous families of local expectation values.

ii. Key results

- `net` : the real functions of the spins in each finite region. - `isFaithful` : a function of spins in a region stays distinguishable in a larger one. - `netAction` : the lattice symmetries move the local observables. - `isInvariant_stateEquiv_iff` : a state of the infinite lattice is homogeneous exactly when all its local expectation values are.

definition

Pullback channel along ϕ:α→β\phi: \alpha \to \beta mapping f↦f∘ϕf \mapsto f \circ \phi

For finite sets α\alpha and β\beta and a map ϕ:α→β\phi: \alpha \to \beta, `pullbackChan φ` is the unital positive linear map (representing a physical channel) from the space of observables on β\beta to the space of observables on α\alpha. It maps an observable f:β→Rf: \beta \to \mathbb{R} to its pullback along ϕ\phi, defined by the composition f∘ϕf \circ \phi.

theorem

Evaluation of the pullback channel: pullbackChan(ϕ)(f)(a)=f(ϕ(a))\text{pullbackChan}(\phi)(f)(a) = f(\phi(a))

Let α\alpha and β\beta be finite sets, and let ϕ:α→β\phi: \alpha \to \beta be a function. For any observable ff in the finite classical system over β\beta (modeled as a real-valued function) and any element a∈αa \in \alpha, the application of the pullback channel pullbackChan(ϕ)\text{pullbackChan}(\phi) to ff evaluated at aa is equal to f(ϕ(a))f(\phi(a)).

theorem

(pullbackChan ϕ)∘(pullbackChan ψ)=pullbackChan (ψ∘ϕ)(\text{pullbackChan } \phi) \circ (\text{pullbackChan } \psi) = \text{pullbackChan } (\psi \circ \phi)

Let α,β\alpha, \beta, and γ\gamma be finite sets. For any maps ϕ:α→β\phi: \alpha \to \beta and ψ:β→γ\psi: \beta \to \gamma, let pullbackChan ϕ\text{pullbackChan } \phi and pullbackChan ψ\text{pullbackChan } \psi denote the pullback channels (unital positive linear maps) that act on observables by pre-composition with ϕ\phi and ψ\psi respectively. The composition of these channels satisfies (pullbackChan ϕ)∘(pullbackChan ψ)=pullbackChan (ψ∘ϕ),(\text{pullbackChan } \phi) \circ (\text{pullbackChan } \psi) = \text{pullbackChan } (\psi \circ \phi), where the right-hand side is the pullback channel along the composite map ψ∘ϕ:α→γ\psi \circ \phi: \alpha \to \gamma.

abbrev

Space of classical observables on a finite region X⊆SX \subseteq S

Given a lattice SS and a set of possible spin states σ\sigma, the space of classical observables for a finite region X⊆SX \subseteq S is the set of real-valued functions f:σX→Rf: \sigma^X \to \mathbb{R} defined on the configuration space of that region. Here, σX\sigma^X denotes the set of all possible configurations c:X→σc: X \to \sigma that assign a spin state to each site in XX.

definition

Restriction of a spin configuration to a subregion X⊆YX \subseteq Y

Given two finite subsets XX and YY of a lattice SS such that X⊆YX \subseteq Y, and a spin configuration c:Y→σc: Y \to \sigma that assigns a state in σ\sigma to each site in YY, this function returns the restriction of the configuration cc to the subregion XX, denoted by c∣X:X→σc|_X: X \to \sigma.

definition

Net of local observables on a spin lattice SS

The net of local classical observables on a lattice SS with spin states σ\sigma is a structure that assigns to each finite subset of sites X⊆SX \subseteq S the space of observables Obs(X)={f:σX→R}\text{Obs}(X) = \{f: \sigma^X \to \mathbb{R}\}. For any inclusion of finite sets X⊆YX \subseteq Y, the net provides a map between the corresponding spaces of observables ιXY:Obs(X)→Obs(Y)\iota_{XY}: \text{Obs}(X) \to \text{Obs}(Y). This map is defined as the pullback along the restriction map resY→X:σY→σX\text{res}_{Y \to X}: \sigma^Y \to \sigma^X, such that for any observable f∈Obs(X)f \in \text{Obs}(X) and any configuration c∈σYc \in \sigma^Y, the value of the extended observable is (ιXYf)(c)=f(c∣X)(\iota_{XY} f)(c) = f(c|_X), where c∣Xc|_X denotes the restriction of the configuration cc to the subset XX.

theorem

The net of local observables on a spin lattice is faithful if σ\sigma is inhabited

Let SS be a lattice and σ\sigma be a set of spin states. If σ\sigma is inhabited (i.e., there exists at least one spin state), then the net of local observables on SS is faithful. This means that for any finite subsets X,Y⊆SX, Y \subseteq S such that X⊆YX \subseteq Y, the inclusion map ιXY:Obs(X)→Obs(Y)\iota_{XY} : \text{Obs}(X) \to \text{Obs}(Y) is an order embedding. Specifically, for any two observables f,g∈Obs(X)f, g \in \text{Obs}(X), the pointwise inequality f≤gf \le g holds if and only if their extensions to the larger region satisfy ιXY(f)≤ιXY(g)\iota_{XY}(f) \le \iota_{XY}(g).

definition

Equivalence between configurations on g⋅Xg \cdot X and XX

Let SS be a lattice and GG be a group acting on SS. For any finite set of sites X⊆SX \subseteq S and any group element g∈Gg \in G, let g⋅Xg \cdot X denote the image of XX under the action of gg. Let σ\sigma represent the set of possible spin values at each site. This definition establishes an equivalence (bijection) between the set of spin configurations on the translated region g⋅Xg \cdot X (functions from g⋅Xg \cdot X to σ\sigma) and the set of spin configurations on the original region XX (functions from XX to σ\sigma). Given a configuration c:g⋅X→σc: g \cdot X \to \sigma, the equivalence maps it to a configuration on XX by assigning to each x∈Xx \in X the value c(g⋅x)c(g \cdot x).

definition

Isomorphism τg:Obs(X)≅Obs(g⋅X)\tau_g: Obs(X) \cong Obs(g \cdot X) induced by the lattice symmetry gg

Given a lattice SS and a group GG acting on it, let σ\sigma be the set of spin values. For a finite region X⊆SX \subseteq S, let Obs(X)Obs(X) be the space of real-valued observables, which are functions from the configuration space σX\sigma^X to R\mathbb{R}. For any g∈Gg \in G, τg\tau_g is the isomorphism of order unit spaces between Obs(X)Obs(X) and Obs(g⋅X)Obs(g \cdot X) induced by the action of gg. For an observable f∈Obs(X)f \in Obs(X), its image τg(f)∈Obs(g⋅X)\tau_g(f) \in Obs(g \cdot X) is defined by (τgf)(c)=f(c∘g)(\tau_g f)(c) = f(c \circ g) for any configuration c:g⋅X→σc: g \cdot X \to \sigma, where c∘gc \circ g is the configuration on XX given by (c∘g)(x)=c(g⋅x)(c \circ g)(x) = c(g \cdot x).

theorem

Evaluation of the equality-induced isomorphism on observables

Let SS be a lattice and σ\sigma be a set of spin states. For any finite regions X,Y⊆SX, Y \subseteq S such that X=YX = Y, let e:X=Ye: X = Y be the proof of their equality. Let Obs(X)\text{Obs}(X) and Obs(Y)\text{Obs}(Y) be the spaces of real-valued observables (functions from the configuration spaces σX\sigma^X and σY\sigma^Y to R\mathbb{R}, respectively). The order-unit isomorphism eqIsoe:Obs(X)≅Obs(Y)\text{eqIso}_e: \text{Obs}(X) \cong \text{Obs}(Y) identifies an observable f∈Obs(X)f \in \text{Obs}(X) with an observable in Obs(Y)\text{Obs}(Y). For any configuration c:Y→σc: Y \to \sigma, the value of the identified observable is given by (eqIsoef)(c)=f(c∘idXY) (\text{eqIso}_e f)(c) = f(c \circ \text{id}_{XY}) where c∘idXYc \circ \text{id}_{XY} is the configuration on XX obtained by identifying the elements of XX and YY via the equality ee.

definition

Group action of GG on the net of local observables on SS

For a group GG acting on a lattice SS with spin states σ\sigma, the `netAction` is the covariant group action of GG on the net of local observables A\mathcal{A}. It assigns to each g∈Gg \in G a family of isomorphisms τg:Obs(X)≅Obs(g⋅X)\tau_g: \text{Obs}(X) \cong \text{Obs}(g \cdot X) for all finite regions X⊆SX \subseteq S. For an observable f∈Obs(X)f \in \text{Obs}(X), the action is defined by (τgf)(c)=f(c∘g)(\tau_g f)(c) = f(c \circ g) for any configuration c:g⋅X→σc: g \cdot X \to \sigma, where (c∘g)(x)=c(g⋅x)(c \circ g)(x) = c(g \cdot x). This action is compatible with the inclusion maps ιXY:Obs(X)→Obs(Y)\iota_{XY}: \text{Obs}(X) \to \text{Obs}(Y) of the net, satisfying τg∘ιXY=ιgX,gY∘τg\tau_g \circ \iota_{XY} = \iota_{gX, gY} \circ \tau_g, as well as the group action axioms τe=id\tau_e = \text{id} and τgh=τg∘τh\tau_{gh} = \tau_g \circ \tau_h.

theorem

Invariance of a Global State ω\omega Equals Invariance of its Local Net States {ωX}\{\omega_X\}

Let SS be a lattice with an inhabited set of spin states σ\sigma. Let A\mathcal{A} be the global system of observables, defined as the algebraic direct limit lim→⁡Obs(X)\varinjlim \text{Obs}(X) of the spaces of classical observables on finite regions X⊆SX \subseteq S. Suppose a group GG acts on the lattice, inducing a net action on the local observables and a corresponding group homomorphism β:G→Symmetry(A)\beta : G \to \text{Symmetry}(\mathcal{A}) on the global system. For any global state ω\omega on A\mathcal{A}, let {ωX}X⊆S\{\omega_X\}_{X \subseteq S} be the associated compatible family of local states. Then, the family of local states is invariant under the symmetry action of GG if and only if the global state ω\omega is invariant under the global symmetry action, meaning ω∘βg=ω\omega \circ \beta_g = \omega for all g∈Gg \in G.
