Extending finite weights

i. Overview

A finite weight on the positive cone of an order-unit space extends uniquely to a positive linear functional on the whole space. Normalized weights therefore give states as a specialization.

The extension shifts and undoes: since `1` is an order unit, any `x : E` becomes nonnegative after adding enough copies of `1` (`exists_real_shift_nonneg` gives `r` with `r • 1 + x ≥ 0`), so define `toFun x := w (r • 1 + x) - r * w 1` — undo the shift after reading `w` on the cone and check it's independent of the `r` chosen.

theorem

Existence of a real shift into the positive cone

Let EE be an order-unit space with order unit 11. For every element x∈Ex \in E, there exists a real number rr such that r⋅1+x≥0r \cdot 1 + x \ge 0.

theorem

Finite weights are additive on the positive cone (PosCone(E)\text{PosCone}(E))

Let EE be an order-unit space and ww be a weight on EE. If ww is finite, then for any elements cc and dd in the positive cone PosCone(E)\text{PosCone}(E), the weight of their sum is the sum of their individual weights: (w(c+d)).toReal=(w(c)).toReal+(w(d)).toReal(w(c + d)).\text{toReal} = (w(c)).\text{toReal} + (w(d)).\text{toReal} where x.toRealx.\text{toReal} denotes the conversion of the weight value from the extended non-negative real numbers (ENNReal\text{ENNReal}) to the real numbers (R\mathbb{R}).

theorem

R≥0\mathbb{R}_{\ge 0}-homogeneity of the real-valued evaluation of a weight: toReal(w(k⋅c))=k⋅toReal(w(c))\text{toReal}(w(k \cdot c)) = k \cdot \text{toReal}(w(c))

Let EE be an order-unit space and let PosCone(E)={x∈E∣0≤x}\text{PosCone}(E) = \{x \in E \mid 0 \le x\} be its positive cone. For any weight ww on EE, any non-negative real scalar k∈R≥0k \in \mathbb{R}_{\ge 0}, and any element cc in the positive cone PosCone(E)\text{PosCone}(E), the real-valued evaluation of the weight on the scaled element k⋅ck \cdot c is equal to kk times the real-valued evaluation of the weight on cc. That is, toReal(w(k⋅c))=k⋅toReal(w(c)) \text{toReal}(w(k \cdot c)) = k \cdot \text{toReal}(w(c)) where toReal\text{toReal} represents the conversion of the weight's value from the extended non-negative real numbers [0,∞][0, \infty] to the real numbers R\mathbb{R}.

definition

Value of weight ww at xx shifted by r⋅1r \cdot 1

Let EE be an order-unit space with order unit 11, and let ww be a finite weight defined on the positive cone PosCone(E)\text{PosCone}(E). For any element x∈Ex \in E and any real scalar rr such that r⋅1+x≥0r \cdot 1 + x \ge 0, the value is defined as the real number: w(r⋅1+x)−r⋅w(1) w(r \cdot 1 + x) - r \cdot w(1) where w(1)w(1) is the weight of the order unit. This construction calculates the value of the weight on an arbitrary element xx by shifting it into the positive cone and subtracting the weight associated with the shift.

theorem

Shift-independence of the raw value of a finite weight for r≤sr \leq s

Let EE be an order-unit space with order unit 11, and let ww be a finite weight on the positive cone of EE. For any element x∈Ex \in E and real numbers rr and ss such that r≤sr \leq s, if the shifted elements r⋅1+xr \cdot 1 + x and s⋅1+xs \cdot 1 + x both belong to the positive cone (i.e., r⋅1+x≥0r \cdot 1 + x \geq 0 and s⋅1+x≥0s \cdot 1 + x \geq 0), then the raw value of the weight at xx is independent of the choice between rr and ss. That is, w(s⋅1+x)−s⋅w(1)=w(r⋅1+x)−r⋅w(1) w(s \cdot 1 + x) - s \cdot w(1) = w(r \cdot 1 + x) - r \cdot w(1) where w(1)w(1) is the weight of the order unit.

theorem

Shift Independence of the Extended Value of a Finite Weight

Let EE be an order-unit space with order unit 11, and let ww be a finite weight on the positive cone of EE. For any element x∈Ex \in E and any real numbers rr and ss such that r⋅1+x≥0r \cdot 1 + x \ge 0 and s⋅1+x≥0s \cdot 1 + x \ge 0, the value obtained by shifting xx into the positive cone is independent of the choice of shift: w(r⋅1+x)−r⋅w(1)=w(s⋅1+x)−s⋅w(1) w(r \cdot 1 + x) - r \cdot w(1) = w(s \cdot 1 + x) - s \cdot w(1)

definition

Extension of a finite weight to the whole space EE

Let EE be an order-unit space with order unit 11, and let ww be a finite weight defined on its positive cone. The function maps an element x∈Ex \in E to a real value by extending the weight ww from the positive cone to the entire space. For any x∈Ex \in E, the value is given by: x↦w(r⋅1+x)−r⋅w(1) x \mapsto w(r \cdot 1 + x) - r \cdot w(1) where r∈Rr \in \mathbb{R} is any real number such that r⋅1+x≥0r \cdot 1 + x \geq 0. This value is independent of the choice of rr.

theorem

The extension of a finite weight equals its shifted value for any valid shift rr

Let EE be an order-unit space with order unit 11, and let ww be a finite weight on its positive cone. For any element x∈Ex \in E and any real scalar rr such that r⋅1+x≥0r \cdot 1 + x \ge 0, the extension of the weight to the whole space, denoted by `toFun`, is equal to the shifted value: toFun(x)=w(r⋅1+x)−r⋅w(1) \text{toFun}(x) = w(r \cdot 1 + x) - r \cdot w(1) where w(1)w(1) is the weight of the order unit.

theorem

W(x)=w(x)W(x) = w(x) for x∈PosCone(E)x \in \text{PosCone}(E)

Let EE be an order-unit space and ww be a finite weight on its positive cone PosCone(E)\text{PosCone}(E). Let W:E→RW: E \to \mathbb{R} be the extension of ww to the whole space EE (defined by W(x)=w(r⋅1+x)−r⋅w(1)W(x) = w(r \cdot 1 + x) - r \cdot w(1) for a sufficiently large rr). For any non-negative element x∈PosCone(E)x \in \text{PosCone}(E), the value of the extension W(x)W(x) is equal to the real value of the weight w(x)w(x).

theorem

The extension of a finite weight maps 00 to 00

Let EE be an order-unit space and let ww be a finite weight defined on its positive cone. If W:E→RW: E \to \mathbb{R} is the linear extension of ww to the whole space EE (defined by W(x)=w(r⋅1+x)−r⋅w(1)W(x) = w(r \cdot 1 + x) - r \cdot w(1) for a sufficiently large rr), then the value of WW at the zero element of EE is 00, i.e., W(0)=0W(0) = 0.

theorem

The extension of a finite weight is additive: W(x+y)=W(x)+W(y)W(x + y) = W(x) + W(y)

Let EE be an order-unit space and ww be a finite weight defined on its positive cone. Let W:E→RW: E \to \mathbb{R} be the extension of ww to the entire space EE, defined by W(x)=w(r⋅1+x)−r⋅w(1)W(x) = w(r \cdot 1 + x) - r \cdot w(1) for any r∈Rr \in \mathbb{R} such that r⋅1+x≥0r \cdot 1 + x \geq 0. For any x,y∈Ex, y \in E, the extension WW satisfies W(x+y)=W(x)+W(y)W(x + y) = W(x) + W(y).

theorem

The extension of a finite weight satisfies f(−x)=−f(x)f(-x) = -f(x)

Let EE be an order-unit space and ww be a finite weight on its positive cone. Let f:E→Rf: E \to \mathbb{R} be the extension of ww to the entire space EE, defined by f(x)=w(r⋅1+x)−r⋅w(1)f(x) = w(r \cdot 1 + x) - r \cdot w(1) for any r∈Rr \in \mathbb{R} such that r⋅1+x≥0r \cdot 1 + x \ge 0. For any x∈Ex \in E, the extension satisfies f(−x)=−f(x)f(-x) = -f(x).

theorem

The extension of a finite weight is non-negatively homogeneous (w~(t⋅x)=t⋅w~(x)\tilde{w}(t \cdot x) = t \cdot \tilde{w}(x) for t≥0t \ge 0)

Let EE be an order-unit space and ww be a finite weight defined on its positive cone. Let w~:E→R\tilde{w} : E \to \mathbb{R} be the unique extension of ww to the whole space EE. For any x∈Ex \in E and any non-negative real number t≥0t \ge 0, the extension satisfies w~(t⋅x)=t⋅w~(x)\tilde{w}(t \cdot x) = t \cdot \tilde{w}(x).

theorem

Real Homogeneity of the Finite Weight Extension: w~(t⋅x)=tw~(x)\tilde{w}(t \cdot x) = t \tilde{w}(x)

Let EE be an order-unit space and ww be a finite weight defined on its positive cone. Let w~:E→R\tilde{w} : E \to \mathbb{R} be the unique extension of ww to the whole space EE. For any real number t∈Rt \in \mathbb{R} and any element x∈Ex \in E, the extension satisfies the property of real homogeneity: w~(t⋅x)=tw~(x) \tilde{w}(t \cdot x) = t \tilde{w}(x)

definition

Linear map extension of a finite weight w~:E→R\tilde{w}: E \to \mathbb{R}

Let EE be an order-unit space and ww be a finite weight on its positive cone. The R\mathbb{R}-linear map w~:E→R\tilde{w}: E \to \mathbb{R} is the extension of ww to the entire space EE. For any x∈Ex \in E, its value is given by w~(x)=w(r⋅1+x)−r⋅w(1) \tilde{w}(x) = w(r \cdot 1 + x) - r \cdot w(1) where 11 is the order unit and r∈Rr \in \mathbb{R} is any real number such that r⋅1+x≥0r \cdot 1 + x \ge 0.

theorem

Pointwise Value of the Linear Extension of a Finite Weight w~(x)\tilde{w}(x)

Let EE be an order-unit space with order unit 11 and let ww be a finite weight on its positive cone. The R\mathbb{R}-linear map extension w~:E→R\tilde{w}: E \to \mathbb{R} evaluates at any x∈Ex \in E to the same value as the extension function, namely: w~(x)=w(r⋅1+x)−r⋅w(1) \tilde{w}(x) = w(r \cdot 1 + x) - r \cdot w(1) where r∈Rr \in \mathbb{R} is any real number such that r⋅1+x≥0r \cdot 1 + x \ge 0.

definition

Positive linear functional extension of a finite weight ww

Let EE be an order-unit space and ww be a finite weight on its positive cone. The positive linear functional w~:E→R\tilde{w}: E \to \mathbb{R} is the extension of ww to the entire space EE. This map is R\mathbb{R}-linear and satisfies the positivity condition, meaning that for any x∈Ex \in E such that x≥0x \ge 0, the value w~(x)\tilde{w}(x) is a non-negative real number.

theorem

The Positive Linear Extension of a Finite Weight Agrees with the Original Weight on the Positive Cone

Let EE be an order-unit space and ww be a finite weight on its positive cone PosCone(E)={x∈E∣0≤x}\text{PosCone}(E) = \{x \in E \mid 0 \le x\}. Let w~:E→R\tilde{w} : E \to \mathbb{R} be the positive linear functional extension of ww. For any x∈PosCone(E)x \in \text{PosCone}(E), the value of the extension w~(x)\tilde{w}(x) is equal to the value of the original weight w(x)w(x) (interpreted as a real number).

theorem

Uniqueness of the positive linear extension of a finite weight ww

Let EE be an order-unit space and ww be a finite weight on the positive cone PosCone(E)={x∈E∣0≤x}\text{PosCone}(E) = \{x \in E \mid 0 \le x\}. Let w~:E→R\tilde{w} : E \to \mathbb{R} be the unique positive linear extension of ww to the whole space EE. If f:E→Rf : E \to \mathbb{R} is any positive linear functional such that for every x∈PosCone(E)x \in \text{PosCone}(E), the value f(x)f(x) equals the real value of w(x)w(x), then f=w~f = \tilde{w}.
