Number operators

i. Overview

The number operators `Nᵢ = aᵢ† aᵢ` of the `d`-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator, built from the ladder operators of `LadderOperators.lean` and acting on Schwartz maps: their commutation relations with the ladder operators and with each other, and the Hamiltonian of `Basic.lean`, which on Schwartz maps acts as `H_N = ∑ᵢ ℏ ωᵢ (Nᵢ + ½)`, commutes with the number operators and lowers and raises energies by `ℏ ωᵢ`. The number operators are then lifted to unbounded operators on the Hilbert space with the Schwartz submodule as domain (like `momentumOperator`), where they are symmetric, as is the Hamiltonian.

theorem

⟨N^if,g⟩=⟨f,N^ig⟩\langle \hat{N}_i f, g \rangle = \langle f, \hat{N}_i g \rangle for the Number Operator on Schwartz Space

For a dd-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator QQ and an index i∈{0,…,d−1}i \in \{0, \dots, d-1\}, let N^i\hat{N}_i be the number operator of the ii-th mode acting on the Schwartz space S(Space d,C)\mathcal{S}(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}). For any two Schwartz functions f,g∈S(Space d,C)f, g \in \mathcal{S}(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}), the L2L^2 inner product satisfies: ⟨N^if,g⟩=⟨f,N^ig⟩\langle \hat{N}_i f, g \rangle = \langle f, \hat{N}_i g \rangle where the functions are viewed as elements of the Hilbert space L2(Space d,C)L^2(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}).

theorem

[H,ai]=−ℏωiai[H, a_i] = -\hbar \omega_i a_i for the Quantum Harmonic Oscillator Hamiltonian

For a dd-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator QQ, let ℏ\hbar be the reduced Planck constant and ωj\omega_j be the angular frequency of the jj-th mode. Let NjN_j be the jj-th number operator and aia_i be the ii-th annihilation (lowering) operator, both acting as continuous linear maps on the Schwartz space S(Rd,C)\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d, \mathbb{C}). The commutator of the Hamiltonian H=∑jℏωj(Nj+12)H = \sum_j \hbar \omega_j (N_j + \frac{1}{2}) with the ii-th annihilation operator is given by: [∑jℏωj(Nj+12),ai]=−ℏωiai \left[ \sum_j \hbar \omega_j \left( N_j + \frac{1}{2} \right), a_i \right] = -\hbar \omega_i a_i

theorem

[H^,a^i†]=ℏωia^i†[\hat{H}, \hat{a}_i^\dagger] = \hbar \omega_i \hat{a}_i^\dagger

In a dd-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator, let N^j\hat{N}_j be the number operator for the jj-th mode, a^i†\hat{a}_i^\dagger be the ii-th raising operator, ℏ\hbar be the reduced Planck constant, and ωj\omega_j be the frequency of the jj-th mode. On the Schwartz space S(Rd,C)\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d, \mathbb{C}), the Hamiltonian operator is given by H^=∑jℏωj(N^j+121^),\hat{H} = \sum_{j} \hbar \omega_j \left( \hat{N}_j + \frac{1}{2} \hat{\mathbb{1}} \right), where 1^\hat{\mathbb{1}} is the identity operator. The commutator of the Hamiltonian and the ii-th raising operator satisfies: [H^,a^i†]=ℏωia^i†.\left[ \hat{H}, \hat{a}_i^\dagger \right] = \hbar \omega_i \hat{a}_i^\dagger.

theorem

The Hamiltonian of the harmonic oscillator commutes with the number operators: [∑jℏωj(N^j+12),N^i]=0[\sum_j \hbar \omega_j (\hat{N}_j + \frac{1}{2}), \hat{N}_i] = 0

For a dd-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator QQ with angular frequencies ωj\omega_j, let N^j\hat{N}_j be the number operator for the jj-th mode acting on the Schwartz space S(Rd,C)\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d, \mathbb{C}). The Hamiltonian operator, defined as the sum ∑jℏωj(N^j+12I^)\sum_j \hbar \omega_j (\hat{N}_j + \frac{1}{2} \hat{I}), commutes with each individual number operator N^i\hat{N}_i. That is, [∑jℏωj(N^j+12I^),N^i]=0 \left[ \sum_{j} \hbar \omega_j \left( \hat{N}_j + \frac{1}{2} \hat{I} \right), \hat{N}_i \right] = 0 where ℏ\hbar is the reduced Planck constant and I^\hat{I} is the identity operator.

theorem

∑jℏωj(N^j+12)=12m∑ip^i2+V\sum_j \hbar \omega_j (\hat{N}_j + \frac{1}{2}) = \frac{1}{2m} \sum_i \hat{p}_i^2 + V on Schwartz functions

For a dd-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator QQ with mass mm and natural frequencies ωj\omega_j (j=1,…,dj=1, \dots, d), let ψ∈S(Rd,C)\psi \in \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^d, \mathbb{C}) be a function in the Schwartz space and x∈Rdx \in \mathbb{R}^d be a position vector. The action of the Hamiltonian operator, expressed in terms of the number operators N^j\hat{N}_j, on the function ψ\psi at point xx satisfies: (∑jℏωj(N^j+12I^)ψ)(x)=12m∑i(p^i(p^iψ))(x)+V(x)ψ(x) \left( \sum_{j} \hbar \omega_j \left( \hat{N}_j + \frac{1}{2} \hat{\mathbb{I}} \right) \psi \right)(x) = \frac{1}{2m} \sum_{i} (\hat{p}_i (\hat{p}_i \psi))(x) + V(x) \psi(x) where ℏ\hbar is the reduced Planck constant, I^\hat{\mathbb{I}} is the identity operator, p^i\hat{p}_i is the ii-th component of the momentum operator, and V(x)=12m∑iωi2xi2V(x) = \frac{1}{2} m \sum_i \omega_i^2 x_i^2 is the potential function of the oscillator.

theorem

S(Space d,C)⊆dom(H^)\mathcal{S}(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}) \subseteq \text{dom}(\hat{H})

For a dd-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator QQ, the Schwartz submodule S(Space d,C)\mathcal{S}(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}), which consists of the space of rapidly decreasing smooth functions, is contained within the domain of the Hamiltonian operator H^\hat{H}: S(Space d,C)⊆dom(H^) \mathcal{S}(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}) \subseteq \text{dom}(\hat{H}) where dom(H^)\text{dom}(\hat{H}) denotes the set of states in the Hilbert space L2(Space d,C)L^2(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}) upon which the Hamiltonian operator is well-defined.

theorem

H^=∑jℏωj(N^j+12)\hat{H} = \sum_j \hbar \omega_j (\hat{N}_j + \frac{1}{2}) on Schwartz Maps

Let QQ be a dd-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator with angular frequencies ωj\omega_j for j∈{1,…,d}j \in \{1, \dots, d\}. For any Schwartz function f∈S(Space d,C)f \in \mathcal{S}(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}), let [f][f] denote its corresponding element in the Hilbert space L2(Space d,C)L^2(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}). If [f][f] belongs to the domain of the Hamiltonian operator H^\hat{H}, then the action of H^\hat{H} on [f][f] is given by H^[f]=[∑j=1dℏωj(N^j+12I^)f] \hat{H} [f] = \left[ \sum_{j=1}^d \hbar \omega_j \left( \hat{N}_j + \frac{1}{2} \hat{\mathbb{I}} \right) f \right] where ℏ\hbar is the reduced Planck constant, N^j\hat{N}_j is the jj-th mode number operator acting on the Schwartz space, and I^\hat{\mathbb{I}} is the identity operator.

theorem

⟨H^f,g⟩=⟨f,H^g⟩\langle \hat{H} f, g \rangle = \langle f, \hat{H} g \rangle for Schwartz functions f,gf, g

Let QQ be a dd-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator with Hamiltonian operator H^\hat{H} and Hilbert space H=L2(Space d,C)\mathcal{H} = L^2(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}). For any two Schwartz functions f,g∈S(Space d,C)f, g \in \mathcal{S}(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}) whose corresponding elements in H\mathcal{H} are in the domain of H^\hat{H}, the inner product satisfies: ⟨H^f,g⟩=⟨f,H^g⟩\langle \hat{H} f, g \rangle = \langle f, \hat{H} g \rangle This property shows that the Hamiltonian operator is symmetric when restricted to the Schwartz submodule.

definition

Number operator N^i\hat{N}_i as an unbounded operator

For a dd-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator QQ and an index i∈{0,…,d−1}i \in \{0, \dots, d-1\}, the number operator N^i\hat{N}_i is defined as an unbounded linear operator on the Hilbert space H=L2(Space d,C)\mathcal{H} = L^2(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}). Its domain is the Schwartz submodule S(Space d,C)⊂H\mathcal{S}(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}) \subset \mathcal{H}. For any state ψ\psi in this domain, the operator acts by applying the ii-th mode's ladder operators, N^iψ=a^i†a^iψ\hat{N}_i \psi = \hat{a}_i^\dagger \hat{a}_i \psi.

theorem

Action of the number operator N^i\hat{N}_i on the Schwartz submodule

For a dd-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator QQ and a mode index i∈{0,…,d−1}i \in \{0, \dots, d-1\}, let N^i\hat{N}_i be the number operator defined as an unbounded linear operator on the Hilbert space L2(Space d,C)L^2(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}). For any state ψ\psi in the Schwartz submodule (the subspace of the Hilbert space consisting of Schwartz functions), the action of the operator is given by: N^iψ=ι(N^i,CLM(ι−1(ψ)))\hat{N}_i \psi = \iota(\hat{N}_{i, \text{CLM}} (\iota^{-1}(\psi))) where ι:S(Space d,C)→SchwartzSubmodule d\iota: \mathcal{S}(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}) \to \text{SchwartzSubmodule } d is the linear isomorphism between the Schwartz space and the Schwartz submodule of the Hilbert space, and N^i,CLM\hat{N}_{i, \text{CLM}} is the number operator acting as a continuous linear map on the Schwartz space S(Space d,C)\mathcal{S}(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}).

theorem

The number operator N^i\hat{N}_i is symmetric

For a dd-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator QQ and an index i∈{0,…,d−1}i \in \{0, \dots, d-1\}, the number operator N^i\hat{N}_i, acting as an unbounded operator on the Hilbert space L2(Space d,C)L^2(\text{Space } d, \mathbb{C}) with the Schwartz submodule as its domain, is symmetric. This means that for any two states ψ\psi and ϕ\phi in the Schwartz submodule, the inner product satisfies: ⟨N^iψ,ϕ⟩=⟨ψ,N^iϕ⟩\langle \hat{N}_i \psi, \phi \rangle = \langle \psi, \hat{N}_i \phi \rangle
