Component indices for two-index tensors

Component indices of two-index tensors as pairs of basis indices.

i. Overview

This file defines the equivalence between component indices for two colors and pairs of basis indices of those colors.

ii. Key results

- `TensorSpecies.Tensor.ComponentIdx.pair` is the equivalence between `ComponentIdx cs` and `basisIdx (cs 0) × basisIdx (cs 1)`.

definition

ComponentIdx≃basisIdx0×basisIdx1\text{ComponentIdx} \simeq \text{basisIdx}_0 \times \text{basisIdx}_1 for two-index tensors

Given a sequence of two index types (or "colors") c:{0,1}→Cc : \{0, 1\} \to C, there is an equivalence between the type of component indices for a tensor with these colors, ComponentIdx(c)\text{ComponentIdx}(c), and the Cartesian product of the individual basis index sets basisIdx(c0)×basisIdx(c1)\text{basisIdx}(c_0) \times \text{basisIdx}(c_1). This equivalence maps a functional index bb to the pair (b0,b1)(b_0, b_1).

theorem

ComponentIdx.pair(b)=(b0,b1)\text{ComponentIdx.pair}(b) = (b_0, b_1)

For a tensor with two index types c0c_0 and c1c_1 (given by a mapping cs:{0,1}→Ccs : \{0, 1\} \to C), let bb be a component index. The equivalence ComponentIdx.pair\text{ComponentIdx.pair} maps the functional index bb to the ordered pair of its components (b0,b1)(b_0, b_1).

theorem

The 0-th component of pair−1(x)\text{pair}^{-1}(x) is the first element of xx for two-index tensors

Given a sequence of two index types (or "colors") c:{0,1}→Cc: \{0, 1\} \to C, let I0=basisIdx(c0)I_0 = \text{basisIdx}(c_0) and I1=basisIdx(c1)I_1 = \text{basisIdx}(c_1) be the sets of basis indices for each color. Let pair:ComponentIdx(c)≅I0×I1\text{pair} : \text{ComponentIdx}(c) \cong I_0 \times I_1 be the equivalence mapping a multi-index bb to the pair (b(0),b(1))(b(0), b(1)). For any pair of indices x=(x1,x2)∈I0×I1x = (x_1, x_2) \in I_0 \times I_1, the multi-index bb obtained from the inverse mapping pair−1(x)\text{pair}^{-1}(x) satisfies b(0)=x1b(0) = x_1.

theorem

The second component of the inverse pairing for two-index tensors is the second element of the pair

Let cs:{0,1}→Ccs: \{0, 1\} \to C be a sequence of two index types (colors). Let pair\text{pair} be the equivalence between the type of component indices for a tensor with these colors, ComponentIdx(cs)\text{ComponentIdx}(cs), and the Cartesian product of the individual basis index sets basisIdx(cs0)×basisIdx(cs1)\text{basisIdx}(cs_0) \times \text{basisIdx}(cs_1). For any pair of basis indices x=(x0,x1)x = (x_0, x_1) in this product, applying the inverse equivalence pair−1\text{pair}^{-1} to xx and evaluating the resulting component index function at index 11 yields the second component of the pair, x1x_1.
