Independent spins and the uniform Ising chain

Explicit classical models instantiate the spin net and its thermodynamic-limit construction.

i. Overview

Independent spins in a uniform field have an explicit product Gibbs distribution. Their local states are compatible before taking a limit. The uniform nearest-neighbor Ising chain has an interaction across region boundaries; its Gibbs states instead give a compatible limit point by the general compactness theorem. Both models use the same classical observable net.

ii. Key results

  • `independent`: spins in a uniform field with no pair interactions.
  • `independent_gibbs`: the finite-volume Gibbs state is a product state.
  • `independent_limit`: its thermodynamic limit is the explicit product net state.
  • `chain`: the uniform nearest-neighbor model on the integer lattice.
  • `chain_coupling_translate`: translation invariance of its interaction.
  • `chainGlobalState`: its thermodynamic limit as a state of the global system.

definition

Independent Ising model with uniform field hh

For a set of sites SS and a uniform magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R}, this definition constructs an Ising model on SS characterized by zero interaction between any two sites (i.e., the coupling constant Ji,j=0J_{i,j} = 0 for all i,j∈Si, j \in S) and a constant external field hh applied to every site.

definition

One-site Boltzmann weight exp⁡(βh⋅sgn(b))\exp(\beta h \cdot \text{sgn}(b))

Given an inverse temperature β∈R\beta \in \mathbb{R}, an external magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R}, and a spin state represented by a boolean bb, the function calculates the one-site Boltzmann weight defined as eβh⋅sgn(b)e^{\beta h \cdot \text{sgn}(b)}. Here, sgn(b)\text{sgn}(b) denotes the numerical spin value (typically +1+1 or −1-1) associated with the boolean state bb.

definition

One-site partition function Z(β,h)Z(\beta, h)

For a given inverse temperature β∈R\beta \in \mathbb{R} and external magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R}, the one-site partition function is defined as the sum of the one-site Boltzmann weights over all possible spin states b∈{true, false}b \in \{\text{true}, \text{false}\}. It is given by the formula: Zsite(β,h)=∑b∈{true, false}eβh⋅sgn(b) Z_{\text{site}}(\beta, h) = \sum_{b \in \{\text{true}, \text{false}\}} e^{\beta h \cdot \text{sgn}(b)} where sgn(b)\text{sgn}(b) is the numerical value assigned to the spin state bb.

theorem

The one-site partition function Zsite(β,h)>0Z_{\text{site}}(\beta, h) > 0

For any inverse temperature β∈R\beta \in \mathbb{R} and external magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R}, the one-site partition function Zsite(β,h)Z_{\text{site}}(\beta, h) is strictly positive: Zsite(β,h)>0 Z_{\text{site}}(\beta, h) > 0

definition

One-site spin probability P(b;β,h)P(b; \beta, h)

For a given inverse temperature β∈R\beta \in \mathbb{R}, an external magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R}, and a spin state b∈{true,false}b \in \{\text{true}, \text{false}\}, the function calculates the probability of a single independent spin being in state bb. This probability is defined as the ratio of the one-site Boltzmann weight to the one-site partition function: P(b;β,h)=eβh⋅sgn(b)Zsite(β,h) P(b; \beta, h) = \frac{e^{\beta h \cdot \text{sgn}(b)}}{Z_{\text{site}}(\beta, h)} where sgn(b)\text{sgn}(b) denotes the numerical spin value (typically +1+1 or −1-1) associated with the state bb, and Zsite(β,h)=∑b′∈{true,false}eβh⋅sgn(b′)Z_{\text{site}}(\beta, h) = \sum_{b' \in \{\text{true}, \text{false}\}} e^{\beta h \cdot \text{sgn}(b')} is the one-site partition function.

theorem

The one-site spin probability P(⋅;β,h)P(\cdot; \beta, h) belongs to the standard simplex

For any inverse temperature β∈R\beta \in \mathbb{R} and external magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R}, the one-site spin probability function P(⋅;β,h)P(\cdot; \beta, h) is an element of the standard simplex on the set of spin states {true,false}\{\text{true}, \text{false}\}. This means that for each b∈{true,false}b \in \{\text{true}, \text{false}\}, P(b;β,h)≥0P(b; \beta, h) \ge 0, and the sum of the probabilities over all possible states is ∑b∈{true,false}P(b;β,h)=1\sum_{b \in \{\text{true}, \text{false}\}} P(b; \beta, h) = 1.

theorem

The Boltzmann weight of the independent Ising model factors over sites

In an Ising model on a set of sites SS with uniform magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R} and no pair interactions, the Boltzmann weight for a configuration c:Y→Boolc: Y \to \text{Bool} on a finite subset of sites Y⊆SY \subseteq S at inverse temperature β\beta is the product of the individual site weights: weight(β,Y,c)=∏y∈Yeβh⋅sgn(c(y)) \text{weight}(\beta, Y, c) = \prod_{y \in Y} e^{\beta h \cdot \text{sgn}(c(y))} where sgn(c(y))\text{sgn}(c(y)) is the numerical spin value (+1+1 or −1-1) associated with the state at site yy.

theorem

The Partition Function of Independent Spins is a Product of One-Site Partition Functions

For an Ising model on a set of sites SS with a uniform magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R} and no interactions between sites, the partition function Z(β,Y)Z(\beta, Y) for any finite subset of sites Y⊆SY \subseteq S at inverse temperature β\beta is the product of the individual one-site partition functions Zsite(β,h)Z_{\text{site}}(\beta, h) for each site in YY: Z(β,Y)=∏y∈YZsite(β,h) Z(\beta, Y) = \prod_{y \in Y} Z_{\text{site}}(\beta, h) where the one-site partition function is defined as Zsite(β,h)=∑b∈{true,false}eβh⋅sgn(b)Z_{\text{site}}(\beta, h) = \sum_{b \in \{\text{true}, \text{false}\}} e^{\beta h \cdot \text{sgn}(b)}.

theorem

The Gibbs Probability of Independent Spins is a Product of One-Site Probabilities

Consider an Ising model on a set of sites SS with a uniform magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R} and no interactions between sites. For any finite subset of sites Y⊆SY \subseteq S, the Gibbs probability Pβ(c)P_\beta(c) of a spin configuration c:Y→{true, false}c: Y \to \{\text{true}, \text{false}\} at inverse temperature β\beta is equal to the product of the individual one-site probabilities: Pβ(c)=∏y∈YP(c(y);β,h) P_\beta(c) = \prod_{y \in Y} P(c(y); \beta, h) where P(b;β,h)P(b; \beta, h) is the probability of a single independent spin being in state b∈{true, false}b \in \{\text{true}, \text{false}\}.

theorem

The Gibbs State of Independent Spins is a Product State

In an Ising model on a set of sites SS with zero interaction between sites and a uniform external magnetic field hh, the classical Gibbs state ⟨⋅⟩Y,β\langle \cdot \rangle_{Y, \beta} for any finite region Y⊆SY \subseteq S at inverse temperature β\beta is equal to the product state formed by the independent one-site spin probability distributions P(⋅;β,h)P(\cdot; \beta, h).

theorem

The Thermodynamic Limit of the Independent Ising Model is a Product State

For an Ising model on a set of sites SS with a uniform magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R} and no interaction between sites, the thermodynamic limit state at inverse temperature β\beta is equal to the infinite-volume product net state. This product state is defined by the independent one-site spin probability distribution P(b;β,h)P(b; \beta, h), where for each site, the probability of being in spin state b∈{true, false}b \in \{\text{true}, \text{false}\} is given by P(b;β,h)=eβh⋅sgn(b)Zsite(β,h) P(b; \beta, h) = \frac{e^{\beta h \cdot \text{sgn}(b)}}{Z_{\text{site}}(\beta, h)} and Zsite(β,h)Z_{\text{site}}(\beta, h) is the single-site partition function.

definition

Uniform nearest-neighbor Ising chain on Z\mathbb{Z} with coupling JJ and field hh

For real numbers JJ and hh, this defines the uniform nearest-neighbor Ising model on the integer lattice Z\mathbb{Z}. The model is characterized by an interaction strength JijJ_{ij} between sites i,j∈Zi, j \in \mathbb{Z} that equals JJ if ∣i−j∣=1|i - j| = 1 and 00 otherwise, along with a constant external magnetic field hh applied at every site i∈Zi \in \mathbb{Z}.

theorem

Translation Invariance of Exchange Coupling in the Ising Chain

For a uniform nearest-neighbor Ising chain on the integer lattice Z\mathbb{Z} with coupling constant J∈RJ \in \mathbb{R} and external field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R}, the exchange coupling Ji,jJ_{i, j} between any two sites i,j∈Zi, j \in \mathbb{Z} is invariant under translation. Specifically, for any integer a∈Za \in \mathbb{Z}, it holds that Ja+i,a+j=Ji,jJ_{a+i, a+j} = J_{i, j}.

theorem

Interaction Jij=0J_{ij} = 0 for Non-Nearest Neighbors in the Ising Chain

For the uniform nearest-neighbor Ising model on the integer lattice Z\mathbb{Z} with coupling constant J∈RJ \in \mathbb{R} and magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R}, the pair interaction JijJ_{ij} between any two sites i,j∈Zi, j \in \mathbb{Z} is zero if they are not nearest neighbors, i.e., if j≠i−1j \neq i - 1 and j≠i+1j \neq i + 1.

definition

Thermodynamic limit state of the Ising chain on Z\mathbb{Z} with parameters J,h,βJ, h, \beta

For an exchange coupling J∈RJ \in \mathbb{R}, an external magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R}, and inverse temperature β∈R\beta \in \mathbb{R}, this defines the thermodynamic limit state of the uniform nearest-neighbor Ising chain on the integer lattice Z\mathbb{Z}. The state is a unital positive linear map ω:lim→⁡A(i)→R\omega: \varinjlim A(i) \to \mathbb{R} on the global system of local observables, constructed as the unique extension of the family of compatible local states obtained from the thermodynamic limit of finite-volume Gibbs states.

theorem

The global state of the Ising chain is equivalent to its thermodynamic limit net state

For the uniform nearest-neighbor Ising model on the integer lattice Z\mathbb{Z} with coupling constant J∈RJ \in \mathbb{R}, external magnetic field h∈Rh \in \mathbb{R}, and inverse temperature β∈R\beta \in \mathbb{R}, the global thermodynamic limit state corresponds exactly to the compatible family of local states obtained from the thermodynamic limit of finite-volume Gibbs states. Specifically, the image of the global state ω∈S(lim→⁡A(i))\omega \in \mathcal{S}(\varinjlim A(i)) under the canonical isomorphism stateEquiv\text{stateEquiv} is equal to the net state σ\sigma, where σ\sigma is the collection of local states defined by the thermodynamic limit of the classical Ising model.
