Equilibrium states of the Ising model
The Gibbs states of the classical and of the quantum Ising model in a finite region, and the states of the infinite lattice that arise from them in the thermodynamic limit.
i. Overview
A finite region `Y` of an Ising system in thermal equilibrium at inverse temperature `β` is in the *Gibbs state*, in which the configuration `c` of its spins has probability `exp (- β E_Y(c)) / Z_Y`. The expectation value of an observable depends on the model:
* in the classical Ising model an observable is a function `f` of the configuration and its expectation value is `∑ c, f c exp (- β E_Y(c)) / Z_Y`; * in the quantum Ising model an observable is a self-adjoint operator `M` on the spins, the Hamiltonian is diagonal in the `σᶻ` basis with the eigenvalue `E_Y(c)` on `c`, and the expectation value is `tr (exp (- β H_Y) M) / Z_Y = ∑ c, M (c, c) exp (- β E_Y(c)) / Z_Y`.
For a function `f` on configurations, which is a diagonal operator, the two expectation values agree: the classical model is the `σᶻ` sector of the quantum model.
The finite-volume Gibbs states are generally not compatible under restriction: boundary interactions change when the region grows. They nevertheless define a *thermodynamic limit* along a chosen ultrafilter containing the tails of the finite regions. Compactness gives limits of local expectations, and those limits are compatible, hence define a state of the net. This construction proves existence of a limit point. It does not prove uniqueness, convergence along all finite regions, translation invariance, or the occurrence of a phase transition.

Gibbs state of the quantum Ising model in region
For a quantum Ising model at inverse temperature , the Gibbs state in a finite region is a unital positive linear map on the algebra of observables (self-adjoint operators on the spin space). For an observable , its expectation value is given by the weighted sum over all spin configurations : where is the Gibbs probability of configuration defined by , and denotes the diagonal element of the operator in the basis. This corresponds to the quantum mechanical trace where the density matrix is diagonal in the configuration basis.
The expectation value of the quantum Gibbs state equals
For a finite region and a quantum observable (a self-adjoint operator on the spin space of ), the expectation value of in the Gibbs state at inverse temperature is equal to the sum over all spin configurations of the product of the Gibbs probability and the real part of the diagonal matrix element of corresponding to configuration :
Thermodynamic family of finite-volume Gibbs states
For an Ising model at inverse temperature on a lattice , the thermodynamic family is a collection of Gibbs states indexed by the set of finite regions . For each finite region , the associated state is the Gibbs state of the quantum Ising model. This family is equipped with an ultrafilter on that refines the filter of finite sets directed by inclusion (the "at top" filter), which is used to define the thermodynamic limit of local expectations as the regions exhaust the lattice.
Thermodynamic limit state of the quantum Ising model
For a quantum Ising model on a lattice at inverse temperature , the thermodynamic limit is a state of the infinite lattice (represented as a `NetState`). This state is constructed by taking the limit of the expectations of the thermodynamic family of finite-volume quantum Gibbs states along a chosen ultrafilter on the finite subsets . For any local observable , the expectation value in the thermodynamic limit state is given by where is the Gibbs state for the finite region .
Expectation Values Converge to the Thermodynamic Limit State:
For a quantum Ising model on a lattice at inverse temperature , let be a finite region and be a local observable associated with . Let denote the Gibbs state of the system in a finite region , and let denote the thermodynamic limit state constructed via an ultrafilter on the finite subsets of . The expectation value of the local observable in the finite-volume Gibbs states converges along to the expectation value of in the thermodynamic limit state: where is the expectation value of (embedded into the algebra of region ) when .
