theorem

Evaluation of F∈V⊗VF \in V \otimes V at μ,ν\mu, \nu equals its basis coefficient FμνF^{\mu\nu}

Let dd be the number of spatial dimensions and VdV_d be the space of real Lorentz vectors. For any rank-2 tensor F∈Vd⊗RVdF \in V_d \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} V_d and spacetime indices μ,ν∈Fin 1⊕Fin d\mu, \nu \in \text{Fin } 1 \oplus \text{Fin } d, let {F∣[μ][ν]}T\{F| [\mu] [\nu]\}^T denote the evaluation of the tensor FF at the indices μ\mu and ν\nu. The scalar value obtained by this evaluation (mapped to the field R\mathbb{R} via toField\text{toField}) is equal to the (μ,ν)(\mu, \nu)-th coefficient of FF with respect to the tensor product of the standard basis for VdV_d.

theorem

Tensor Basis Coefficients of F∈Vd⊗VdF \in V_d \otimes V_d Equal Tensor Product Basis Coefficients

For a given spatial dimension dd, let VdV_d be the space of Lorentz vectors. For any element F∈Vd⊗RVdF \in V_d \otimes_{\mathbb{R}} V_d in the tensor product space and any multi-index b=(b0,b1)b = (b_0, b_1) representing two contravariant indices, the component of the tensor representation toTensor(F)\text{toTensor}(F) at index bb in the canonical tensor basis is equal to the component of FF at indices (b0,b1)(b_0, b_1) with respect to the tensor product of the standard bases of VdV_d.
