definition

State defined by a density operator ρ\rho via x↦Tr(xρ)x \mapsto \text{Tr}(x \rho)

Let HH be a complex Hilbert space and L(H)\mathcal{L}(H) be the algebra of continuous linear operators on HH. Given a positive operator ρ∈L(H)\rho \in \mathcal{L}(H) such that Tr(ρ)=1\text{Tr}(\rho) = 1 (commonly known as a density operator), this definition constructs the corresponding state ω\omega on L(H)\mathcal{L}(H). This state ω\omega is a unital positive linear functional that maps an operator x∈L(H)x \in \mathcal{L}(H) to the complex number Tr(xρ)\text{Tr}(x \rho).

theorem

The state defined by a density operator ρ\rho evaluated at xx is Tr(xρ)\text{Tr}(x \rho)

Let HH be a complex Hilbert space and L(H)\mathcal{L}(H) be the algebra of continuous linear operators on HH. Let ρ∈L(H)\rho \in \mathcal{L}(H) be a positive operator with trace Tr(ρ)=1\text{Tr}(\rho) = 1. The unital positive linear map (state) ω\omega associated with the density operator ρ\rho satisfies ω(x)=Tr(xρ)\omega(x) = \text{Tr}(x \rho) for any operator x∈L(H)x \in \mathcal{L}(H).
