The canonical JB-algebra of self-adjoint Cstar elements

i. Overview

This is the payoff of the whole `JordanOrderUnit`/`JB` layer: for any unital C⋆-algebra `A`, `selfAdjoint A` is a genuine JB-algebra, with the *physically normalized* Jordan product a∘b:=12(ab+ba), a \circ b := \tfrac12 (ab + ba), matching the textbook convention exactly. The multiplication and real Jordan-algebra instances are inherited directly from `StarAlgebra/Jordan.lean`; this file adds only the genuinely C⋆-specific order and norm compatibility. The normalization is exactly what makes `quadRep a b = a b a` below come out on the nose, and what makes the Jordan square `a ∘ a` equal the *ordinary* square `a * a`, matching `moment`/`variance`'s physical meaning).

The algebraic product is activated by `open scoped selfAdjoint`; the stronger order/JB instances remain scoped to `JB` so users can request the analytic structure separately.

theorem

1∘a=a1 \circ a = a for the Jordan product on selfAdjoint(A)\text{selfAdjoint}(A)

Let AA be a unital C∗C^*-algebra and selfAdjoint(A)\text{selfAdjoint}(A) be the set of its self-adjoint elements. For any a∈selfAdjoint(A)a \in \text{selfAdjoint}(A), the Jordan product of the identity element 11 and aa satisfies 1∘a=a1 \circ a = a. Here, the Jordan product is defined as x∘y=12(xy+yx)x \circ y = \frac{1}{2}(xy + yx).

theorem

The Jordan square of a self-adjoint element aa equals a2a^2

For any self-adjoint element aa in a unital C∗C^*-algebra AA, the Jordan square a∘aa \circ a (defined by the normalized Jordan product a∘b=12(ab+ba)a \circ b = \frac{1}{2}(ab + ba)) is equal to the ordinary associative square a2a^2 in AA.

theorem

The Jordan square of a self-adjoint element is non-negative (0≤a20 \le a^2)

Let AA be a unital C∗C^*-algebra. For any self-adjoint element a∈selfAdjoint(A)a \in \text{selfAdjoint}(A), its Jordan square a∗aa * a (defined as a∘a=12(aa+aa)=a2a \circ a = \frac{1}{2}(aa + aa) = a^2) is non-negative, satisfying 0≤a∗a0 \le a * a.

instance

The self-adjoint part of a unital C∗C^*-algebra is a Jordan order-unit space

Let AA be a unital C∗C^*-algebra. The space of self-adjoint elements selfAdjoint(A)={a∈A∣a∗=a}\text{selfAdjoint}(A) = \{a \in A \mid a^* = a\}, equipped with the normalized Jordan product a∘b=12(ab+ba)a \circ b = \frac{1}{2}(ab + ba), is a Jordan order-unit space. This means that selfAdjoint(A)\text{selfAdjoint}(A) carries a compatible structure of both a Jordan algebra and an order-unit space, where the identity element 1∈A1 \in A acts as the order unit and the square of any element a∘aa \circ a is non-negative (a∘a≥0a \circ a \ge 0).

theorem

Submultiplicativity of the Jordan product norm: ∥a∘b∥≤∥a∥∥b∥\|a \circ b\| \le \|a\| \|b\|

Let AA be a unital C∗C^*-algebra. For any self-adjoint elements a,b∈selfAdjoint(A)a, b \in \text{selfAdjoint}(A), the norm of their Jordan product a∘b=12(ab+ba)a \circ b = \frac{1}{2}(ab + ba) satisfies the inequality ∥a∘b∥≤∥a∥∥b∥.\|a \circ b\| \leq \|a\| \|b\|.

instance

selfAdjoint A\text{selfAdjoint } A is a normed Jordan algebra

Let AA be a unital C∗C^*-algebra. The space of self-adjoint elements, selfAdjoint A={a∈A∣a∗=a}\text{selfAdjoint } A = \{ a \in A \mid a^* = a \}, is a normed Jordan algebra over R\mathbb{R}. The algebraic structure is defined by the physically normalized Jordan product a∘b=12(ab+ba)a \circ b = \frac{1}{2}(ab + ba), and the norm is the standard operator norm inherited from AA, satisfying ∥a∘b∥≤∥a∥∥b∥\|a \circ b\| \leq \|a\| \|b\|.

instance

selfAdjoint A\text{selfAdjoint } A is a complete space

Let AA be a C∗C^*-algebra. The space of self-adjoint elements of AA, denoted as selfAdjoint A={a∈A∣a∗=a}\text{selfAdjoint } A = \{ a \in A \mid a^* = a \}, is a complete metric space. This completeness arises because the self-adjoint part is the closed fixed-point set of the continuous star operation (⋅)∗(\cdot)^* within the complete space AA.

theorem

∥a2∥=∥a∥2\|a^2\| = \|a\|^2 for self-adjoint elements

Let AA be a unital C∗C^*-algebra and let selfAdjoint A={a∈A∣a∗=a}\text{selfAdjoint } A = \{ a \in A \mid a^* = a \} be the set of its self-adjoint elements. For any a∈selfAdjoint Aa \in \text{selfAdjoint } A, the norm of its square is equal to the square of its norm, i.e., ∥a2∥=∥a∥2\|a^2\| = \|a\|^2 where ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\| denotes the operator norm inherited from AA. (Note: in the context of the Jordan algebra selfAdjoint A\text{selfAdjoint } A, the square a2a^2 refers to the Jordan product a∘aa \circ a, which coincides with the ordinary associative square).

theorem

∥a2∥≤∥a2+b2∥\|a^2\| \leq \|a^2 + b^2\| for self-adjoint elements in a C∗C^*-algebra

Let AA be a unital C∗C^*-algebra and let selfAdjoint A={a∈A∣a∗=a}\text{selfAdjoint } A = \{ a \in A \mid a^* = a \} be the set of its self-adjoint elements. For any a,b∈selfAdjoint Aa, b \in \text{selfAdjoint } A, the norm of the square of aa satisfies the inequality ∥a2∥≤∥a2+b2∥\|a^2\| \leq \|a^2 + b^2\| where ∥⋅∥\|\cdot\| denotes the operator norm inherited from AA.

instance

selfAdjoint A\text{selfAdjoint } A is a JB-algebra

Let AA be a unital C∗C^*-algebra. The space of self-adjoint elements, selfAdjoint A={a∈A∣a∗=a}\text{selfAdjoint } A = \{ a \in A \mid a^* = a \}, forms a JB-algebra. The algebraic structure is given by the physically normalized Jordan product a∘b=12(ab+ba)a \circ b = \frac{1}{2}(ab + ba), and the norm is the operator norm inherited from AA. Under this structure, selfAdjoint A\text{selfAdjoint } A is a complete normed Jordan algebra satisfying the JB-condition: ∥a2∥≤∥a2+b2∥\|a^2\| \leq \|a^2 + b^2\| for all a,b∈selfAdjoint Aa, b \in \text{selfAdjoint } A.

theorem

The Jordan quadratic representation Ua(b)U_a(b) equals the associative product abaaba

Let AA be a unital C∗C^*-algebra and let selfAdjoint A={a∈A∣a∗=a}\text{selfAdjoint } A = \{ a \in A \mid a^* = a \} be the Jordan algebra of its self-adjoint elements equipped with the product a∘b=12(ab+ba)a \circ b = \frac{1}{2}(ab + ba). For any a,b∈selfAdjoint Aa, b \in \text{selfAdjoint } A, the Jordan quadratic representation Ua(b)U_a(b), defined abstractly as Ua(b)=2a∘(a∘b)−(a∘a)∘bU_a(b) = 2 a \circ (a \circ b) - (a \circ a) \circ b, is equal to the associative triple product abaaba in AA.

theorem

A self-adjoint element pp is a Jordan projection iff p2=pp^2 = p

Let AA be a unital C∗C^*-algebra and p∈Ap \in A be a self-adjoint element. Then pp is a Jordan projection (meaning p∘p=pp \circ p = p with respect to the Jordan product a∘b=12(ab+ba)a \circ b = \frac{1}{2}(ab + ba)) if and only if pp is an idempotent element in the associative algebra AA (meaning p2=pp^2 = p).

theorem

Jordan Orthogonality   ⟺  pq+qp=0\iff pq + qp = 0

In a unital C∗C^*-algebra AA, two self-adjoint elements pp and qq are Jordan-orthogonal (meaning their Jordan product p∘qp \circ q is zero) if and only if their anticommutator vanishes, i.e., pq+qp=0pq + qp = 0. For the physically normalized product a∘b=12(ab+ba)a \circ b = \frac{1}{2}(ab + ba), this condition realizes the ordinary operator orthogonality pq=0pq = 0.
