Probability laws of effect-valued measurements

A real-valued effect measure is exactly a probability measure: its values lie in `[0, 1]`, and its order-theoretic countable additivity becomes `ENNReal` countable additivity after applying `ENNReal.ofReal`. Consequently, scalarizing a POVM by a normal state produces an ordinary probability law.

definition

Measure associated with a real-valued effect measure ν\nu

Let Ω\Omega be a measurable space and ν\nu be an effect-valued measure on Ω\Omega taking values in the effects of R\mathbb{R} (the interval [0,1]⊂R[0, 1] \subset \mathbb{R}). This definition constructs a standard measure μ\mu on Ω\Omega such that for every measurable set s⊆Ωs \subseteq \Omega, the measure is given by μ(s)=ν(s)\mu(s) = \nu(s), where the value is treated as an extended non-negative real number (ENNReal\text{ENNReal}).

theorem

Value of the measure associated with an effect-valued measure ν\nu at ss

Let Ω\Omega be a measurable space and let ν\nu be an effect-valued measure on Ω\Omega taking values in the real interval [0,1]⊂R[0, 1] \subset \mathbb{R}. For any measurable set s⊆Ωs \subseteq \Omega, the measure ν.toMeasure\nu.\text{toMeasure} (the standard measure associated with ν\nu) evaluated at ss is equal to the value of ν(s)\nu(s) converted to an extended non-negative real number, written as ν.toMeasure(s)=ENNReal.ofReal(ν(s))\nu.\text{toMeasure}(s) = \text{ENNReal.ofReal}(\nu(s)).

instance

The measure associated with a real-valued effect-valued measure is a probability measure

Let Ω\Omega be a measurable space and ν\nu be a real-valued effect-valued measure on Ω\Omega. Then the standard measure μ\mu associated with ν\nu (denoted as `ν.toMeasure`) is a probability measure, which implies its total mass is one (μ(Ω)=1\mu(\Omega) = 1).

definition

Probability measure associated with a real-valued effect measure ν\nu

Let Ω\Omega be a measurable space and ν\nu be an effect-valued measure on Ω\Omega taking values in the interval [0,1]⊂R[0, 1] \subset \mathbb{R}. This definition constructs an ordinary probability measure on Ω\Omega such that for every measurable set s⊆Ωs \subseteq \Omega, the measure of ss is equal to the real value ν(s)\nu(s).

definition

Probability law of an effect-valued measure μ\mu in a normal state ω\omega

Let Ω\Omega be a measurable space and CC be an ordered vector space. Given an effect-valued measure μ\mu on Ω\Omega with values in CC and a normal state ω:C→R\omega: C \to \mathbb{R} (a normal unital positive linear map), the **probability law** is the probability measure on Ω\Omega defined by: s↦ω(μ(s)) s \mapsto \omega(\mu(s)) for every measurable set s⊆Ωs \subseteq \Omega. This represents the probability distribution obtained by measuring the observable μ\mu while the system is in the state ω\omega.

theorem

The value of the probability law (μ.probabilityLaw ω)(s)(\mu.\text{probabilityLaw} \ \omega)(s) is ω(μ(s))\omega(\mu(s))

Let Ω\Omega be a measurable space and CC be an ordered vector space. Let μ\mu be an effect-valued measure on Ω\Omega with values in CC, and let ω:C→R\omega: C \to \mathbb{R} be a normal state (a normal unital positive linear map). For any measurable set s⊆Ωs \subseteq \Omega, the probability measure defined by the probability law of μ\mu in the state ω\omega evaluates on ss as: (μ.probabilityLaw(ω))(s)=ω(μ(s)) (\mu.\text{probabilityLaw}(\omega))(s) = \omega(\mu(s))
