Finite-rank Jordan trace and determinant data

This is the algebraic finite-dimensional companion to the order-unit state space. It records the generic trace and determinant of a formally real real Jordan algebra, and obtains density observables by cutting the canonical sum-of-squares cone at trace one. It does not assert that these are all order-unit states or normal JBW states: those are distinct analytic assertions.

definition

State space of a Jordan algebra {ρ∣IsSumSq ρ,tr(ρ)=1}\{ \rho \mid \text{IsSumSq } \rho, \text{tr}(\rho) = 1 \}

Given a real Jordan algebra EE equipped with trace-determinant data τ\tau, the set of states is defined as the collection of elements ρ∈E\rho \in E that are sums of squares (i.e., satisfy `IsSumSq ρ`) and have a trace equal to 1, such that tr(ρ)=1\text{tr}(\rho) = 1.

definition

Set of pure states {ρ∈τ.states∣ρ2=ρ}\{ \rho \in \tau.\text{states} \mid \rho^2 = \rho \}

Given a real Jordan algebra EE equipped with trace-determinant data τ\tau, the set of pure states is defined as the subset of density observables ρ∈τ.states\rho \in \tau.\text{states} that are idempotent, satisfying the condition ρ2=ρ\rho^2 = \rho.

definition

Expectation a↦tr(ρa)a \mapsto \text{tr}(\rho a) given a state ρ\rho

Given a real Jordan algebra EE with trace-determinant data τ\tau, and a state ρ\rho (an element of the state space τ.states\tau.\text{states}), the expectation is the linear map from EE to R\mathbb{R} defined by mapping an element a∈Ea \in E to the trace of the Jordan product of ρ\rho and aa, denoted as tr(ρ⋅a)\text{tr}(\rho \cdot a).

theorem

expectation(ρ)(a)=tr(ρ⋅a)\text{expectation}(\rho)(a) = \text{tr}(\rho \cdot a)

Let EE be a real Jordan algebra equipped with trace-determinant data τ\tau. For any state ρ∈τ.states\rho \in \tau.\text{states} and any element a∈Ea \in E, the expectation value of aa with respect to the state ρ\rho, denoted by τ.expectation(ρ)(a)\tau.\text{expectation}(\rho)(a), is equal to the trace of the Jordan product of ρ\rho and aa, denoted tr(ρ⋅a)\text{tr}(\rho \cdot a).

theorem

Square scalar multiplication preserves the sum-of-squares cone

Let EE be a formally real Jordan algebra. For any element x∈Ex \in E, if xx belongs to the sum-of-squares cone, then for any real number r∈Rr \in \mathbb{R}, the scalar multiple (r2)⋅x(r^2) \cdot x also belongs to the sum-of-squares cone.

theorem

Square-weighted mixtures of states are states

Let EE be a formally real Jordan algebra equipped with trace-determinant data τ\tau. Let τ.states={ρ∈E∣IsSumSq ρ,tr(ρ)=1}\tau.\text{states} = \{ \rho \in E \mid \text{IsSumSq } \rho, \text{tr}(\rho) = 1 \} denote the set of states (also called finite-rank density observables). For any states ρ,σ∈τ.states\rho, \sigma \in \tau.\text{states} and any real numbers r,s∈Rr, s \in \mathbb{R} such that r2+s2=1r^2 + s^2 = 1, the square-weighted mixture (r2)⋅ρ+(s2)⋅σ(r^2) \cdot \rho + (s^2) \cdot \sigma also belongs to τ.states\tau.\text{states}.

theorem

Expectations respect square-weighted mixtures of states

Let EE be a formally real Jordan algebra with trace-determinant data τ\tau. Let τ.states\tau.\text{states} denote the set of states ρ∈E\rho \in E such that ρ\rho is a sum of squares and tr(ρ)=1\text{tr}(\rho) = 1. For any states ρ,σ∈τ.states\rho, \sigma \in \tau.\text{states} and real numbers r,s∈Rr, s \in \mathbb{R} satisfying r2+s2=1r^2 + s^2 = 1, the expectation of an element a∈Ea \in E with respect to the square-weighted mixture (r2)ρ+(s2)σ(r^2) \rho + (s^2) \sigma is given by the weighted sum of the individual expectations: tr(((r2)ρ+(s2)σ)⋅a)=r2tr(ρ⋅a)+s2tr(σ⋅a) \text{tr}(((r^2) \rho + (s^2) \sigma) \cdot a) = r^2 \text{tr}(\rho \cdot a) + s^2 \text{tr}(\sigma \cdot a) where tr(ρ⋅a)\text{tr}(\rho \cdot a) denotes the expectation of aa given the state ρ\rho.
