Projections in a C⋆-algebra

A projection is an idempotent effect: an effect `p : Effect (selfAdjoint A)` whose underlying element satisfies `p * p = p`. This bundles `IsIdempotentElem.isSharp` (`SharpEffect.lean`) as a genuine type, in the same style `PVM := {μ : POVM Ω E // μ.IsPVM}` bundles sharpness of every effect a POVM assigns (`Representation/PVM.lean`) — a `Projection` is exactly the operator-level data that makes a single POVM outcome a genuine projection.

Complementation and its involutivity are already available generically for *every* effect (`Effect.complement`, `Effect.complement_complement`, `OrderUnit/Effect/Basic.lean`); the only new ingredient needed to transport them to `Projection` is that the complement of an idempotent is again idempotent, which needs no C⋆-algebraic input at all and is already `IsIdempotentElem.one_sub` in Mathlib (`Algebra/Ring/Idempotent.lean`).

The one fact that is genuinely new to this codebase — nothing else here computes a spectrum — is that the real spectrum of a projection lies in `{0, 1}`. This is exactly Mathlib's `isIdempotentElem_iff_spectrum_subset`, specialized to the self-adjoint continuous functional calculus that `selfAdjoint A` already carries for a C⋆-algebra `A`.

definition

Projection in a C∗C^*-algebra AA

For a C∗C^*-algebra AA, a **projection** is an effect pp in the self-adjoint part of AA that is idempotent, satisfying the condition p2=pp^2 = p. An effect is defined as a self-adjoint element pp such that 0≤p≤10 \le p \le 1. Thus, a projection is a self-adjoint element p∈Ap \in A that satisfies p2=pp^2 = p (which implies 0≤p≤10 \le p \le 1 in a C∗C^*-algebra).

instance

Coercion from Projection A\text{Projection } A to Effect(selfAdjoint A)\text{Effect}(\text{selfAdjoint } A)

For a C∗C^*-algebra AA, this is the canonical coercion (inclusion) that maps a projection p∈Projection(A)p \in \text{Projection}(A) to its underlying element in the set of effects Effect(selfAdjoint A)\text{Effect}(\text{selfAdjoint } A), effectively forgetting the idempotence condition p2=pp^2 = p.

theorem

Equality of underlying effects implies equality of projections

Let AA be a C∗C^*-algebra. For any two projections p,q∈Projection(A)p, q \in \text{Projection}(A), if they are equal when viewed as effects (i.e., as elements of the self-adjoint part of AA satisfying 0≤p,q≤10 \le p, q \le 1), then p=qp = q as projections.

theorem

Every Projection is a Sharp Effect

Let AA be a C∗C^*-algebra. Every projection p∈Ap \in A is a sharp effect, meaning it cannot be expressed as a non-trivial mixture (convex combination) of two distinct effects. That is, if p=λq+(1−λ)rp = \lambda q + (1 - \lambda) r for some effects q,rq, r and 0<λ<10 < \lambda < 1, then q=r=pq = r = p.

definition

Complementary projection 1−p1 - p

For a projection pp in a C∗C^*-algebra AA, its complementary projection is defined as 1−p1 - p.

theorem

Double complement of a projection pp is pp

For any projection pp in a C∗C^*-algebra AA, taking the complement of its complement returns the original projection pp.

theorem

The spectrum of a projection pp satisfies σ(p)⊆{0,1}\sigma(p) \subseteq \{0, 1\}

Let AA be a C∗C^*-algebra and p∈Ap \in A be a projection (a self-adjoint element satisfying p2=pp^2 = p). The spectrum of pp over the real numbers, denoted σ(p)\sigma(p), is a subset of {0,1}\{0, 1\}. That is, σ(p)⊆{0,1}\sigma(p) \subseteq \{0, 1\}.
