Basic results on self-adjoint elements

Mathlib provides several formulations of self-adjointness. This module relates `IsSelfAdjoint x`, `x ∈ selfAdjoint A`, and the two module structures on self-adjoint elements.

theorem

x∈selfAdjoint Rx \in \text{selfAdjoint } R if and only if xx is self-adjoint

Let RR be an additive group with a star-additive monoid structure. For any element x∈Rx \in R, xx belongs to the set of self-adjoint elements selfAdjoint R\text{selfAdjoint } R if and only if xx is self-adjoint (satisfies the predicate `IsSelfAdjoint x`).

theorem

x∈submodule RA  ⟺  x∈selfAdjoint Ax \in \text{submodule } R A \iff x \in \text{selfAdjoint } A

Let AA be a star-algebra over a commutative ring RR. For any element x∈Ax \in A, xx belongs to the RR-submodule of self-adjoint elements if and only if xx is a self-adjoint element of AA (i.e., x∈selfAdjoint Ax \in \text{selfAdjoint } A).

definition

RR-linear equivalence between the submodule and the set of self-adjoint elements

Given a star-algebra AA and a commutative ring RR, let selfAdjoint A={x∈A∣x∗=x}\text{selfAdjoint } A = \{x \in A \mid x^* = x\} denote the set of self-adjoint elements. This definition provides the RR-linear equivalence (isomorphism of RR-modules) between the RR-submodule structure of self-adjoint elements and the collection of self-adjoint elements viewed as a basic additive group. The map identifies an element xx in the submodule with itself in the set of self-adjoint elements.

definition

Positive linear map submodule RA→selfAdjoint A\text{submodule } R A \to \text{selfAdjoint } A

Let AA be a star-algebra over a commutative ring RR. The map submodulePLM:submodule RA→selfAdjoint A\text{submodulePLM} : \text{submodule } R A \to \text{selfAdjoint } A is a positive linear map from the RR-submodule of self-adjoint elements of AA to the type of self-adjoint elements. It identifies an element xx in the submodule with itself in the set of self-adjoint elements selfAdjoint A={x∈A∣x∗=x}\text{selfAdjoint } A = \{x \in A \mid x^* = x\}, preserving the RR-linear structure and the property of monotonicity.

definition

Positive linear inverse of the self-adjoint submodule map

Given a star-algebra AA over a commutative ring RR, this map is the inverse of the positive linear map `submodulePLM`. It identifies a self-adjoint element x∈selfAdjoint Ax \in \text{selfAdjoint } A with its corresponding element in the RR-submodule of self-adjoint elements. The map is constructed from the inverse of the RR-linear equivalence `submoduleEquiv` and is shown to be monotone (order-preserving).

instance

Identity element 11 of the self-adjoint submodule

Let AA be an algebra over a ring RR equipped with an involution. The identity element 11 of the algebra AA is a self-adjoint element. This definition provides the multiplicative identity instance for the RR-submodule of self-adjoint elements in AA, where the identity 11 of the submodule corresponds to the identity 11 of the underlying algebra.

theorem

The identity 11 of the self-adjoint submodule equals 11 in AA

Let AA be an algebra over a ring RR equipped with an involution. The identity element 11 of the RR-submodule of self-adjoint elements, when viewed as an element of the algebra AA, is equal to the identity element 11 of the algebra AA.

theorem

submoduleEquiv(1)=1\text{submoduleEquiv}(1) = 1

Let AA be a star-algebra over a commutative ring RR. Let submoduleEquiv\text{submoduleEquiv} be the RR-linear equivalence between the RR-submodule of self-adjoint elements and the type of self-adjoint elements in AA. The image of the identity element 11 of the submodule under this equivalence is equal to the identity element 11 of the algebra AA.

theorem

The inverse linear equivalence ϕ−1\phi^{-1} for self-adjoint elements maps 11 to 11

Let RR be a commutative ring and AA a star-algebra. Let ϕ:selfAdjoint.submodule R A≃RselfAdjoint A\phi: \text{selfAdjoint.submodule } R \ A \simeq_R \text{selfAdjoint } A be the RR-linear equivalence between the RR-submodule of self-adjoint elements and the type of self-adjoint elements. Then, the image of the identity element 1∈selfAdjoint A1 \in \text{selfAdjoint } A under the inverse equivalence ϕ−1\phi^{-1}, when viewed as an element of the algebra AA, is equal to 11.

definition

Unital positive linear map submodule R A→selfAdjoint A\text{submodule } R \ A \to \text{selfAdjoint } A

Let AA be a star-algebra over a ring RR. This definition is the RR-linear isomorphism between the RR-submodule of self-adjoint elements in AA and the type selfAdjoint A\text{selfAdjoint } A of self-adjoint elements, considered as a unital positive linear map. It maps the identity element 11 to 11 and is monotone with respect to the partial order on self-adjoint elements.

definition

Unital positive linear map from selfAdjoint A\text{selfAdjoint } A to its submodule representation

Let AA be a star-algebra over a commutative ring RR. The function `submoduleUPLMSymm` is the unital positive RR-linear map from the set of self-adjoint elements selfAdjoint A={x∈A∣x∗=x}\text{selfAdjoint } A = \{x \in A \mid x^* = x\} to the RR-submodule of self-adjoint elements submodule R A\text{submodule } R \ A. It is defined as the inverse of the map `submoduleUPLM`. As a unital positive linear map, it preserves the identity element 11 and is monotone (positive) with respect to the natural ordering of self-adjoint elements.

definition

Unital positive linear map selfAdjoint(C)→R\text{selfAdjoint}(\mathbb{C}) \to \mathbb{R}

The unital positive R\mathbb{R}-linear map from the subspace of self-adjoint complex numbers selfAdjoint(C)={z∈C∣zˉ=z}\text{selfAdjoint}(\mathbb{C}) = \{z \in \mathbb{C} \mid \bar{z} = z\} to the real numbers R\mathbb{R}. This map identifies each self-adjoint complex number with its corresponding real value.
