Complex conjugation in the spacetime algebra

The spacetime algebra is a star ring under complex conjugation of the Taylor coefficients.

i. Overview

The star of a series in the spacetime algebra conjugates each of its complex coefficients and fixes each coordinate variable `x^μ`. The Taylor coefficients of the complex conjugate of a smooth field are the conjugates of its Taylor coefficients, so if `f` records a field at the base point then `star f` records the conjugate field.

Conjugation is an involution that respects sums and products. It conjugates complex scalars, fixes real scalars, and commutes with every iterated derivative `∂^s`.

ii. Key results

  • `SpaceTimeAlgebra.coeff_star` : the coefficients of `star f` are the conjugates of those of `f`.
  • `SpaceTimeAlgebra.star_C` : conjugating a constant series conjugates the constant.
  • `SpaceTimeAlgebra.star_X` : the coordinate variables are fixed by conjugation.
  • `SpaceTimeAlgebra.pderiv_star` : conjugation commutes with formal partial derivatives.
  • `SpaceTimeAlgebra.iteratedPDeriv_star` : conjugation commutes with iterated derivatives.

A. Coefficientwise conjugation

The star is the coefficient map `map (starRingEnd ℂ)`. Since `SpaceTimeAlgebra` is an abbreviation, these are instances on `MvPowerSeries (Fin 1 ⊕ Fin 3) ℂ`.

A.1. The star ring structure

Since the spacetime algebra is commutative, a ring homomorphism that is an involution makes it a star ring.

A.2. Constants and coordinates

A.3. Real and complex scalars

B. Formal partial derivatives

The coefficient of `x^n` in `pderiv μ f` is the coefficient of `x^(n + single μ 1)` in `f` times the natural number `n μ + 1`, which conjugation fixes.

Star operation on the spacetime algebra SpaceTimeAlgebra\text{SpaceTimeAlgebra}

The star operation (involution) on the spacetime algebra SpaceTimeAlgebra≅C[[xμ]]\text{SpaceTimeAlgebra} \cong \mathbb{C}[[x^\mu]] is defined by applying complex conjugation to each coefficient of the formal power series. For a power series f=∑anxnf = \sum a_n x^n, its conjugate star f\text{star } f (or f∗f^*) is given by ∑aˉnxn\sum \bar{a}_n x^n, where aˉn\bar{a}_n denotes the complex conjugate of the coefficient ana_n.

theorem

coeffn(f∗)=coeffn(f)‾\text{coeff}_n(f^*) = \overline{\text{coeff}_n(f)} in the Spacetime Algebra

In the spacetime algebra C[[xμ]]\mathbb{C}[[x^\mu]], for any formal power series ff and any multi-index n∈N4n \in \mathbb{N}^4 (representing the exponents of the variables xμx^\mu), the coefficient of the monomial xnx^n in the conjugate series f∗f^* is equal to the complex conjugate of the coefficient of xnx^n in ff. That is, coeffn(f∗)=coeffn(f)‾\text{coeff}_n(f^*) = \overline{\text{coeff}_n(f)}.

theorem

constantCoeff(star f)=star(constantCoeff f)\text{constantCoeff}(\text{star } f) = \text{star}(\text{constantCoeff } f)

For any formal power series ff in the spacetime algebra SpaceTimeAlgebra≅C[[xμ]]\text{SpaceTimeAlgebra} \cong \mathbb{C}[[x^\mu]], the constant coefficient of the conjugate series star f\text{star } f is equal to the complex conjugate (star) of the constant coefficient of ff. That is, constantCoeff(star f)=star(constantCoeff f)\text{constantCoeff}(\text{star } f) = \text{star}(\text{constantCoeff } f).

SpaceTimeAlgebra\text{SpaceTimeAlgebra} is a star ring under coefficientwise conjugation

The spacetime algebra SpaceTimeAlgebra≅C[[xμ]]\text{SpaceTimeAlgebra} \cong \mathbb{C}[[x^\mu]] is a star ring where the star operation f↦f∗f \mapsto f^* is defined by applying complex conjugation to each coefficient of the formal power series. This structure satisfies the following properties for all f,g∈SpaceTimeAlgebraf, g \in \text{SpaceTimeAlgebra}: 1. Additivity: (f+g)∗=f∗+g∗(f + g)^* = f^* + g^* 2. Conjugate-multiplicativity: (fg)∗=g∗f∗(fg)^* = g^* f^* 3. Involution: (f∗)∗=f(f^*)^* = f

theorem

Conjugation of a Constant Series in the Spacetime Algebra (star(C(a))=C(aˉ)\text{star}(C(a)) = C(\bar{a}))

In the spacetime algebra, let C:C→SpaceTimeAlgebraC: \mathbb{C} \to \text{SpaceTimeAlgebra} be the map that identifies a complex number aa with a constant formal power series. For any complex number a∈Ca \in \mathbb{C}, the star operation (complex conjugation of coefficients) applied to the constant series C(a)C(a) is equal to the constant series formed by the complex conjugate of aa. That is, star(C(a))=C(star(a))\text{star}(C(a)) = C(\text{star}(a)), where star(a)\text{star}(a) denotes the complex conjugate aˉ\bar{a}.

theorem

(xμ)∗=xμ(x^\mu)^* = x^\mu in the spacetime algebra

In the spacetime algebra, for any coordinate index μ∈Fin 1⊕Fin 3\mu \in \text{Fin } 1 \oplus \text{Fin } 3, the star operation (complex conjugation) fixes the coordinate variable xμx^\mu. That is, (xμ)∗=xμ(x^\mu)^* = x^\mu.

The star operation on SpaceTimeAlgebra\text{SpaceTimeAlgebra} commutes with real scalars

The spacetime algebra C[[xμ]]\mathbb{C}[[x^\mu]] (the ring of formal power series in four variables with complex coefficients) is a star module over the real numbers R\mathbb{R}. This means that the star operation (defined as coefficient-wise complex conjugation) commutes with multiplication by real scalars: for any r∈Rr \in \mathbb{R} and any f∈C[[xμ]]f \in \mathbb{C}[[x^\mu]], the conjugate of the scaled series is equal to the scalar times the conjugate of the series, i.e., (r⋅f)∗=r⋅f∗(r \cdot f)^* = r \cdot f^*.

star(c⋅f)=cˉ⋅star(f)\text{star}(c \cdot f) = \bar{c} \cdot \text{star}(f) for complex cc in the spacetime algebra

For any complex scalar c∈Cc \in \mathbb{C} and any element ff of the spacetime algebra (represented as a formal power series f∈C[[xμ]]f \in \mathbb{C}[[x^\mu]]), the star operation (complex conjugation) satisfies the identity (c⋅f)∗=cˉ⋅f∗(c \cdot f)^* = \bar{c} \cdot f^*, where cˉ\bar{c} denotes the complex conjugate of cc and f∗f^* is the series obtained by conjugating each coefficient of ff.

theorem

Complex Conjugation Commutes with Partial Derivatives: ∂μ(f∗)=(∂μf)∗\partial_\mu (f^*) = (\partial_\mu f)^*

In the spacetime algebra C[[xμ]]\mathbb{C}[[x^\mu]], let f∗f^* denote the complex conjugate of a formal power series ff (obtained by conjugating each of its coefficients). For any coordinate index μ∈Fin 1⊕Fin 3\mu \in \text{Fin } 1 \oplus \text{Fin } 3, the formal partial derivative with respect to xμx^\mu commutes with the star operation: ∂f∗∂xμ=(∂f∂xμ)∗\frac{\partial f^*}{\partial x^\mu} = \left( \frac{\partial f}{\partial x^\mu} \right)^*

theorem

Complex Conjugation Commutes with Iterated Partial Derivatives: ∂s(f∗)=(∂sf)∗\partial^s (f^*) = (\partial^s f)^*

In the spacetime algebra SpaceTimeAlgebra≅C[[xμ]]\text{SpaceTimeAlgebra} \cong \mathbb{C}[[x^\mu]], let f∗f^* denote the complex conjugate of a formal power series ff (the series obtained by conjugating each of its coefficients). For any multiset ss of coordinate indices μ∈Fin 1⊕Fin 3\mu \in \text{Fin } 1 \oplus \text{Fin } 3, the iterated formal partial derivative ∂s\partial^s commutes with the star operation: ∂s(f∗)=(∂sf)∗\partial^s (f^*) = (\partial^s f)^*
