Positive quadratic representations

The quadratic representation `U a` is the intrinsic Jordan version of the self-adjoint one-Kraus operation `b ↦ aba`. Its preservation of the positive cone is the precise operational fact used by compression and conditioning. It is intentionally a separate capability: square positivity alone does not prove it for an arbitrary supplied cone, and the intrinsic JB theorem which discharges this capability belongs to the later spectral development.

Concrete realizations and, eventually, genuine JB theory provide this class. Physics-facing results should require it directly rather than importing a proof through a special associative realization.

theorem

0≤b  ⟹  0≤Uab0 \le b \implies 0 \le U_a b

In a Jordan algebra EE, for any elements a,b∈Ea, b \in E, if bb is nonnegative (0≤b0 \le b), then its image under the quadratic representation UaU_a, denoted Ua(b)U_a(b), is also nonnegative (0≤Ua(b)0 \le U_a(b)).

definition

Quadratic representation UaU_a as a positive linear map

For an element aa in a Jordan algebra EE, the quadratic representation UaU_a is the positive linear map from EE to EE defined by the formula Ua(b)=2a∘(a∘b)−(a∘a)∘bU_a(b) = 2 a \circ (a \circ b) - (a \circ a) \circ b, where ∘\circ denotes the Jordan product. This map is bundled with the property that it preserves the positive cone, meaning that for any b∈Eb \in E, if b≥0b \ge 0, then Ua(b)≥0U_a(b) \ge 0.

theorem

The underlying linear map of `quadRepPositiveLinearMap a` is UaU_a

For any element aa in a Jordan algebra EE, the underlying R\mathbb{R}-linear map of the positive linear map `quadRepPositiveLinearMap a` is equal to the quadratic representation UaU_a.

theorem

`quadRepPositiveLinearMap a b = U_a(b)`

Let EE be a Jordan algebra. For any elements a,b∈Ea, b \in E, the application of the quadratic representation of aa bundled as a positive linear map (denoted `quadRepPositiveLinearMap a`) to the element bb is equal to the value of the quadratic representation operator UaU_a applied to bb. Here, UaU_a is the linear map defined by Ua(x)=2a∘(a∘x)−(a∘a)∘xU_a(x) = 2 a \circ (a \circ x) - (a \circ a) \circ x, where ∘\circ is the Jordan product.

theorem

U1=idEU_1 = \text{id}_E

Let EE be a Jordan algebra with unit element 11. The quadratic representation U1U_1, viewed as a positive linear map from EE to EE, is equal to the identity positive linear map idE\text{id}_E.

theorem

The quadratic representation UaU_a is monotone

Let EE be a Jordan algebra and let aa be an element in EE. The quadratic representation Ua:E→EU_a: E \to E, defined as Ua=2La2−La2U_a = 2 L_a^2 - L_{a^2} (where LaL_a is the left multiplication operator), is a monotone operator. Specifically, for any x,y∈Ex, y \in E such that x≤yx \le y with respect to the natural ordering of the Jordan algebra, it holds that Ua(x)≤Ua(y)U_a(x) \le U_a(y).
