States

i. Overview

A state is a normalized positive linear functional: an element of `𝓟[𝕜, A]`, the positive linear functionals on `A`, that sends the unit to `1`. `𝓢[𝕜, A]` is just `A →ₚ₁[𝕜] 𝕜` — the state space is a special case of the channel type, with the target system the base field itself.

ii. Key definitions

  • `𝓟[𝕜, A]` is the type of positive linear functionals on an ordered `𝕜`-vector space.
  • `𝓢[𝕜, A]` is the state space of an ordered `𝕜`-vector space with unit.

definition

Positive linear functionals P[k,A]\mathcal{P}[\mathbb{k}, A]

For a field k\mathbb{k} and an ordered k\mathbb{k}-vector space AA, the notation P[k,A]\mathcal{P}[\mathbb{k}, A] denotes the set of positive linear functionals from AA to its base field k\mathbb{k}.

definition

Positive linear functionals on AA over C\mathbb{C} (P[A]\mathcal{P}[A])

For an ordered complex vector space AA, let P[A]\mathcal{P}[A] denote the set of all positive linear functionals from AA to the complex numbers C\mathbb{C}. A linear functional f:A→Cf: A \to \mathbb{C} is positive if it maps the positive cone of AA to the non-negative real numbers [0,∞)⊂C[0, \infty) \subset \mathbb{C}.

definition

State space S[k,A]\mathcal{S}[\mathbb{k}, A] of an ordered vector space with unit

The notation S[k,A]\mathcal{S}[\mathbb{k}, A] denotes the state space of an ordered k\mathbb{k}-vector space AA that possesses a unit element. A state in this space is a normalized positive linear functional f:A→kf: A \to \mathbb{k}. Specifically, ff is a state if it is linear, maps positive elements of AA to non-negative values in k\mathbb{k}, and maps the unit element of AA to 11.

definition

State space S[A]\mathcal{S}[A] of an ordered complex vector space AA

For an ordered complex vector space AA with a unit, the notation S[A]\mathcal{S}[A] denotes its state space, which is the set of all normalized positive linear functionals ω:A→C\omega: A \to \mathbb{C}. These are linear maps that send positive elements of AA to non-negative real numbers and the unit element of AA to 11.

definition

Probability of an effect ee in state ω\omega

For an ordered real vector space EE with a unit element 11, let S[R,E]\mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E] be the state space consisting of normalized positive linear functionals ω:E→R\omega: E \to \mathbb{R} such that ω(1)=1\omega(1) = 1. Given a state ω\omega and an effect e∈Ee \in E (where 0≤e≤10 \leq e \leq 1), this function returns the value ω(e)\omega(e) as an element of the unit interval [0,1][0, 1]. In physical terms, this represents the probability that the effect ee occurs when the system is in state ω\omega.

theorem

The value of a state on an effect as a real number is ω(e)\omega(e)

Let EE be an ordered real vector space with a unit element 11. For any state ω∈S[R,E]\omega \in \mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E] and any effect e∈Ee \in E (an element such that 0≤e≤10 \le e \le 1), the value of ω\omega evaluated on ee as an element of the unit interval [0,1][0, 1] is equal to the real number ω(e)\omega(e).

theorem

ω(1−e)=1−ω(e)\omega(1 - e) = 1 - \omega(e) for States and Effects

Let EE be an ordered real vector space with a unit element 11. For any state ω∈S[R,E]\omega \in \mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E] (a normalized positive linear functional such that ω(1)=1\omega(1) = 1) and any effect e∈Ee \in E (an element satisfying 0≤e≤10 \le e \le 1), the probability assigned to the complement effect 1−e1 - e is the complement of the probability assigned to ee within the unit interval [0,1][0, 1]. Mathematically, this is expressed as: ω(1−e)=1−ω(e)\omega(1 - e) = 1 - \omega(e)

theorem

ω(e+f)=ω(e)+ω(f)\omega(e + f) = \omega(e) + \omega(f) for Orthogonal Effects

Let EE be an ordered real vector space with a unit element 11. Let S[R,E]\mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E] be the state space consisting of normalized positive linear functionals ω:E→R\omega: E \to \mathbb{R} such that ω(1)=1\omega(1) = 1. For any state ω∈S[R,E]\omega \in \mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E] and any two orthogonal effects e,f∈Ee, f \in E (elements where 0≤e,f≤10 \le e, f \le 1 and their sum is also an effect), the probability of the sum of the effects is the sum of the individual probabilities: ω(e+f)=ω(e)+ω(f)\omega(e + f) = \omega(e) + \omega(f)

theorem

ω=ϕ\omega = \phi if ω(e)=ϕ(e)\omega(e) = \phi(e) for all effects ee

Let EE be an ordered real vector space with unit element 11. Let S[R,E]\mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E] denote the state space of EE, consisting of normalized positive linear functionals ω:E→R\omega : E \to \mathbb{R} such that ω(1)=1\omega(1) = 1. For any two states ω,ϕ∈S[R,E]\omega, \phi \in \mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E], if ω(e)=ϕ(e)\omega(e) = \phi(e) for every effect e∈Ee \in E (where an effect is an element satisfying 0≤e≤10 \le e \le 1), then ω=ϕ\omega = \phi.

definition

Schrödinger-picture action of φ\varphi on state ω\omega (Pullback state ω∘φ\omega \circ \varphi)

Given a unital positive linear map φ:E1→E2\varphi : E_1 \to E_2 and a state ω∈S[R,E2]\omega \in \mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E_2], the pullback state is the state in S[R,E1]\mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E_1] defined by the composition ω∘φ\omega \circ \varphi. In the context of quantum mechanics, this represents the Schrödinger-picture action of a Heisenberg-picture channel φ\varphi on the state ω\omega, such that for any x∈E1x \in E_1, the resulting state maps xx to ω(φ(x))\omega(\varphi(x)).

theorem

(φ.pullbackState ω)(x)=ω(φ(x))(\varphi.\text{pullbackState } \omega)(x) = \omega(\varphi(x))

Let E1E_1 and E2E_2 be ordered real vector spaces with units. For any unital positive linear map φ:E1→E2\varphi : E_1 \to E_2, any state ω∈S[R,E2]\omega \in \mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E_2], and any element x∈E1x \in E_1, the value of the pullback state φ.pullbackState ω\varphi.\text{pullbackState } \omega acting on xx is given by the application of ω\omega to φ(x)\varphi(x): (φ.pullbackState ω)(x)=ω(φ(x)) (\varphi.\text{pullbackState } \omega)(x) = \omega(\varphi(x)) This represents the Schrödinger-picture action of a Heisenberg-picture channel φ\varphi on the state ω\omega.

theorem

The pullback of a state along the identity map is the state itself

Let E1E_1 be a unital ordered vector space over R\mathbb{R}, and let S[R,E1]\mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E_1] denote its state space. For any state ω∈S[R,E1]\omega \in \mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E_1], the pullback of ω\omega along the identity unital positive linear map idE1:E1→E1\text{id}_{E_1} : E_1 \to E_1 is equal to ω\omega itself.

theorem

Pullback state of a composition (ψ∘φ)∗ω=φ∗(ψ∗ω)(\psi \circ \varphi)^* \omega = \varphi^* (\psi^* \omega)

Let E1E_1, E2E_2, and E3E_3 be ordered real vector spaces. Let φ:E1→E2\varphi : E_1 \to E_2 and ψ:E2→E3\psi : E_2 \to E_3 be unital positive linear maps, and let ω∈S[R,E3]\omega \in \mathcal{S}[\mathbb{R}, E_3] be a state on E3E_3. The pullback of the state ω\omega under the composition ψ∘φ\psi \circ \varphi is equal to the pullback of the state ψ∗ω\psi^* \omega under the map φ\varphi. That is, (ψ∘φ)∗ω=φ∗(ψ∗ω) (\psi \circ \varphi)^* \omega = \varphi^* (\psi^* \omega) where (⋅)∗(\cdot)^* denotes the pullback operation (the Schrödinger-picture action).
