The Dirac slash operator

This file defines the Dirac slash `k̸ = k_μ γ^μ` of a Lorentz vector, in the Dirac representation obtained from the gamma endomorphisms `Fermion.Dirac.gamma` via the change of coordinates `Fermion.Dirac.endEquivMatrix`. The slash is the Dirac representation of Clifford multiplication `Fermion.Dirac.gammaMatrix`, and so contracts the lowered coordinates of a Lorentz vector with the gamma matrices.

Main Definitions

  • `Slash.slash`: The Dirac slash `k̸ = k_μ γ^μ` of a Lorentz vector
  • `Slash.slashProd`: The product of the Dirac slashes of a list of Lorentz vectors

definition

Dirac slash k ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/=kμγμk\!\!\!/ = k_\mu \gamma^\mu

For a Lorentz vector kk, the Dirac slash k ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/k\!\!\!/ is the 4×44 \times 4 complex matrix defined by the contraction k ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/=∑μ=03kμγμk\!\!\!/ = \sum_{\mu=0}^3 k_\mu \gamma^\mu, where kμk_\mu are the covariant (lowered) components of kk and γμ\gamma^\mu are the Dirac gamma matrices. This matrix is the representation of the Clifford multiplication operator γ(k)\gamma(k) in the Dirac basis.

definition

Dirac slash notation k/=kμγμk\mkern-8.5mu/ = k_\mu \gamma^\mu

For a Lorentz vector kk, the notation k/k\mkern-8.5mu/ represents the Dirac slash operator, defined as the contraction kμγμk_\mu \gamma^\mu of the vector's components with the Dirac gamma matrices γμ\gamma^\mu. This operator is represented as a 4×44 \times 4 complex matrix.

definition

R\mathbb{R}-linear map of the Dirac slash $\slashed{k}$

The Dirac slash $\slashed{k}$ is an R\mathbb{R}-linear map from the space of Lorentz vectors to the space of 4×44 \times 4 complex matrices Mat4×4(C)\text{Mat}_{4 \times 4}(\mathbb{C}). It is defined by the contraction $\slashed{k} = \sum_{\mu=0}^3 k_\mu \gamma^\mu$, where kμk_\mu are the covariant (lowered) components of the Lorentz vector kk and γμ\gamma^\mu are the Dirac gamma matrices. This map is the matrix representation of Clifford multiplication by a Lorentz vector.

theorem

$\text{slashLinear}(k) = \slashed{k}$

For any Lorentz vector kk, the value of the R\mathbb{R}-linear map slashLinear\text{slashLinear} applied to kk is equal to the Dirac slash matrix $\slashed{k}$, which is defined by the contraction $\slashed{k} = \sum_{\mu=0}^3 k_\mu \gamma^\mu$ of the covariant components of kk with the Dirac gamma matrices γμ\gamma^\mu.

theorem

$\slashed{k} = \sum_{\mu} k_\mu \gamma^\mu$

For a Lorentz vector kk, the Dirac slash $\slashed{k}$ is equal to the sum over spacetime indices μ\mu of the covariant components kμk_\mu multiplied by the matrix representation of the Dirac gamma matrices γμ\gamma^\mu: \[\slashed{k} = \sum_{\mu} k_\mu \gamma^\mu\] where kμ=ημμkμk_\mu = \eta_{\mu\mu} k^\mu are the lowered coordinates of kk obtained via the Minkowski metric η=diag(1,−1,−1,−1)\eta = \text{diag}(1, -1, -1, -1), and γμ\gamma^\mu are the Dirac gamma matrices.

theorem

0 ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/=00\!\!\!/ = 0

The Dirac slash of the zero Lorentz vector is the zero matrix. That is, 0 ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/=00\!\!\!/ = 0, where the 00 on the left is the zero Lorentz vector and the 00 on the right is the zero 4×44 \times 4 complex matrix.

theorem

̸(k+l)=k̸+l̸\not{(k + l)} = \not{k} + \not{l}

For any two Lorentz vectors kk and ll, the Dirac slash of their sum is equal to the sum of their individual Dirac slashes: ̸(k+l)=k̸+l̸\not{(k + l)} = \not{k} + \not{l} where k̸=∑μkμγμ\not{k} = \sum_{\mu} k_\mu \gamma^\mu is the 4×44 \times 4 complex matrix formed by contracting the covariant components of the Lorentz vector kk with the Dirac gamma matrices γμ\gamma^\mu.

theorem

̸(ck)=ck̸\not{(ck)} = c \not{k}

For any real number c∈Rc \in \mathbb{R} and any Lorentz vector kk, the Dirac slash of the scalar product c⋅kc \cdot k is equal to the scalar multiplication of the matrix k̸\not{k} by cc. That is: ̸(ck)=ck̸\not{(ck)} = c \not{k} where k̸=∑μ=03kμγμ\not{k} = \sum_{\mu=0}^3 k_\mu \gamma^\mu is the 4×44 \times 4 complex matrix formed by the contraction of the covariant components of kk with the Dirac gamma matrices γμ\gamma^\mu.

definition

Left multiplication by Dirac slash k ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/k\!\!\!/

For a Lorentz vector kk, this is the C\mathbb{C}-linear endomorphism of the space of 4×44 \times 4 complex matrices M4(C)M_4(\mathbb{C}) that maps a matrix AA to the product k ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/Ak\!\!\!/ A, where k ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/=∑μ=03kμγμk\!\!\!/ = \sum_{\mu=0}^3 k_\mu \gamma^\mu is the Dirac slash matrix.

definition

Product of Dirac slashes ∏̸ki\prod \not{k}_i

Given a list of Lorentz vectors [k1,k2,…,kn][k_1, k_2, \dots, k_n], this function computes the product of their corresponding Dirac slash matrices in the order they appear. The result is the 4×44 \times 4 complex matrix: ̸k1̸k2…̸kn\not{k}_1 \not{k}_2 \dots \not{k}_n where each ̸ki=∑μ=03ki,μγμ\not{k}_i = \sum_{\mu=0}^3 k_{i,\mu} \gamma^\mu is the Dirac slash of the vector kik_i and γμ\gamma^\mu are the Dirac gamma matrices. If the list is empty, the result is the identity matrix I4I_4.

theorem

The Dirac slash product of an empty list is I4I_4

The product of the Dirac slashes of an empty list of Lorentz vectors is the 4×44 \times 4 identity matrix I4I_4.

theorem

slashProd(k::ks)=k ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/⋅slashProd(ks)\text{slashProd}(k :: ks) = k\!\!\!/ \cdot \text{slashProd}(ks)

For any Lorentz vector kk and any list of Lorentz vectors ks=[k1,k2,…,kn]ks = [k_1, k_2, \dots, k_n], the product of the Dirac slashes of the list formed by prepending kk to ksks (denoted k::ksk :: ks) is equal to the matrix product of the Dirac slash k ⁣ ⁣ ⁣/=∑μ=03kμγμk\!\!\!/ = \sum_{\mu=0}^3 k_\mu \gamma^\mu and the product of the Dirac slashes of the list ksks.
